The following communication was received from
: Phi Kappa Society :
Pm Kaita Hall, Jan. 24, 1853.
Rut a few days since the loss of a College Com
mon was lamented in our midst. The cypress leaf.
>pped by the hand of regard over his early grave,
yet fresh, and the tears of aff-cliou at his untimely
parture have not yel ceased to flow. To-day, aim
er announcement has been received, which, fur from
< viating, has stil l more painfully increased our re
nt sorrow. Sudden is the hand of fate—painful
e traces that it leaves behind. Its coming, no man,
t even the angels of heaven, can foretell. Suateh
from life in the morning, the night of death has
ddeuly overwhelmed him. And as it hath pleased
Imighty Cod, in the dispersation of his divine Provi
nce, thus unexpectedly to remove from our midst,
r beloved fellow-student T. B. J. LAMAR, in all
>’ vigor and bloom of youth, we feel called upon to
pi. ire deeply bis premature death. Our deceased
rother, a member of the Senior Class and Demos
enian Society has sustained during his connection
fill College, a character surpassed by none, in point
morality and gentlemanly deportment. As an ex
ession of our feelings upon this melancholy occa
on, be it resolved,
Ist. That we most sincerely sympathize with the
“mosthenian Society, in the loss of one of its most
rd-nt members ; ami that we will cherish a kind re
"ilectiouof his manly bearing and generous disposi
on.
2d. That with the tears of friends and relations,
r e would mingle out own, and would feel reconciled
nrselves, to the severity of this stroke, could we but
iffordthe soothing balm of consolation, to the discou
olate heart of a widowed mother.
3d. That villi combined emotions of sorrow, we
ire called upon to mingle in memory his many virtues
md excellencies of character, with those of our own
ost brother—for both of whom we now wear the usual
•udge of mourning for thirty days.
4th. I hat a copy of these proceedings he sent to

its success and permanency. Our general plans have been
laid after the German in >d !s, so universally approved by
scholars and experienced educators. Vocal Music being
embraced in the regular course, and taught the whole School
in the nr >st scientific and thorough manner—an exercise as
favorable to the health and happiness, as it is improving and
