The prospects of the poor the coming winter are so
that several benevolent minded men have it
consideration to call a public meeting at once,to
ftftn .tt a liberal system or relief. The churches will
„ o raked to co operate, as well as all other bodies
Ast may have the means of affording relief. The Idea
Bifiwd one, and forbidding as are the sigrs of the

BtsiNf>’ at Buffalo.—For the first time in
nany years the sound of the hammer and the
w is not heard in our ship-yards. Not anew
reei has been placed on the stocks this fall,
cd scarcely a man can be seen in the various
nrie. excepting the few employed in finishing
the ferry boat for the Lake Huron Railway
Company. The usual force employed in the
wia is about fifteen hundred men. not one of
whom can be employed there the coming win
ter. In many other of the manufacturing bran
ches of business, large numbers of hands have
been discharged, with no prospect of employ
ment before spring. There are at this moment
more mechanics out of employment In Buffalo,
than at any time heretofore. —Buffalo Courier,
Mouthy.
Workingmen Discharged. —The New York
Times publishes a list of eighteen establish
■mti in that city, which have discharged in
the aggregate 1,461 mechanics and laborers, on
rcount of the financial pressure. To this it
aids 1,200 who have been discharged from the
Erie Railroad tunnel at Jersey city—making a |
I’ joiai of 2,661. It adds that the ship yards of i
ae city, that usually swarm with workmen, !
ire almost deserted.
Mn: - Resuming.—The Springfield (Mass.)
Arm of Monday, states that the Lyman Mill,
Is Holyoke, lias commenced running again, six
4ns in the week and eight hours in the day. If j
ar is such an improvement in financial mat

rely to afteot other mills in a similar way. The i
Belief will be most welcome to the thousands of
operatives that are uow out of employment.
The Irish depositors of the Savings Bank at
