] 3ST Keep it before the people. That B. F.
ILillet, the chairman of the National Democra
tic Committee, an out-and-out Abolitionist, who
was also the author of the following resolution:
‘Resolved That we are opposed to slave
ry IN EVERY FORM AND COLOR AND IN FAVOR
OF FREEDOM AND FREESOIL WHEREVER MAN
LIVES THROUGHOUT GOD’S HERITAGE.’
Keep it before the people. That the
New Hampshire Patriot Gen. Pierce’s organ
and the accredited organ of the New Hamp
shire Democracy fur many years, on the 25th
of October, 1849, thus spoke of the Wilmot
Proviso and Slavery :
Tt is not true that we ever accused the
V “'g 3 °f a desire to extend the Wilmot Pro
viso over the land, as he asserts ; but it is true,
‘ ,s ‘ ie asserts, that the Democrats desire ‘that
the thing shoidd be done,’ and That they are
now ready to do it. 1 They are so ; the Demo
cracy of New Hampshire were never more
ready to extend this principle over the land than
j they are now, but they do not exhibit this as
the Federalists did, by supporting a great slave
holder, slave-trader and slave-breeder for the
Presidency.
Keep it before the people. That the
Cleveland, Ohio, Plain dealer, a supporter of
Gen. Pierce admits that ‘Frank Pierce loathes
the fugitive Law, and has a most revolting
feeling to giving up a fugitive slave.’
J&f Keep it before the people. That the
\A ashington L nion, the national organ of the
democratic party, says that ‘the Free Soil de
mocratic leaders of the North,’ such as the But
lers. the Van Burens, the Hallets, the Cleve
lands, the Preston Rings and others, L are a
regular portion of the great Democratic party,
an l that Gen. Pierce, if elected , will make no
distinction between them and the rest of the De
mocracy in t] ie distribution of official paironaye
and m the selection of agents for administering
the Government.’
&*T Keep it before the people. That Gen-
Pierce, in speaking of Slavery, said it icas the
greatest trouble of the country, and was so re-I
yarded by Washington. As for himself TIE
NEVER SAW A HUMAN BEING IN BON
DAGE, WITHOUT FEELING HIS HEART
REVOLT AT IT. SLAVERY IS CONTRA-
R\ TO THE CONSTITUTION in some re
spects—a moral blot upon the character of the
nation.
SdAP Keep it before the people. That Gen.
Pierce also said, ‘7 have been asked if I liked
this Fugitive Slave Law. I answered No l
LOATHED IT. I HAVE A MOST REVOLT
ING FEELING AT THE GIVING UP OF A
SLAVE—THE LAW IS OPPOSED TO HU
MANITY.’
Jt.+F Lerp it before the people. That when
the Freesoil resolutions were before the New
Hampshire Legislature, Mr. Norris, then Spea
ker ot the House, now Senator, and certifier for
Gen. Pierce, left the Chair, and made a furious
speech in support of the resolutions.
Mr. Norris said—
‘l should be willing to go further than the
resolutions themselves. I should be willing to
say this, and have said it, and to Southern men,
although a ‘doughface,’ that no more territory
should be admitted, into the Union where Sla
very exists, and that I would vote for an organic
law prohibiting it.
Sir. lam in favor of these resolutions. I
think they speak the sentiments of truth, jus
tice, and freedom ; and / should like to know
if there is a man in this House —l hope the
yeas and nays will be called—l should like to
see the first man in this House who will dare
face the freemen of New Hampshire and vote
against them. I should like to see the first who
will go home to his constituents and say, I vo
ted against these resolutions because they are
all wrong. THEY AVOW THE PRINCI
PLES UPON WHICH OUR GOVERNMENT
MI ST REST. THEY AVOW PRINCIPLES
FOR HUMANITY AND FOR GOD HIM
SELF AND HIS LAWS. And I hope they
will be adopted as they are.’
Fd?” K ey) it before the people. That Mc-
M.(kin’s hum lei American Courier of Sept. 1847
said thus of Gen. Pierce’s volunteering to go to
Mexica:
‘Keenly looking to the future, and fearing a
peace, which would disband the volunteers, lie
refnsed to accept the Generalship, unless he re
ceived with his commission six months full jxiy
and rations for man and horse in advance,
which, extraordinary as it may appear, and un
precedented in the army, was granted and paid
to him before he mounted his charger, or re
ceived the sword purchased for him by the la
dies of Concord, N. 11., where he was a practi
sing Attorney.’
£7T K eep it before the people. That John
Van Buren one of Gt*u. Pierce’s bosom friends
thus spoke at Syracuse V. Y.:
‘I HAVE HAD OCCASION TO SAY,
HERETOFORE, THAT I WOULD NOT
SUPPORT ANY MAN FOR THE PRESI
DENCY, WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE SLA
VERY TO BE AN UNMITIGATED EVIL,
AND WIIO WILL NOT USE ALL THE
POWER WHICH TIIE CONSTITUTION
AND LAWS MAY PLACE IN IIIS HANDS
FOR ITS OVERTHROW. I would give no
tice now, that the general judgment of the
people of this State is, that they cannot and
will not swerve from this position ; and, as for
me, l shall live and die by it.’
Keep it before the people. That the
‘surprising tact is spread before the country by
Mr. Robinson, that while Catholics, Jews and
all others not Protestants, cannot hold the offi
ces of Governor, Councilmen, Senators and Re- ■
preservatives, NEGROES CAN YOIE AND
HOLD OFFICE, A negro of the darkest hue,
of the purest ebony, may be elected to the of
fice of Governor, but if a white man be a Catho
lic, he cannot even be elected to the Legislature.’
/gs Keep it before the people. That in
1838 the Locofocos of Concord, New Hamp
shire, apprehending some danger at the ensuing
Municipal election, thought to gain some votes
by granting the elective franchise to foreign j
born inhabitants, whether naturalised or not. |
Os the 23 who voted, 17 voted the Whig ticket.
This inflamed the Democracy to such a pitch,
that they passed an act, which declared : ‘That
no alien shall be entitled to vote at any town j
meeting. ISAAC HILL,
Approved July 4tli, 2838. Governor.’
JteT Keep it before the people. That YVil

voted for the General Bankrupt Law, and the
United States Bank charter //
