■ii y Killer’s Dance by Moon
light.
;, following episode in the r’fe of the
great danseuse, Fanny Ulsler, is told bv a ca
det at West Point, in a letter to a young
friend of ours, in Delaware County:]
Among the flying bird- of passage which a
few summers since sojourned a brief while a’
West Point, was the celebrated dansense,
Mademoiselle Fanny Ellsler, accompanied by
her male attendant Monsieur Sylve-tre.
Whether the temperature of .August was un
favorable to the continuation of her vaulting
exercise or in a spirit of Isuievrvlen.te, she
thought proper to conceal under a long pet
ticoat those “caoutchouc” extremities, which
l ad turred the heads of the citizens of Briri
r -ore": o it was. that for two dr. vs nfademoi
selle Fanny ravished with her presence the
young heart? cf the United States Com- of
- Never were they more neatly ap
pareled, never performed they fhrir military
duties more soldierlv, than when conscious
that the blue eyes of the ‘‘Matresse tin Ballet
vrorq observing their motions, Even K .
f c leader of the bend was inspired by the
vicinitv; and waltzes and eotillious—especi
ally those tlic charming fig wan 1* hovered in
lier dartres —superceded the usual, hut dow
er, uninspiring marches by which the baital
lion was wont to muster, and a- that war
accoutred body accomplished its evolutions,
you would have irresistibly fancied, tliat in
tend of representing the combinations of a
mimic battle, it was endeavoring to go
through the figures of some gigantic dance
of which all the privates were “sons of Mars’
and all the officers worded prompters.
In the earlier and more sultry parts of the
afternoon, when the cadets were free to don
their “fatigue jackets,” roll down their lx*t l*.
and “nap it” under the shelter of their tents,
ttheir custom hitherto and subsequently,)
they might have been heard kicking the wood
en floors of their canvas arbors, in the deliri
um of “double-shuffle” and the ecstacy of
‘pigeon-wing,” their tarantula recreation bare
ly permitting to be recognized the lively solo
of accompanying flutes. After supper an im
mense “stag dance,” of not less than GO coup
ples came oil’; a peculiar kind of affair, in
which the dancers arrange themselves in two
long lines facing each other, and inside of a
lane ol candles half buried in the ground, and
above these lights a tripod parallel! of tapers,
three muskets forming a tripod, and each
bayonet having a candle spattering upon its
point. Drums, fifes and violins, forming the
orchesta, the cadets all started with a simul
taneous bound, and involving themselves
e-xtricably, it at the last became a mad cora
petitition who should work his legs most ex
cruciatingly, the “cits” looking on with pro
digious approbation; but no one, on the pres
ent occasion, with more satisfaction than
“Ma’maelle,” for whose special benefit the en
tertainment had been gotten up. It was af
ter the “stag” was over and “taps” had been
beaten, (10 o’clock P. M.,) the hour after
which no one is permitted to cross the senti
nel’s posts without giving the challenges of
the guardian sentinel the countersign, (the
masonic rign of military encampments, which
alone can insure egrt-ss and ingress to the pos-
that Pierre D found himself sta
i wired on one of the more remote posts, a
inecure known as “No. 5,” where the fortu
) ate occupant is secure to walk, to sit or
f fund, without much danger of being “hived”
and “skinned, in which case he would in
cur the severe penalty of dismissal, or, what
is worse, forty “extras,” (hours of guard du
ty more than what fall regularly to the share
of a cadet.)
Running along on the outside of this post,
and twenty feet from it, is a gravelled path,
where visitors may promenade, whenever
t hey chose, without molestation or reproof—
r. favorite resort both during the day and uu
iil late at night—thus showing to tlie sentinel
on “No. 5” the face of every person to be
net with on the plain, and is regarded as one
of the chief felicities of tliat station, the re
maining 7 being monotonous enough, heav
en knows, unless one can conceive ideas nov
el and interesting to himself. Pierre and
those on guard with him had been prevented
during the day from approaching near enough*
to the fair dancer to feast their vision as they
would like to have done. Imagine, there
fore, tlie pleasure with which Pierre beheld
her and Sylvestre coming down the graveled
walk toward him. He stopped walking and
gazed on the musing pair with intense op
tics until they strolled opposite, when his
mischievous genius suggested a plot a- orig
inal as it was happy.
“Who comes there?” demanded he, stern
ly. The twain started slightly, surprised by
the suddenness of the challenge; but not
dreaming they were addressed resumed their
stroll.
“Who comes there?” again interrogated
t ie sentinel, yet more gruffly than before, and
bringing his musket to a “charge” so smartly,
that it rung aloud. The twain halted.
“Monsieur, you speak to us?” asked Syl
vestre.
“Yes! stop tliat talking to a sentinel! Ad
vance and give the countersign ?” responded
Pierre in terrible tones.
Sylvestre was so much frightened tliat he
incontinently took to his heels and ran a? fast
at he could to the hotel leaving the lady trem
bling, and strange to say of one generally so
active, incapable of moving a step.
