Death of Son. W. T. Colquitt.— This long
. ; ripated event took place in this city, on Mon-
l IV morning list, at the house of Wm. Ross, Esq.
j' ie brother-in-law of the deceased, after a pro
.-I'tedand painful illness. Judge Colquitt was a
man of mark in thiscommonwealth, having held the
ra-ious important stations of Judge of the Superi
or Court. Representative and Senator in Congress,
for Vs a public speaker, few men could eoin
mand greater public attention than Mr. C. As an
advocate at the Bar, he was pre-eminently dis
t;n<mished. On Tuesday his remains were taken
t 0 Oolninbus and interred with the honors due to
a citizen who has so long filled a prominent place
m the public eye.

Brunswick & Florida Railroad.—M r e refer!
the reader to the Report of the Proceedings of the
Annual Meeting of tire Stockholders of the Bruns- |
v,\, k & Florida Railroad Company, which was ‘
held at Brunswick last week. We believe that j
the people of South-Western Georgia can now j
see daylight beaming out upon them from the I
dark cloud which has for months brooded over
this important enterprise. The ‘‘silver lining” of
said cloud begiunetli to appear. Let the people
rejoice at the favorable omen.

History of Turkey, by A. DeLamartine, author
of the “Girondists,” “Travels in the Holy Land,’
ect. Yol. 1. The wars in the East make this
work a very seasonable contribution to the popu
lar literature'Of the clay. And it is a work also
which will vastly interest the reader, from the
ability with which it is written. The name of
Lamartine is itself a sufficient recommendation.

From the Messrs. Richards, we have the “Mys
teries and Miseries ofSan Francisco” by a Califor
nian. “Temptation, or the unknown Heiress,” by
J. Frederick Smith—both from the press of Gar
rett'A’ Ca, 18 Ann street, X. Y. The latter is a
readable book, but we cannot say any thing in
favor of the former. It is a production of the
“Wood and thunder’ school, and of sueh decided-
L ha 1 tendency, that we wonder respectable Pub
lishers and Booksellers will lend themselves to
t! questionable task of spreading the abomina
tion throughout the land.
Democrats proscribing Democrats !—The
Bibb county Democracy, at their late meeting,
adopted the following proscriptive Resolution
against their former brethren who have joined the
“Know Nothings” :
“Resolved, That the Democratic party of Bibb
T ‘ew the secret society of Know-Nothings as hos
tile to our principles and party, and take this oc
casion to express the opinion that any person who
lias become a member of that secret order, and
who continues to adhere thereto , has thereby placed
luniself in antagonism towards the Democratic
party. And the presence of such person or per
sons. at any meeting of the Democratic party, with i
a view to take a part therein, is an act of fraud j
against truth and fair dealing that deserves the !
of every right-minded man of whatever
party.”

One of our exchanges, which we believe professes to

What they know about it*— the Federal ‘Ruin’
man was not peeking round Macon last week, for no
thing. He did not euves-drop among the crowd of pec- j
pie at the Hotels without picking up very important in
formation, as to the doings of the “Thugs.” For exam*
pie, to him are we indebted for the intelligence that 300
! delegates, all told, were in attendance, nine-tenths of

To the same source we are indebted for the information
that the Gubernatorial question was “too knotty a bus
iness for preseut action,” and that the great difficulty j
was to “find a man who has the character for the posi- I

: next October, if the most prominent man of its party
should be beaten by the “nobody” whom the “Thugs” I

are thankful for the information which he has been

ishment They believe that the contiguity of Cuba to
our Southern and the constant machinations of !

render that island a most dangerous possession in the 1
hands of any foreign power, and in view of the constant
indignities which are practiced on out commerce, and
the imminent danger of havinga Free Black Empire al* i
most within sight of our shores, it is the opinion of this I
meeting that the Government can not devise means too ‘
prompt and list decisive to ensure its acquisition upou
the part of the United States.”
