One of the Mean Men.
Many instances have heen ciled of mean
ness, and several |>eisons have been held up as
example, possessing that quality in the super
lative degree. One of the most ‘eminent men,’
of this class that we ever knew was a ‘boss
carpenter,’ who lived not far Irom Massachu
setts. He had, of course, a youngest appren
tice, on whom his meanness-was concentrated,
like the rays of the sun covered’ by a turning
glass.
The boy, whom we will call Joe, and who
was very cunning withal, was obliged to sub
mit to much rigor as regarded the ee'-’erity of
his labors and the scantiness of his clothing
and food. One evening, Joe was supping on
the fragments of a repast that had been set be
foie some guests —the good wife had ‘had com
pany’ that afternoon —and he committed the
enormity of applying a lump of butter that
was left on his plate to a chunk of gingerbread
which he was about to swallow. Alas, tor Jue,
his master opened the kitchen door just as he
was opening his mouth, and before he could
swallow the delicious morsel his crime was de
tected.
The indignant master was struck aghast, at
first, by this specimen of juvenile turpitude,
but he seized die young epicure by the hair
of the head and gave him an unmerciful beat
ing.
Joe went to bed sortowiug, but comforted
himself with the reflection that lie was four
teen years old, and he bad‘but seven years
more to be flogged for eating buttered ginger
bread.’
Joe was ingenious, and before he had com
posed himself asleep that night lie had formed
a plan of revenge upon his master.
According to his plan, he arose early the
next morning, and, as lie was hurrying on his
clothes, lie mut ered —-
‘I II fix a s ory on the old feller —l'l! raise
the laugh agnin-t him—l 11 larn him to lick
me so like blazes.’
As soon as Jo* was dressed, he rushed into
the streets, and ran toward the principal lio'el,
baw ling lust ly, and stimulating the most clam
orous grief. As lie tore ai ng the street, bel
lowing like a yearling bull, and iid-Uing his
eyes with a dingy poCKet-liandkc'diief. lie
naturally attracted the attention of everv per
son within sight or hearing. By the time he
had reached the front of the hotel, quite a
crowd was ready to intercept him, as he made
a faint to rush by.
“ What’s the matter?’’ cried a dozen voices.
‘O, dear, O, dear! its so dreadful!’ bellowe I
Joe, twisting his countenance into the simili
tude of a baked apple.
•What’s so dreadful ?’
‘Oh, my master’s dead —died such an awful
death, too— O. dear, dear !’
‘Your master dead ! awful death l llow did
it happen ? Stop your confounded bellowing,
and tell us about it.’
O, dear, said Joe, bis voice broken with coun
terfeit sobs, ‘you know what a small soul my j
master had—wot an old fc-l’er (sob) lie was
for money (sob.) Wal, it ’pears that somebo
dy (sob) had sulhin agin him (sob.) and went
last night —O, dear, dear, its so orful 1’
‘Look here, young man ! stop that crying
and tell the story !’
‘Wal, my master used to sleep (sob) with
his moutb wide open, a snoring, (sob) and
somebody went last night and bated a steel
trap with a so pence and set it oil his piller,
and kilched his soul afore mornin, and left hi>
body iu the bed. Boohuo hoo! O, dear,
dear!’
And with this Joe made a break through
the astonished crowd and disappeared around
a corner, while the welkin was ringing with
shouts of laughter.
Joe’s master did not hear the last of his aw-
Utl decease for a long time, and those who knew
him best declare that Joe’s story was no myth,
and that the longer his body na'ks about
clutching everything that‘the law allows him,’ |
the strongest evidence he gives that he is truu- j
bled by no such incumbrance as a soul.
PROGiiEssrvs People.—The progressive spirits of
tbe world are thus fast off in the ‘Carriers’ Address of
the New York Courier. There is much truth, if net
poetry, in the extract:
A twelve hour day they’ve voted tedious ;
And as for uight*.tUey think it hid<ous;
Idark, dismal,.bi&rtk, and, worse yet .juiet,
They can’t.see we’pe the gainers by it.
Couki they Ixii'e charge of till creation,
The Earth would quicken its gyration.
