Diamond Cut Diamond.
The following good story i told
I'V the New \ ork correspondent of
the Boston Journal.
A little incident took place in New
York a short time since that I will
put in this place. We have a noted
gentleman in New York, whom i
will call T. He is a member of one
of the New York clubs. Opposite
to him was another person, who one
evening sported an elegant diamond
ring. It dazzled T. He wanted it;
hut the owner seemed to care little
to part with it. Yielding at last to
the importunity of TANARUS., the ring was
sold for the sum of SOOO. It passed
to T. amid the itterings and sup
pressed mirth of the crowd, which
did not escape the quick ear of T.
lie knew that both the ring and the
purchaser were sold. T. said noth
ing. The next day lie called upon a
jeweler, and learned that the ring was
paste, and was worth about $25. He
called for some real diamonds, and
among them found one not unlike
his ring of paste. T. made a bar
gain with the jeweler for the use
of the real diamond. He pledged
SI2OO, the price of the diamond. He
gave SIOO for its use fora time. He
had the paste removed from the set
ting ami the real diamond put in its
stead. Thus armed, he appeared
among his associates at might,
flourished his ring, and seemed to he
in high glee, to the astonishment of
his chums, who believed he had been
sold.
But the advantage was with T.
He talked about ‘foolandhis money,’
etc. —said that if any gentleman pre
sent had a SI2OO ring that he wished
to sell for SOOO, T. knew where a
a purchaser could he found. Bets
were freely promised that the dia
mond was not real. They were ac
cepted. One man bet SIOOO ; so did
others ; and two bet SSOO each ; and
all were taken by T. Umpires were
chosen, the money and the ring put
into their hands, the test applied,
and all said the stone was a diamond
of the first water, and was worth not
less than SI2OO. T. quietly put the
S3OOO in his pocket and went his ,
way. He carried the diamond back,
recalled his sl2oo,paid for the use of
the stone, and with the paste ring in
his hand, went back to theClubrat
night. The man who had sold the
ring was at the Club, waiting, for he
wanted to regain the ring. “lie had
sold it for fun. He knew all the
time it was a real diamond. He nev
er had any false jewels. He could
tell a real diamond at any time, by
its peculiar light. He would not do
so mean a thing as to cheat his old,
dear friend T. And he knew that
T. would let him have the ring back.
But T. was stubborn ; said that the
seller was a cheat, and now that he
saw the value of the ring, wouldn’t
undo what he hud done. At length
T. agreed to restore the ring on the
payment of ssoo, which was joyful
ly paid.- But the matter came out,
and all parties came to the conclu
sion that when “diamond is to cut
diamond,’ sonic more pliable, and
one less sharp than TANARUS., will be se
lected for the operation.
An Amusing Incident.
One of the most interesting events j
which transpired at the recent Nation
al Agiicultural Fair, held at Chica
go, is described by a correspondent as !
follows:
“At this point of the proceedings a
basket was brought forth from the mys
terious labrynth of crinoline that occu
pied a large portion of the Judge’s stand,
and held up in sight of the crowd. It j
contained three small specimens of hu- ■
manity, born at the same birth, tix
months of age, and all doing well. Pres
ident Tilgham, after exhibiting the
youngsters to the crowd, held up their
silver spoons in his hand, and spoke as
follows:
Fellow citizens of the United States of
America, ladies and gentlemen—married
and single : We appear before you on
this occasion to award a premium of a
most interesting character. No country
can be great without population ; and
how can any country be so great as this,
where we improve on the old fashioned
plan of one at a time. Your speaker after
having served his country by an addi
tion of eight in single numbers, conclud
ed his labors with two at a time. lie
is proud to welcome all who have done
likewise.
But although we have considered our
selves some pumpkins, we are all small
potatoes, compared with Mrs. Teresa
I nderstock, the mother of these trip
lets.
