A Fragment.
Swiftly glide our years; they follow each
other like w aves of the ocean. Memory calls
up the person we once knew—the scenes in
which we were once actors; they appear betore
the mind like the phantoms of a night vision.
Behold the body rejoicing l , in the glory of the
soul; the wheels of time cannot roll too rapidly
for him; the light of hope dances in his eye;
the smile of expectation plays upon his lips ; he
looks for Tong years of joy to come, his spirit
burns within him when he hears of great men,
and mighty deeds; he wants to be a man; he
longs to mount the hill of ambition, to tread
the path of honor, to hear the shouts of ap
plause. Look at him again, he is now in the
meridian of life, care has stamped the wrinkles
on his brow, disappointment has dimmed the
lustre of his eye, sorrow has thrown its gloom
upon his countenance, be looks back upon the
waking dreams of youth, and sighs for its futili
ty; each revolving year seems to diminish his
happiness, and he discovers that the season of
youth where the pulse of anticipation beats high,
is the season of enjoyment. Mho is he of the
aged locks ? His form is bent and tottery ; Lis
footsteps move more rapidly towards the tomb;
he looks back upon the past; his days appear
to be few, he confesses that they were evil, the
magnificence of the great is to him vanity ; the
hilarity of youth, folly; he considers how soon
the gloom of death must the one, and
disappointment the other, the world presents
little to attract, and nothing to delight him, still
lie would linger in it, and still he would lengthen
out his days; thought of ‘beauty’s bloom, of
fancy’s Hash, of music's breath, he is formed to
exclaim, ‘I have no pleasure in time.’ A few
years of infirmity, insanity, and pain, must con
sign him to idiocy or the grave; yet this was the
gay, the generous, the high-souled boy, who
beheld his ascending path of life strewed with
out a thorn. Such is human life, but such can
not be the ultimate destinies of man.
Unwritten Kisses. — By Fanny Fern. —A
sensible contemporary says: ‘The women
ought to make a pledge not to kiss a man who
uses tobacco.’
So they had ! but the deuce of it is, all the
handsome men use it in some shade l And kis~
sing is a little luxury not to be dispensed with!
As to a female kiss, faugh! there’s no efterves
cense in it! its as flat as an unmixed soda pow
der ! If I’m victimized that w ay, 1 always take
an early application of soup and water! Tou
will see women practice it sometimes, just to
‘keep their hand in ;’ (lips I mean) but its-a sub
stitute ! a sham article ! done half the time to
tantalize some of the male audience! (I hope to
be pardoned for turning ‘State’s evidence,’ but 1
don’t care a pin if I ain’t!) Now kissing is a
natural gift, (not to be acquired by any bungler)
when you meet with a gifted brother,‘make a
note on’t,’ as Capt. Cnt'tle says. There’s your
universal kisser, who can’t distinguish between
your kiss and your grandmother's; faugh!
There's your philosophical, transcendental kis
ser, who goes ‘through the motions’ in the air!
there’s—oh !my senses ! —they say there’s such
a thing as ‘unwritten music,’ and ‘unwritten
poetry.’ I have my private suspicions there
are ‘unwritten kisses.’
Muggins says he never tried bark but once
and then it was so mixed with bite it was ques
tionable whether it did him much good. It
was recommended by a gardner, as a cure for
a depraved appetite for other people's fruit.
Miss Nancy says, that while folks are “inven
ting this and inventing that, she wishes to gra
cious! somebody would invent something for
bringing up children, and than she would get
married.”
Be not angry that you cannot make others
as you wish them to be, since you cannot make
yourself what you wish to be.
Nothing is more amiable than true modesty,
and nothing more contemtible than false mod
esty; the one guards virtue, the other betrays
it.
Happiness is promised not to the learned but
to the good.
The rose has its thorns, the diamonds its
specks, and the best man his failings.
The most effectual way to secure happiness to
ourselves is to confer it upon others.
There are reproaches which give praise, and
praise which give reproach.
Sentimental.
The rose that blushes like the morn
Bedecks the valley, low ;
And so dost thou, sweet infant corn,
On my Angelina’s toe ;
But on the rose there grows a thorn
That breeds disastrous woe,
And so dost thou remorseless corn,
Ou Angelina’s toe.
It is not decent for a person to make a.show
above his or her means,
It is not decent for a person to be running
in debt when he does no*, intend to pay.
It is not decent to be praising yourself.
It is not decent to starve your family by
spending your money for liquor.
It is not decent to say one thing and mean
another.
It is not decent to be borrowing newspapers
when you can get the Georgia Citizen for the
trifling sura of two dollars a.year.
Words of sympathy lift not up the needy;
only full sacks can stand on end.
Love is a weapon that will conquer men
when all other weapons fail.
If you would not have affliction visit you
twice, listen at once to what it teaches.
Never scoff at religion ; it is not only the proof
of a wicked heart; but low breeding.
As we go in life we find we cannot afford ex
citement, and we learn to be parsimonious in
our emotions.
llow about tbe girls ? Are they not, in these
days, equally inclined to precocious develop
ment? We have been almost petrified with as
tonishment at the rapid change in families
where women children were the principle pro*
duction. At their age their mothers were happy
over a tin whistle;, they are sighing over a lock
et, and when the former where hugging a doll,
the latter are cherishing a daguerrotype. The
metamorphosis from pantalets to long clothes is
so sudden as to frighten all their romping cous
ins into puritanic propriety. At ten they sit on
the sofa and receive calls, and at fifteen are pos
itively shocked that they have remained so long
unmarried; Such is woman’s progress.
The three Candidates. — A Dutchman who
has just returned from a visit to his friends in
Kentucky was applied to the other day to know
how the Presidential election was going in that
state —who was the foremost man in Kentucky?
Said Hans in reply :
“Dere is tree candidates running in Old Iven
tuck where lav been. Firstch, dere is one dey
call “Old Chippewa”—lie will get a shmart
sprinkle of votesch. Den dere ish “Old Lundy’s
Bane,” he will make a mighty g-o-o-d run;—but
dere be one dey call “Cld Churubusco,’’ he will
scweep de flatter!’’
“Dear mother,” said a delicate little girl, “I
have broken your china vase.’’ “Well you are
a naughty, careless troublesome little thing, al
ways in some mischief; yon go up stairs and
stay in the closet till I send for you.’’ And
this was a Christian mother’s answer to the tear
ful little culprit who had struggled with and
conquered the temptation to tell a falsehood to
screen her fault! With a disappointed, dishear
tened look, the child obeyed, and at that mo
ment was crushed in her little heart the sweet
flower of truth, perhaps never again in after
years to be revived to life. Oh what wore the
loss of a thousand vases in comparison?

