What Next?
It i* stated as one of latest political on flit*
that the notorious Abolition Governor of Vir
ginia, -Tulin r .etcher, baa opeuly avowed his
;.:irpose to hoist the flag of disunion in Virginia,
should a Black Republican President be elect
id in ISfd)! He threatens to take possession
of Fort Monroe in such a case, for purposes of
defence connected with the formation of a
Southern Confederacy !
In the event mentioned, John I .etcher would
more likelvgo into the Black Republican’s Cab

coming a foe of Black Republicanism. All

Kknti-ckt.—lt is now ascertained that
there is no tie in the vote for Congress in j
the 4th District of Kentucky, as at first re
ported, but that Mr. Anderson, the Opposi
tion candidate, hits a majority of 2 vote*.
Thi- equally divides the delegation—five Op
pwition and five Democrats. It is moreover
‘foil that Mr. Harlan, the Opposition candi
date in the Ashland District, will contest
the election of Sims, the Democrat who has
received the certificate, and will be able to
di.w that he (Harlan) carried the District
by at least 200 legal votes.

Staffing Douglas.
We clip the following paragraph from tLe
Savannah News :
Mr. Douglas is said, by letter writers, to be 1
much elated at the recent Southern elections,
inasmuch as bis friends write bim from thoee
States that the Opposition gains are exclusive
ly owing to ,the sympathy w-hich is felt for his
position, aud betoken determination on the
part of many of the Southern States to support
Ins claims for the Presidency at the Charleston
Convention,
It Douglass can believe such nonsense as
this, lie is a bigger fool than we took him lor.
We would like to see a Southern man of the
‘'Opposition” in favor of Stephen. Such a
breed of politicians is not raised in these
parts. His friends in the South are all “djrmi
eiats” ol northern proclivities.
The Huntsville (Al*.) Democrat, edited by J. ‘
W. Clay, Esq., brother of United States Sena- 1
tor Clay, of that State, thus explicitly states
the conditions upon which only Alabama will
support the nominee of the Charleston Con
vention :
“Xo nominee of the Charleston Convention
can obtain our support unless the platform
adopted shall substantially recognize the c >n
atinuutionul rights of the South on the slavery
question, as laid down by the Supreme Court
in the Dred Scott decision, to-wit: T 1 at slave
ry is recognized in the constitution, and that it >
is the duty of every department ol the federal
government, C-ngressional, Judicial and Exec
utive, to guard and protect it; and unless the
antecedents of the nominee are such as to jus
tify the belief that he will be a safe custodian I
of the rights of the South under the constitu
tion.’’
Vri? The Memphis Aralanrhe says that
‘•no Democrat who has the spirit even of a
Sepoy, can read Mr. Douglas’ letter without
feeling that it is an indignity offered him
and hi> party—an attempt at dictation which i
he is bound by every principle of personal
and political independence to spurn with
contempt, and resist by every means in his
power.”

“After defining his position with refer

We give below the letter of Cel. Warren
| Akin, accepting the nomination for Gover
nor tendered him by the Opposition Conven
tion, which met in thi* city on the 10th inst.
The letter ol’ the Committee, notifying him
of his nomination, was placed in the hands
of a gentleman who is temporarily absent
j from the city. We are, consequently, unable
to furnish a ropy of that to-day:
Cadsvillx, August loth, 1859.
Gentlemen— Yours of the 11th instant,
informing me that a Convention of the party
representing the Opposition in Georgia,
which assembled in Atlanta on the 10th in
! stant, unanimously placed my name in
nomination for the office of Governor of this
State at the approaching election, has been
received.
This manifestation of confidence from so
large and intelligent a body of my fellow
citizens, is a compliment not to be slightly
regarded. even if it had been sought by me.
But when voluntarily tendered, and that,
too, not only without solicitation, but against
my known wishes—taking into consideration
all the circumstances attending it, as they
have l>een detailed to me—it imjioscs an
obligation upon me to yield to the demand
of my friends, which it is not in my heurt
to shrink however reluctantly I as
sume the position assigned me. I, therefore,
accept the nomination; and fully approve
and cordially endorse the declaration of
principles adopted by the Opposition Con
vention, held at Macon on the 20th day of
July last.
As it was known to many of the members
of the Convention, that the condition of my
heallh rendered it physically impossible for
me to canvass the State, 1 supjiose it will not
be expected of me.
For the very kind and flattering manner
in which you have communicated to me the
action of the Convention, and given expres
sion to your individual opinions, allow me
to tender you my sincere acknowledgment,
and to assure you of the deep sensibility with
which I receive this evidence of your per
sonal regard.
1 am, gentlemen,
Very respectfully.
Your obedipnt servant,
WARREN AKIN.

