Seeing a statement in your iat paper that the book
publi.-hefl by Mr. T. B. Peterson, entitled “Courtship and
Marriage, or Joys and Sorrows of American Life,” was
not written by Mrs. Hent*, it struck us that you were
speaking perhaps too soon, and thechildri nos the de

that Mrs H. had not written any book with that title,

REMARK S. Admitting the above to lie a correct
• statement of the facts of the c ase, we do not think that
T. B. Peterson is thereby exhonerated from the charge
of an attempted and successful fraud upon the public.
He announced the work “Courtship and Marriage” as
the lust work of Mrs. H. and held oat the idea that it
was a consecutive rolume, never before published. lu
| stead, however, of this being so, the volume is now de
j vlared to be a collection of some of Mrs. Hentz’s fugi
tive pieces published iu newspapers arid magazines,
years ago, to which this publisher has affixed anew ti
tle, which Mrs. H. had not auttioriz. il, and probably nev
er dreamed of In the most favorable light this “trick of
trade ” can be viewed, it is a scurvy trick, designed to
; put money in the publisher’s purse, in an unfair and uu-
I manly manner. It is, in truth, a swindle—a getting
! money under false pretenses—otherwise Peterson would
have honest’y announced, in advance, the true char
acter of the publication.

On Saturday afternoon, the Rev. J. P. Tustin,
agent of the Southern Baptist Publication Socie
ty located at Charleston, addressed an earnest

■ at its disposal the society had published between
forty and fifty volumes, —that to carry on its
work successfully $25,000 were now demanded
and must be obtained in x r alid subscriptions lev
thc first of June; that $5,000 had been pledged
in the State of South Carolina, —$5,000 in the
city of Charleston—ss,ooo in Alabama, —$5,000
were expected from Georgia, and the like amount
from Virginia. Strong speeches were made by
the Agent, Messrs. DeVotie and Henderson of
Alabama, and Ryerson of Augusta. Tlie result
was to run up Georgia's subscription to $4,000.
The Convention adjourned on Tuesday.