Physician or family should he without. They are valuable in
struments for Planters. Such are their simplicity that any nngro

many certificates given in their, favor by the first of the Medi

I have examined Mr. Thomas’s Breast Glass, and had it tried

I hereby certify that I have made trial of Mr. Thomas’ Cup

I have had'repeated'occasions to observe the action of the
Cupping Glass and Artificial Leech and Breast Glass, invented
by Mr. Thomas, and am highly pleased with therm The ad
vantages they possess over the ordinary aparatus are numer

object is effected, their neatness and readiness of application,
their simplicity and apparent durability, all recommend them
strongly to the notice of those who may require them. In ev

DR. SPENCER'S VEGETABLE PILLS i

1)R. STRONG’S
FECTORIAL STOMACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Cough, Asthma, Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep
sia, Erysipelas, Salt Rheum, Disease of the Heart, Fevers
of all kinds, Obstructed and painful Menstruation, Inflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Back and Side, and all dis
eases arising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and had feelings from eating toohear
-0 ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, and aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cougli mix
tures in the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and ftar
saparillas of the present day. being whatthe public have long
needed, and putat such a low price that all will be able to ob
tain them. One box of these pills which costs but 25 cents
possesses four times the power in curing thndiseasesfor which
they are recommended, than the high priced one dollar bottles
of any of the expectorants, syrups, balsams, or tnrsaparillaa
now before the public—and a fair trial of them win convince
any one of the truth of this statement.
They possess properties peculiarly adapted to restore the
lungs and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration, and render the lungs free from that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases ; and the proprietor feels au
thorized to state, from personal observation, and witnessing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude of cases,
that there is not another remedy in the w hole Materia Medica
capable of imparting such healing properties to the lungs and
vital organs as these pills.
Each box contains 25 Pills—Price 25 cents.
ALSO
DTI. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SINATIV E PILLS.
WARRANTED TO BE PURELY VEGETABLE.
Health is too Important to be trifled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinary pursuits, yet neglect that which is far more impor
tant to them, their health. If these invaluable Pills were kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on the first symptoms
of disease, they would save many a valuable life, sacrificed
by delay. They are a most superior medicine in the cure of
all Billions Complaints, Chills and Fever, Dyspepsia, Costive
ness, Liver Complaint, Jaundice,Sick Headache,Scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blood, equalize the circulation, restore the
liver, kidneys and other secretory organs to a healthy tone and
action ; and from their tonic effects, prevent that general pro
stration and debility of the stomach and intestines that is so
often the consequence of a free use of other purgative meat
cines. Hence as a Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
when taken according to the directions, they never fail to cure
the very worst cases of Pile*, after all other remedies fail.
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in her efforts
to overcome disease; they must, therefore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.
They have been used in every form ol disease, and in various
climates, and their excellence proved, in cases where medica
skill and many boasted remedies had failed to afford relief.
Diseases that seemed tiic most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use,and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
ly named, disorganize the secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blood.
A medicine, therefore, that is purely vegetable, and aids na
ture to restore these important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in all forms of disease. Dr. Strong s
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, anil are
therefore not a mere purgative medicine, but a general remover
of disease, a purifier of the blood, and a strengthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Pills never afterwards feel
willing to be without them, which is sufficient proof of their
good qualities.
Each box contains 25 Pills. Price 25 cents.