A Story and it* Application. .
OneJas. I*. Carmichael, an independ
i ent candidate for the Legislature, up in
Coweta county, in a late speech before
the sovereigns, told the following anec
dote, (says the Newnan Blade,) and ap
plied it to the action of the Democratic
Convention that endorsed the “ability
and patriotism” of old Buck !
“Well, gentlemen, said he, let me tell
you a story about a young man and his
sweetheart, which happened sometime
ago. The young chap was mightily in
love with the gal, and one Sunday he
went home with her. \\ hm dinner come
on, a right smart chance of the neighbors
had called in, and were, of course, invi
ted to eat with the family. Among
other things on the table was a large
dish of bacon and collards, from which
the old lady helped her gal s beau very
liberally. As Lad luck would have it,
the first cut the love sick youngster made
in his collards, up turned a tremendous
long, fat worm. Well, gentlemen this
I sight acted like death in the pot upon his
appetite, and how to hide the worm
from the gaze of the others was the ques
tion. His first thought was to hook it
up with his fork and drag it to one side
of his plate; but then, thought he, they
will all discover it, and it will give them
a bad relish for their dinner. And be
sides it will make my sweetheart so
shamed that if 1 attempt to speak to her
after dinner she w ill be sure 1 want to
say something about the worm, and will
keep away from me. He thought to him
self that there was but one way by
which his sweetheart could be saved from
shame and the party from disgorging
their dinners, and that was to roll the
tarnal, nasty worm up in some of the
colard leavs and swallow it. And sure
enough he did.
Now, gentlemen, said our speaker,
I this is just the way our June Guberna
torial Convention did with Old Buck, as
the oniy chance to save their dear sweet
heart, Miss Parly, from shame and dis
grace. Jackson rolled old Buck in the
colard leaves of ‘ability and patriotism,’
and Seward, who had a strong Yankee
stomach, moved the crowd shouid swal
low it —Old Buck Administration and
the second resolution—and down the
throats of all it went, save thirty four
weak stomached chaps who gagged at
the winding sheet, ‘ability and patriot
ism.”

DAIsY’S
AROMATIC VALLEY
WHISKY.
IN thi age of adulterated ard deleterious Liquors, it is a
source of satisfaction to be able to introduce to public o
ttoe the aliove article—an article of unquestioned purity, and
possessing no qualittesfxccpt such as have the most favorable
influence on the human constitution.
A few rods of scil on the tanks of the Rhine p-oduecs the
grape which will flourish no where else, from whose juice pro
ceeds,he ••JohannisocTg,” the choicest w ine tn the world.
A few acres of land in Cuba produces a Tobacco, tne flavor
and qualitv of which, when manufactured into again, are in
comparable superior to that of the product of any other soil.
And a narrow strip of laud In the Parish of Natclittochee, in
Louisiana, lias long supplied the world with a super-excellent
article ot Snuff, from such Tobacco as cannot be induced lo
grow elsewhere. . ~ .
In like manner It bas Ic-nzbeen known that a limited terri
tory, If ing In thu valley of the Monongahcla river, exclusive
ly brings forth a Rye of pro erties so marked ar.d peculiar, hat
its distillation produces a Whisky of such superlative charac
ter as places it beyond rivalry.
By a process recently dis -overed, and now known only to
my manufacturer, tbe grair from the choicest spot of this fa
vored locality is made to yield the
AROMATIC VALLEY WHISKY,
with which no other can stand an Ir. slant's comparison.
1 have no apprehension o! being accused f publishing un
warrantable, or even exaggerated encomiums, to any who will
first subject my Whisky ,<> test.
It is now the standard article at all the first el ass Hotels and
Clubs in tbe city of New Yura, and wherever it ia introduced
it at once assumes its leading position, is
AWARDED TyE PALM OF SUPERIORITY’,
and thedemsnd for it becomes* thing established.
Its medn inal properties are such, that while its immediate
effects are pleasant and grattful.it exercises the happiest per
maiientinfluence upon the ■■onstitution
I have analyzed a f ample of “Daly’s Aroma'ic Valley Whis
ky,” and find it to be a pure article, ot line flavor, and with