“Advance and give the countersign,’ re
peated Pierre, still retaining his threatening
attitude, and betraying by the ardor of his
looks his admiration for tlie little form before
him, now tremulous as an aspen-leat.
“De countersign,” said Fanny, almost inar
ticulately, “vat you call dat ? ’
“The pass word—la passe parole!” ex
claimed Pierre, crustily.
“Helas! I have it not; I vill send to the
commandante and my servant shall bring it
to you domain, in de morning.”
“What, Madame! have you presumed to
pass along my post without the countersign?”
exclaimed he, affecting the most unqualified
astonishment.
“Ah! Sarc, I did not know,” replied Fan
ny, as she prepared to weep. Here the oth
er sentinels, who in the stillness of the night
had overheard the dialogue, and knew some
sport was brewing, first ascertained tliat ev
erything was quiet and that there were no
lights in the officers’ tents, deserted their
posts and come stealing one by one toward
Pierre, and silently arrayed themselves by his
side. Enveloped in their huge guard cloaks,
which they found necessary to muffle their
mouths withal to suppress their laughter, and
each supporting a formidable weapon, they
formed a tout ensemble that might have alarm
ed firmer nerves than those which had been
(accustomed only to tlie applause of theaters,
*nd ware now for the first time greeted by
; igl ands. The moon shone with a
vnast: tance upon their burnished arms,
sum u light breeze that gently swayed
■‘ j ct ring melancholy cedars blew apart
ark mantles, belts, cartridge-box
d steel, glittering before tie eyes
of the lone woman, caused her to shudder j
with trepidation. The grave hooded figures
moved up to Pierre, nudged liim with their
eibows, and muttered sotto voce “Say, keep !
it up!” “Go it, old fellow!” “Don’t let her
off. my chicken!” “Well done, Pierre, this is
fun!” “Carry it on, and I will invite you to
all my ‘hashes’ next Winter!” “Stir her up
again, Pierre, and I’l treat to lemonade and
sundries in the morning!” “Once more, old
horee-fiy, and 1 11 -land for liquor at Benny’s
to-morrow night!” Could Pierre feel dis
couraged 1
“Madame,” harangued he, “this is the place
which Arnold would have betrayed—the key i
of his comitrv. T*>e miserable agent he cm- .
plm-ed was captured and iguowiniously hung. 1

am standing in the foot prints of Washing
ton! Prepare to die!” Fannv leaped con
vulsively from tb<* earth, and the cadets could
hardly suppress their adthiration of tins invol
untary pas. “Spare me life!” implored the,
danseuse. clasping her hand- and kneeling.
“Tilirptress, that would have me sully the
immaculate star? and stripes; that would I
make me the subject of another infamous
page in the history of West Point: that
would have me in the morning—but tliat

fore a drum head court martial, tried, con
demned. and by tliat bat terry of brazen can
non blown into eternity!”
“ Mat * save, sV com plait, you do not know !

Pierre, with all the hauteur of a soldier, ‘par
don my gallantry iff decline an introduction.’ j

sler.’
•What! way! way! take any shape but i
that and my honor shall lie preserved.’ Ha- j
ting the inconvenience of his musket, Pierre’* i
position on pronouncing these words was de
cidedly dramatic. The attitudes also assumed
by the guard cloaks were half in imitation of
him and half of Macbeth when lie sees the
dagger gleaming in the air. To be sure,
Pierre had all along recognized the artiste,
but it did not agree with his design to let her
see that he did. She saw, however, that the j
announcement of her name was to her ad- j
vantage, and she repeated it. ‘ Oui Messieurs,
EUsler, kijoli, et joyeuse Fanny, Fanny, Jr \
vons assure,’ added she, bursting into tears. !
‘Mademoiselle,’ resumed Pierre, after some
moments of apparently profound reflection, I
‘I have already presented before you, with I
the warmth and truth of patriotism the dread
ful penalties I should entail upon my coun
try, my good name and my person, if I as
sented to your ©scape. Yet—[a pause]—
there is one condition, now you have men- ,
tionM your name, on the performanee of <
which you shall live.’
‘Oh! Cieuxf vat is dat eonditionc? cried !
Fanny, drying her tears and almost magneti
zing Pkrrc by the intensity of her gaze.
‘Remember what l sacrifice, Modemoiselle
—the land ot my fathers—ou this -pot. too—
fame and life ’
•Rut de conditioned de conditione! I will
perform if.’
‘Say you do? then will I and these niv
comrade? sell ourselves to the devil to see
you dance the cracovienne.’
What! she who had displayed her agility
to gaping thousands, vociferating bravos! she
who had snapped her toes, as it were, in tilt
faces of the crowned beads of Europe! whose
India rubber limbs had stirred the phlegm of
the politicians of Washington, whom the mo
tion for ‘dissolution of the Union’ could not
arouse! she to dance at night and alone for
the amusement of an awkward squad of ca
dets?
‘Hacrc! pests! man Dieu. cst simpltrneutf
impossible! I cannot do it,’ said the indignant
Fanny.
