“We regret t< tsee that this honorable gen- ;

manifests a determination to adhere to his
party affiliation, “right or wrong.” He j
cannot afford to lo<o his position, in the :

widely as the poles are asunder. We think, j
therefore, that the Senator tit.-ds that his

for his party ticket, generally. Very well 1 ;

Everybody has heard of the Gavoso House !
at Memphis, Tenn., now under charge of a
gallant Carolinian, 1). Cockrell, Esq., but j
everybody dots not know what a splendid
establishm. nt the Gavoso is. We will briefly
give its leading features:
The building is four stories high, and cov
ers an tu re of ground, having a front on t>e
Missi-dppi Bivvr of 22ft feet, and capable ot ,
accommodating 800 guests at one time. Its
cost was about a quarter of a million of dol
lars. The House is warmed “by steam from
a large, high pressure engine in rear of the j
building, some 10,000 leet ol pipe being used ■
for the purpose. Steam i- also used in the ,
culinary dpurtmeut—soups, meats, and
vegetables being cooked and kept wrm by
the process. Steam is also the presiding gc
niu- <>f the wash room. A machine ca’lt-d
th*. Hydro Extra do ■* : s u?ed for drying the
clothes as they come from the large -ft ;nt
washing machine, doing the work of 25 j
b-inds by the ordinary process. S -mo 18tMi
pieces can be washed, dried and ironed in i
one l.our—taking only six bunds to do the
work of CO, by the hand operation. The j
House lias its own gas works with a gasom
eter capable of holding 10,000 cubic feet ot j
ga-, supplying 2.C00 burners, giving an
amount of illumination for one night equal
to 20,0U0 candles. Also a ten-horse'steam
engine at the river, opposite the house, to
supply the cisterns of th** house, whh water,
through 12<!) feet of main pipe inch di
ameter. All the other appointments of ,he
Hotel are of corresponding ebaraet* r, and
every attention is paid bv Col. Cockrell and
his polite assistants to make their guests feel .
r home ill this ptilace of a Hotel. To the I
proprietor and hi*Treasurer. Geo. T. Curtis, !

The above appears in the Atlanta Intelli

he now holds. Were our lamented friend
f. P. Stubbs, living, he would be the first to

A Timely Warning.
The CoiUmhUs Enquirer, ot Fnuay last, ;

1 ••Electioneering,” which, as the almanac |
makers say. is adapted to any meridian. The |
writer learns, from good authority, that ]
••certain candidates in that vicinity are in !
the habit of visiting, in certain quarters
what they please to term ‘bails,’ for the pur
nose of electioneering—when the oath which
members of the Legislature are required to
take, forbids that they should gain their
election by any such means. This mode ol
i electioneering is wrong, and should be stop
ped, and if the better portion of the coin- j
inanity- were to discountenance it, by not
v ting f r men who resorted to such an abom
inable way of s% curing their election, it
would be stopped. But this is not all—
what is it they call ‘balls ?” \\ by, nothing
more nor le-s than a gathering together of
low persons at some house of ill-fame, where
the candidates buy whiskey, treat the crowd,
mid dance with the females who reside at
these houses.”
The same sort of electioneering has been
m vogue in this vicinity and will probably
prevail again, the present week, if we haw
not mistaken tha ‘signs of the times.” One
of the Democratic candidates, we learn, has
lately “heeled himself’ with SS,tXK), to be us
ed for “electioneering” purposes, and as high
as 82<* apiece i- offered for a vote. It may
be well then to j übiish tht* oath required of

Changes! Changes!!
The State Press is exceedingly restive uu
. der Warren Akin’s declaration, that “a'l
naturalized citizens should receive the pro
tection of our Government from foreign
despots, to the sinking of the last ship and
the fall of the last soldier,” and says that
• this is a decided change of opinion, on the
i part of the Opposition. Not so! The Ame
rican party never denied to any foreigner
any of the rights claimed for the native-born,
after the former had taken the oath of alle
• ‘jiancc to this Government. The object ol
the American organization was to extend the
period of naturalization, to a longer period
than is now required—but when once a for
eigner became a citizen, under existing laws,
he has been allowed, freely, all the privileges
and benefits belonging to anv other citizen.
Tnere has, then, been no change, whatever,
in the views of our party on this subject.
The State Press will find it difficult to
show that Gov. Bri.w-n is a friend to the
Catholic foreigner, when he recommended
large appropriations to three Protestant
Colleges, at the expense of all other denom
inations. Let all of our Catholic fellow
citizens read the follow ing communication,
from one of tlieir number to the Allania

if they- can;

PROSPECTUS
OF THE
BANNER OF LOVE.
I propose to publish, in the city of Macon, a week
ly family anil religious paper, of the alarve title. The
religious department will Ire devoted to tlie dissemi
nation of the doctrines of Christianity as understood
by those who believe that - God is love,” and that all
Ins attributes centre in this essential and all-absorb
ing principle of his nature; and who lx lit ve further
that, actuated by this ruling principle, tlie dispensa
tions of the divine economy will Ih- so carried out as
to eventuate in the reconciliation of all things to
God, and the subjection of all intelligences to the
reign ol'love. In the advocacy and defence of the
peculiar features of this system of faith, the effort
shall l>e to manifest, so far as human frailty will per
mit. upon all occasions, that Christian chanty which
-is not easily provoked.” and which “hopeth all
things, believeth all things, endurethall tilings.'’
The design in conducting the Miscellaneous de
partment will be to till it with such matter as shall
serve to amuse and Instruct the general reader,
while it shall, at the same time, contribute to tlie
maintenance of an elevated standard of morality.
The pat>er will abo contain a News departme’nt. in
which will alv •>- found a carefully prepared sum
mary of the general news of the day, state of the
markets. Ac.
A specimen number will lie issued in a few days,
and it is hoped thai tire friends of liberal Christiani
ty will take an interest in procuring subscribers for
the same, and forward names immediately.
The terms of subscription wil die two dollars a year
in advance.
The size of the paper will lx- the same as the Daily
Georgia I'itizen.
AH communications in relation to this subject may
be addressed to mo. at Macon, care of L. F. W. \n
