At ft church-meeting in Connecticut, for the
purpose of tilling a vacant deacouslnp, some di
versity of opinion, strange to say, appeared to
exist among the brethren, as to who should fill
that very peculiarly profitable office. Atter a
deal of talk, and no progress, brother 13-
an honest, straight-forward farmer, having in
mind the Democratic Convention, probably*
thought thafc.a third man might “unite the par
ty,” and made ap his mind to propose the thing,
although lie had never made the attempt to
speak in public. Rising with caution and hesi
tation, lie delivered himself ‘to the point thus:
“Gentlemen, T am not used to public speaking,
but in my opinion, Dan Baxter would make
an all-fired good deacon ‘ It is needless to say
that “Dan Baxter” was “elected.”
A Kentucky paper says it is getting to be
very fashionable in that quarter to enclose a
dollar with marriage notices, when sending
them to the printer. A good custom, thatought
to prevail everywhere:
Six dollars to printer and priest,
No sensible man could refuse ;
Five dollars to render him blest,
And one to publish the news !
A counter-jumper sang out to his country
cousin, who had come to town to see the ‘lions,
‘Why, my dear fellow, you look awful green.
You look as though you couldn't say boo to a
goose.’ ‘ Boo'’ returned the countryman.
A western editor, in puffing a village hotel,
says that anew tooth-brush lias been supplied
for the washroom, attached to an iron chain, so
the public will always be accommodated in that
respect.

Irishman —Good mornin’ till ye, Mike;

Irishman. —Faith and ye’re right there Mike;
and thin, whenever it gets in the way o’ raining,’
the devil the bit o’ dhry wither will we git as
long as the wet spell howlds.”
Curious Epitaphs ; copied from an English
paper some twenty years since.
The first was taken from a small village grave
yard in Dorsetshire;
“ Beneath this slab lie the remains
Os one in life called Sally Gaines.
Hat life was short, her body tall,
She had three sons, and this is all. ’
The following was written on the death of a
tailor named Button :
“Here lies a man, heaven rest his soul 1
Whose grave is but a button hole.’’
The person mentioned in the following ap
pears to have been a school teacher, and the
author was evidently skilled in Latin pronuncia
tion :
“In this tomb is the body of Roderick Ilill,
Which, ifr.ot ascended, lies here still.
A school master he was twenty years in
this place ,
And now he lias gone, Requicscat in pace]’
The following was taken from the same church
yard as the first:
“Here lies the man Teter, and Mary his
w ife;
United in death though divided in life.’’
The following derives its chief odity from the
peculiarity of the rhyme, and the substitution of
the word “perpendicular’ tor “upright.’ :
“Here lies the body of Deacon David Au
ticular,
Who in the ways of God walked perpen
dicular.”
The lady mentioned in the next epitaph must
have been a warm advocate of “woman’s rights”
quite a Mrs. Caudle, in short; and the lines
were probably indited by her husband painfully
sensible of these qualities;
“Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Rhett,
Who teas a whole team and a horse to let!”
Dividing the House. —An old fellow was
turned out of doors for disrespectful behavior;
repairing to the next neighbor, he hailed him
with a
“Good morning, Mr. N.”
“Good morning Johnny,” was the reply.
“Well, neighbor G. and I have been dividing
the house.”
“Ah! Johnny, and how did you divide?”
“Ila! ha! ha! —why, he took the inside and
gave me the out.’ 1
Winchell, the Humorist, tells us the follow
ing which happened to his knowledge, some
months since. A gentleman seeing a crowd,
and stepping up to enquire the cause, thus ac
costed a son of Ireland :
“Could you inform me wlmt occasions this
large crowd ?”
“Well, sir; yes sir; I believe it is a funeral,
sir.”
“Thank you, sir. Could you tel! me who it is
that is dead ?”
“Why, yes sir. As near as I can learn, sir,
it’s the man who is in the coffin, sir!’’
Sammy, my boy, what are breaches of trust?
Said a father to his smartest boy.
What a funny question, pa ! *
Can’t you anstver it, Sammy ?
A cs, pa, but I don’t like to.
‘What a silly boy come out with it.
Well, pa, your Sunday trousers are ‘breeches
of trust,’ cos you got ’em on tick.
[Exit pa, whistling ]
Wisdom of Town Ladies.— ‘Pa, why don t
you buy a hen, so that we could, have all the
eggs we wanted V
‘My dear, one hen would not lay all the eggs
we want.’
‘Why yes it would pa, we only use a dozen
eggs a day, and a good hen would.certainl) lay
that many.’
Our devil, who is a knowing fellow, says that
this young lady is a sister to the one who thought
that milk was pumped out of cows, and that
the tail was the pump-handle!
The following was found in the pocket of a
suicider. No inquest was held on the body:
‘Whv is a rhinocerous after swallowing a tiger
cat, like a Roman swordsman? Because lie is
ylad-he-ate-her .’
Greene, of the Boston Post, is supposed to
have perpetrated the above.
Why would a spider be a good correspondent?
Because he drops a line at every post.
Avery pious lady remarked the other day
that she wanted but little here below but wanted
that little long.
An exchange paper says, the most dignified,
glorious and lovely work of nature is woman,
the next is man, then Berkshire pigs.