Tiy and send some man through Sim’s Hole,
If it cost all the wealth of Astor
To go and butter the North Pole
Suthbl the world would turn round faster.
A Family* Scene.— A gentleman deeply
engaged in study, and a lady, pretending to
knit, is perplexing him with her questions.—
Lady, (in the drawling affectionate style:) Ma
deah! correctly speaking, what is a dentist-
Gentleman, (short, sharp and rather cross:)
Dentist is derived from dent, French for teeth;
dentist is -a .roan who pulls out teeth. Lady,
(after knitting once round, in order to give the
gentleman time to become immersed in his
book again,) Ma deah! you said this morning
that Prof. Musty was a great linguist. Is not
linguist derived from the Latin linyun, a tongue?
Gentleman, (tartly,) Yes. Lady: Well, then,
:s a linguist a man who pulls tongues out?—
Gentleman, (very decidedly:) No “madam, I
wish he did. Exit lady, in a huff.
i?ITMr. Snigsbee, you Said the defendant was
in love; how do you know that?” “He reads
novels upside- down, and writes poetry in the
day book, when it should be cheese.” “Any
other reason?” “Yes sir, lie shaves without lather,
and very frequently mistakes the sleeves of his
coat for the legs of his pantaloons; an error
that he don’t discover till he tries to fasten the
tails to his suspenders.” “A clear case —call
the next witness.
<Kr A little hoy h<d his lirst pocket knife,
ana *f6r several days used it himself, and ex
tended the privilege of the occasional use of
his treasures to his little playmates. One eve
ning, he was kneeling at In’s mother’s knee,
saying customary prayer, which he closed up
in-these words: “And please God, give little
Jimmy Bailv a knife of his own, so he won’t
want to borrow mine all the time?”
of our exchanges are giving the
women folks a terrible berating about the “dir
ty, filthy practice,” as they politely term it, of
daubing their pretty little mouths with snuff.
We reckon, now, that “dipping” snuff is not a
much filthier practice than chewing nigger
head tobacco and guzzling bald-faced whiskey.

00“ Every once in a while, some medical
chap-startles the public with a long article on
the subject of small waists. The ladies no
doubt injure their health very much bv redu
cing that part of their persons to wasp-like pro
portions. But we have noticed that they
generally get over it after marrying.
££?~An old bachelor says women are so
fond of appearance that if you could make
them believe that there are no looking-glasses
in heaven, they would set no more value on
salvation than they do cm a poor relative.
may be compared to fig trees
growing on a precipice, whose fruit, men taste
not; hut cows and vultures devour.
JfSTllow doyougeton with your arithmetic
and catechism?” asked a father of his little boy,
the other night. “I’ve ciphered through ad
dition, subtraction, justification, sanctification
and adoption,” answered the little fellow.”

A Lovely Young Lady Cured of Consumption.
Z~F“ l’he following is from the pen of Win. II I.ovison,
! Ks*|. the distinguished editor of the United Slates Militarv
and Naval Argus, date New York, January £O, it* .10. What
could be more conclusive?
‘lt is seldom we permit ourselves to occupy a space in these
columns to speak in praise es any article in the patent medi
cine way ; but when we see the life of a fellow-creature saved
by ilie use of any medicine whatever, we consider it as .-air
right, it not our duty, te give a simple statement of facts, that
Athens may, iri like manner, be Uenefuted. The case which
has induced us to pen this article was Hint of a young ‘adv
of our acquaintance, who bv frequent exposure to the
night air, contracted a Cold which settled on the Rungs
before its ravages could be stayed. (This occurred two vents
ago this winter.) Various remedies were used, but w ith very
little effect or benefit. Tbe Cough grew worse, with copious
expectoration, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow cheek
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its worst on her
delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and al
j though lie would not admit to the young lady that she really
| had the consumption, yet he would give no encouragement as
Ito a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to make
use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers’ Compound Syrup of l.iv erwort
and Tar, and we are happy to state she was perfectly cured
in less than three months by this medicine alone, after even
■ hope was destroyed. It isuseless to comment on such a case
las this, for the simple truth will reach where polished fiction
i never can. If any doubt the anthenticily of this statement,
j let them call at this office.— V. ij. Military anti -Yarni .Irgus,