Gentlemen: —Your Hebrew Plaster lias cured ine of pains
of which I have suffered for twelve years past. During this
period I labored under an affliction of my loins and side, and
tr.ed many remedies that my own medical experience suggest

and am now’by its good effects entirely cured. I will recom
mend the Jew David or Hebrew Plaster to all who are suffer
ing from contraction of the muscles, or permanent pains in
the side or back.
The people of Georgia have but to become acquainted with
its virtues when they will resort to its use.

DR. ROGERS’
Liverwort and Tar.
AS.YFEand ceitain cure for Coughs, Colds, Croup, Asth
ma, Consumption of the Rungs, Spitting of Blood,
bronchitis, Hooping Cough, and all Pulmonary Affections.
A Lovely Young Lady Cured of'Consumption.
JT'F” The following is from the pen of YVm. H Lcvison,
Esq. the distinguished editor of the United States Military
and Naval Argus, date New York, January 26, 1850. What
could be more conclusive?
‘lt is seldom we permit ourselves to occupy a space in these
columns to speak in praise of any article in the patent medi
cine way ; but when we see the life of a fellow-creature saved
by the use of any medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, if not our duty, te give a simple statement of facts, that
others may, in like manner, be benefitted. The case which
has induced us to pen this article was that of a young lady
of our acquaintance, who by frequent exposure to the
night air, contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs
before its ravages conld be stayed. (This occurred two years
ago this winter.) Various remedies were used, but with very
little effect or benefit. The Cough grew worse, with copious
expectoration, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow cheek
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its worst on her
delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and al
though he would not admit to the young lady that she really
had the consumption, yet he would give no encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to make
use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers’ Compound Syrup of Liverwort
and Tar, and we are happy to state she was perfectly cured
in less than three months by this medicine alone, after even
hope was destroyed. It is useless to comment on such a case
as this, for the simple truth will reach where polished fiction
never can. If any doubt the authenticity of this statement,
let them call at this office.— V. & Military and Naval Argus,
No. 19 Chatham street , N. Y.
Testimonies of the New York Press.
From the N. Y. Courier, Aug. 13, 1850.
Dr. lingers’ Syrup of Liverwort and Tar. —YVe have heard
several important cures recently effected by this excellent
medicinal pieparation, and in one instance that catne under
our observation, we can speak confidently. One of our em
ployees, who had suffered severely from a long standing cold,
during the past week commenced the use of this medicine,
and his cold has entirely disappeared.
From the New York Mirror, Sep. 2, 1850.
L iverwort and Tar. —Os the virtues of Dr. Rogers’ Cough
Medicines prepared from the above articles, it is needless now
to speak; its efficacy in speedily curing Coughs, Colds, and oth
er lung complaints, which too frequently, if neglected, result
in consumption, is too well established in public confidence
to need eulogy now.
From the New York Despatch, Aug. 25, 1849.
YVe have heretofore taken occasion to give our testimony
in favor of the curative properties of Dr. Rogers’ Compound
Syrup of Liverwort and Tar, and would here repeat the ad
vice already given, for all persons who are afflicted with Con
sumption, or any of the premonitory symptoms, to make a tri
al of Dr. Rogers’ preparation.

DR. DENNIS’
GEORGIA SARSAPARILLA.
For Jaundice , Sick Head-ache, Dizziness, Loss of
Appetite, Constipation of the Bowels, Files, caus
ed by Costiveness, Fain in the Bones, or Kheurna
tism, caused by the use of Mercury, Syphilis, Scro
fula, Boils, Ulcers, f-c.
fT'MUS preparation is made as pure ns possible. Its bitter taste
X and beneficial affects in diseases of the Liver, anil diseases
arising from an impure state of the Blood, prove it to be the
purest and most useful preparations of Sarsaparilla that is made.
Those who have used the various preparations of Sarsapa
rillo will find, by the taste .and etrect, that there is more Sarsa
parilla in one bottle of Dr. D’s. preparation, than in half a
dozen bottles as it is generally made.
That it might be more particularly adapted to professional
use. nothing but the pure Sarsaparilla has been used, that for
different diseases, physicians might combine or prescribe with
it, such articles as they might consider most appropriate in
cases under their treatment.
Its alterative and mildly purgative effect upon the bowels
make it not only a good substitute for Mercury, but useful in
removing all diseases arising from the imprudent use of Mer
cury.