Arriving at the depot, the conductor, as usual,
makes the fact known and singing out:)

Tall Yankee, amid roars of laughter from, the
passengers :
‘Ef course a man will sit; just show me a

Hr. Franklin, in speaking of the intem
perate drinker, says he will never, or seldom al
low that he is drunk , he may be boozy, cozy,
foxed, merry, mellow, fuddled, groatable, con
foundedly cut; may see two moons; be among
the Phihsitiues; in a very good humor; have
been in the sun ; is a little feverish; pretty
well entered, &c., but never drunk.
l Gen. Jackson's father was an Irishman; the
* first employment he had in Charleston, South
Carolina, where he had landed, was to carry
tli hod. The mother of Col. Fremont was a
poor washerwoman! Only think of these
tilings and don’t be disrespectful to a mason’s

Leeches, Breast, Cupping & Eye Glasses&c.
r I' , IIOMAS’ Patient Artificial Leech, Breast, Cupping and
j Eye Glasses, are new Surgical intruinents that no
Physfcian or family should be without. They art valuable in
struments for Planters. Such are their simplicity that any negro
can, in a few minutes, be taught to use them, and no possi
bility of getting out of order. The following are a few of
many certificates given in their favor by the first of the Medi
cal Faculty of New V'ork and this city:
1 have examined and tested Thomas’ Glasses for Cupping,
Leeching and drawing the breasts. They are simple and use
ful and possess many advantages over any that I have ever
used for the same purpose. J. W. BENSON, M. D.

New York, Feb. 5, 1852.
I have examined Mr. Thomas’s Breast Glass, and had it tried
under my inspection, I think very well of it, and believe it
will answer for which it was intended better than anything
with which I am acquainted. R. GILMAN, M. 1).
Prof, of Midwifery, College of Physicians and Surgeons.
New York, Feb. 2, 1852.
I hereby certify that I have made trial of Mr. Thomas’ Cup
ping Glass and Artificial Leeches, anil that I have been well
satisfied with their operation. I recommend to the members
of the Medical Profession as an ingenious and useful invention.

New York Hospital, Feb. 2, 1852.
I have had repeated occasions to observe the action of the
Cupping Glass and Artificial Leech and Breast Glass, invented
by Mr. Thomas, and am highly pleased with them. The ad
vantages they possess over the ordinary aparatus are numer
ous and important. The ease and rapidity with which their
object is effected, their neatness and readiness of application,
their simplicity and apparent durability, all recommend them
strongly to the notice of those who may require them. In ev
ery case in which I have employed them in the Hospital, their
j effect has been perfectly satisfactory. C. M. ALI.F.N, M.D.

PECTORIAL STOMACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Cough, Asthma, Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep

of all kinds, Obstructed and painful Menstruation, Inflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Back and Side, and all dis
easesarising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and had feelings from eutmg too hear
ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, and aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cough mix
tures in the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and Sar
saparillas of the present day.being whatthe public have long
needed, and put at such a low price that all will be able to ob
tain them. One box of these [dlls which costs but 25 cents
possesses four times the powerin curing the diseases for which
they are recommended, than the high priced one dollar bottles
of any of the expectorants, syrups, balsams, or sarsaparillas
now before the public—and a fair trial of them will convince
any one of the truth of this statement.
They possess properties peculiarly adapted to restore the
lungs and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration, and render the lungs free from that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases; and the proprietor feels au
thorized to stale, from personal observation, and witnessing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude °[ taM ' s
that there is not another remedy in the whole Materia M< dica
callable of imparting such healing properties to the lungs and
vital organs as these pills.
Each box contains 25 Pills—Price 25 cents.
DR. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SANATIVE PILLS.
WARRANTED TO BE TURKEY” VEGETABLE.
Health is too important to be trilled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinary pursuits, yet neglect that which ,s
lant to them, their aeatth. If these invaluable Pills A ere kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on the first symptoms
of disease! they would save many a valuable life, sacrificed
bv delay. They are a most superior medicine in the cure of
ail Billions Complaints, Chills and Fever, Dyspepsia Coet.ve
ness, Liver Complaint. Jaundice, Sick Headache, scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blood, equalize the circulation, restore the
liver, kidneys and other secretory organs to a healthy tone and
aetion • and from their tonic effects, prevent thatgeneral pro
motion and debility of the stomach and intestines that is so
often the consequence of a free use of other purgative medi
cines Hence as a Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
When taken according to the directions, they never fail to cure
the very worst cases of Ptfes, after all other remedies fail.—
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in her efforts
to overcome disease ; they must, therefore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.—
They have been used in every form of disease, and in various
climates, and their excellence proved, in cases where inodica
skill and many boasted remedies had tailed to afford relief.—
Diseases that seemed the most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use,and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
ly named, disorganize the secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blood.
A medicine, therefore, that is purely rrgrtahlr. and aids na
ture to restore these important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in ail forms of disease. Dr. Strong’s
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, and are
therefore not a mere purgative medicine, but a general remover
of disease, a purifier of the blood, and a streiigthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Pills never afterwards feel
willing to be without them, which is sufficient proof of their
good qualities.