•Die, then! proud, insensible and ungrateful
woman!’ answered Pierre in awful accent- 1 ,
and preparing to rr'se his piece.
•Hold!’ interrupted Fanny, who loved her
life more than her dignity, but who still hoped
to evade the disagreeable condition by a sub
terfuge. ‘I would dance, helas, with pleas
ure, mats Messieurs —rare is de orchesta, vare
is de drum, de tambour, de flute, de violin,
de tambourine! I can no dance without de
music. Parbleu! I can no do everything;
I can no dance without the music!’ The
guard-cloaks and Pierre consulted together
for a few seconds.
*Oh.’ said Pierre, at length, ‘you shall be
supplied with music—l'll whistle!’ The deg
radation was complete. ‘Xevare, nevare,
Messieurs!’ cried the indignant Fanny, im
pulsively. The guard-cloaks were dismay
ed.
‘That or death!’ croaked Pierre, making a
final effort; ‘that or death, and remember our
sacrifice, Madame!’ Ellsler considered; her
resolution failed her. ‘Ah! me, bien! I vill
dance, gentilhbmmes.’
Tlie musket? were stacked; the guard
cloaks reclined ou the grass. The moon
shone with a serene and silvery luster upon
the strange group. The dew drops sparkled
in tlieir splendor, and through the adjacent
cedars the white monument of the Polish
chieftain peered upon the scene. It was with
immense labor and only after repeated efforts
that Pierre could packer his rebellious lips to
the contracted dimensions necessary for the
production of a whistle; those elastic appen- j
dages maifesting a singular affinity towards ,
his ears. At la?t, however, he subdued his
laughing propensity sufficiently to whistle the
Cfaeovienne, atler the manner of a softened
solo ou the flute, Fanny, with a very droop
ing, willow-like air, executed the piroutte by
moonlight. The guard cloaks imitated the
pit of a theater, as well as they could. They
clapped their hands, stamped the ground,
threw up their caps, shouted their applause, |
(in whisjtera, not to awaken the officers.) and
encored every feat until Fanny's feet were
wearied out and Pierre’s lungs thoroughly i
exhausted. Fanny now motioned to retire. ‘
‘No, not yet!’ objected Pierre, breathing
hard to refresh himself. ‘We must have /><
Cochuca • we would incur the fate of Andre
to see that, and, besides, I whistle the air ad
mirably}’
The remonstrances of the danseuse wore i
overruled once more. Tlie guard cloaks |
changed their supporting elbows. Jupiter
snuffed the moon. The white monument I
peered w ith intense curiosity—the spirit of
Arnold laughed—Pierre contracted liis lips—
the melancholy Ellsler stood in act to dance, i
one foot raised like Niobe, preparing to cut
a ‘pigeon wing,” when
‘Turn out! third relief!’ the corporal of the
guard cried out at the distant guard-tent;
knocking the but of liis musket upon the floor
to awaken the slumbering guard. The two
hours of our friends liad expired. Rising has
tily and grasping their muskets from the
stack, they fled hurriedly to their deserted ‘
posts, alarmed by the apprehension of being
discovered neglecting the important duties of l
HUtiaels- Fancy was bewildered by thi[
sudden, and to her, unaccountable movement ]
on the part of her tormentors; but she had !
presence of mind enough to avail herself of
the confusion by converting the preliminary
step of the Cachuea into the first, bound to- 1
ward the hotel. Ou the way to Mr. Cozzen’s
accommodating establishment, she encoun
tered Monsieur Sylvestre coming to her re
lief at the head of a company of figurantes,
chambermaids, waiters and bootblacks, armed
1o the teeth with brooms, clubs and pickaxes, 1
and crying to the top of his voice—‘Ellsler to
the rescue! Tonnerre! Diahh! L’Enfer! |
ve vill storm the camp, be gar!’
Perhaps Miss Fannie was still offended
with Monsieur for ids precipitate retreat ear
lier in the evening, or sue might have seen
upon the stage a representation of FaWtali’.-
regiment, to wiiieh Sylvcstro’l bore a striking
resemblance, “ r a he might have doubted In
ability to ?cv.ni and carry the camp. At ■
least, she muttered with some asperity in
the finning Gascon’s ear ‘'hat they had ren
dered them<elv<‘S ridieoloij? enough already
and that he had better order a retreat back
to Mr. Oozzefs again. Sylvestre obeyed
though he protested and saere’d and bragged
a! a terrible rale about vvh.af he would have
| done if Medemois.elle Fanny had but riven
the word. i
The next daV it was ascertained that the
danseuse and her company had left West
Point before After the night ‘/aimlliad
been relieved by the new detail, a crowd ol
I cadet? were assembled in conversation, la
menting that they could not witness her per
formance, then creating such a sensation in
i the United States. Pierre here remarked,
1 very consequentially, that he and seven oth
; ers around him had seen her in the Craeovi
j enneand La Cachuea. He was answered with
! universal exclamations oi incredulity. lie
! then related the foregoing story, and the