.1. Hip, Back. Limbs and Joints; Scrofula, King’s Evil, White
Swellings. Hard Tumors, Stiff Joints, and all fixed pains what

These Plasters possess the advantages of being put up in

Thiscelebrated Pain Extractor has been so extensively used
by Physicians and the people in general, both in this country
and Europe, that it is almost needless to say any tiling about,
it. Yet there may be some who stand in need of its healing
powers who have not yet tried it. For their sakes we will sim
ply state what it has done in thousands of cases, and what it
will do for (hem when tried.
A VOICE FROM GEORGIA.
Rrad the following testimony from a Physician.
Ocntlrmen: —Your Hebrew Plaster lias cured me of pains
of which I have suffered for twelve years past. During this
period l labored under an affliction of my loins and side, and

and am now by its good effects entirely cured. I will recom

The people of Georgia have but to become acquainted with
its virtues when they will resort to its use.

DR. ROGERS’
Liverwort and Tar.
A SAFE and Ctiitnin cure for Coughs, Colds, Croup, Asth
ma, Consumption of the Lungs, Spitting of Blood,
Bronchitis, Hooping Cough, and all Pulmonary Affections.
A Lovely Young Lady Cared of Consumption.
Z~ST rite following is from the pen of Wm, H Levison,
Esq. the distinguished editor of the United States Military
and Naval Argus, date New York, January 26, 1850. What
could he more conclusive?
’lt is seldom we permit ourselves to occupy a space in these
columns to speak in praise of any article in the patent medi
cine way ; but when we see the life of a fellow-creature saved
by ihc use of any medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, if not our duty, te give a simple statement of facts, that
others may, in like manner, be benefitted. The case which
has induced us to pen this article was that of a young lady
of our acquaintance, who by frequent ex|osure to the
night air, contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs
before its ravages conld be stayed. (This occurred two years
ago this winter.) Various remedies were used, but with very
little effect or benefit. The Cough grew worse, with copious
expectoration, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow cheek
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its worst on her
delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and al
though he would not admit to the young lady that she really
had the consumption, yet he would give uo encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to make
use of a bottle of l)r. Rogers’ Compound Syrup of Liverwort
and Tar, and we are happy to state she was perfectly cured
in less than three months by this medicine alone, after even
hope was destroyed. It is useless to comment on such a case
as this, for the simple truth will reacirwhere polished fiction
never can. If any doubt the authenticity of this statement,
let them call at this office. — V. S. Military and A'aval Jlrgns,
jXo. 19 Chatham street, A*. Y.
Testimonies of the New York Press.
From the N. Y. Courier, Aug. 13, 1850.
Dr. Ropers’ Syrup of hi err wort and Tar. —\Ve have heard
several important cures recently effected by this excellent
medicinal pteparntion, and in one instance that came under
our observation, we can speak confidently. One of our em
ployees, who had suffered severely from a long standing cold,
during the past week commenced the use of this medicine,
and his cold has entirely disappeared.
From the New York Mirror, Sep. 2, 1830.
L rvrrtesrt and Tar. —Of the virtues of Dr. Rogers’Cough
Medicines prepared from the above articles, it is needless now
to speak ; its efficacy in speedily curing Coughs,Colds, and oth
er lung complaints, which too frequently, if neglected, result
in consumption, is too well established in public confidence
to need eulogy now.
From the New York Despatch, Aug. 25, 1849.
\\ e have heretofore taken occasion to give our testimony
in favor of the curative properties of Dr. Rogers’ Compound
Syrup of Liverwort and Tar, and would here repeat the ad
vice already given, for all persons who are afflicted with Con
sumption, or any of the premonitory symptoms, to make a tri
al of Dr. Rogers’ preparation.

preparation is made aa pure as possible. Its bitter taste
_L and beneficial affects in diseases of the Liver, and diseases
arising from an impure state of the Blood, prove it to he the
purest and most useful preparations of Sarsaparilla that is made.
Those who have used the various preparations of Sarsapa
rillo will find, by the taste and effect, that there is more Sarsa
parilla in one bottle of Dr. D’s. preparation, than in half a
dozen bottles as it is generally made.
That it might be more particularly adapted to professional
use, nothing but the pure Sarsaparilla has been used, that for
different diseases, physicians might combine or prescribe with
it, such articles as they might consider most appropriate in
cases under their treatment.
Its alterative and mildly purgative effect upon the bowels
make it not only a good substitute for Mercury, but useful in
removing all diseases arising from the imprudent use of Mer
cury.