If there has been any doubt about this
being the greatest agricultural fair ever
held in the country, this settles the ques
tion. Never was there an occasion like
this before where thre9 living and health
ful babies were presented to the
ence by a member of the official board,
I might descant for any length of time, ,
upon such a prolific theme, but I will
conclude by awarding on behalf of the
United States ‘Agricultural Society, three
spoons to John, Joseph and William Un
derstock, the infant brothers in the bas
ket before you. Go thou and do like
wise.
The audience applauded, the band
played “Y ankee Doodle,” and the moth
er of the babies, assisted by a couple of
her countrymen, carried the basket of
babies around in the crowd for inspec
tion, and to receive pecuniary contribu
tions. Several hundred dollars in mon
ey was given.
The children are natives of Illinois,
torn of German parents, who are of
course very poor. (People in easy cir
cumstances arc seldom endowed with
blessings of this kind in such absurd
abundance.) I pon arriving at the gates
ot the bair Grounds, the mother had
not money enough to purchase a ticket
of admission; but a noble-hearted lady,
Mrs. Bernard, conceiving the happy idea
of both assisting the mother and afford
ing a fund for entertainment for the vis
itors, procured the admission of the
mother and her numerous offspring.
A writer iu Frazer’s Hagazine
says that the father of Dr. Chalmers
carefully locked up the weekly let
ters he received from his son. By
the time a number of letters had ac
cumulated, his son came to pay him
a visit, and then he broke all the
seals and had the writer of the let
ters read to him.
“Old men’s lives are length
ened shadows; their evening sun falls
coldly on the earth, but the shadows
all point to the morning. 1 ’
Jlf running after women boa

be necessary is for the women to stop
running away from the men.
Advertising for a Wife.
Mr. Fondlove conceives some very
romantic notions now and then, and
having no regular business to see
after, he amuses himself by putting
}]is romantic notions into practice. —
He was married to an estimable lady,
of wealth and beauty six or eight
years ago, but for the ‘fun of the
thing’ he took it into his head to ad
vertise for a wife. He accordingly
put a modest card into one of the
city papers, and received a score or
more of communications in reply.—
It was a capital joke, and a couple
of weeks were spent in going through
the routine of a personal interview
with each tiiir respondent. There
was one who avoided an actual meet
ing, but with well penned epistles,
almost infatuated Mr. Fondlove. He
1 suddenly became very literary and
sentimental, and occupied most of
his time in writing letters to his be
witching incognito, whose evident
wit and talent eclipsed everything.
Indeed, Mr. Fondlove was complete
ly carried away with the fair writer,
and really neglected Mrs. Fondlove
in his ardor lor the pleasure of men
tal communion with the new ideal of
his too susceptible heart. Already
he began to compare the merits of'l
the unknown with those of Mrs.
Fondlove, and half cursed himself
to think that he should ever have
married such a woman.
‘Oh, what a fool I have been,’ he
exclaimed, ‘Here at last I have the
very woman of my heart, and to
think that I am already married.—
Oh! its enough to madden any
one.’
Mr. Fondlove at last declared that
he could not live without his fair en
slaver, and after long entreaty she
finally consented to an interview,but
upon condition that she should be
permitted to remain veiled while in 1
his presence. To this lie assented—
fearful lie should not see her at all if
lie refused.
The momentous hour at last ar
rived, and with a thumping heart, j
and an entire new suit of clothes and
the costliest perfume in his handker
chief and hair, Mr. Fondlove re
paired to the appointed place and
found the object of his love already
there. The interview was mutually
interesting, and but for the odious
veil, Mr. Fondlove would have been
perfectly happy. However, in his
ardor, he confessed himself ‘cursed’
with an uncongenial wife, whom lie
never did and never could love. He
would instantly apply to the Legis
lature for a divorce, and throw him
self at the feet of the uncovered an
gel. She seemed to dislike the idea
of his marriage and the project ofj
getting a divorce, but lie grew sovio
leut, and took so many additional
oaths of tliis unalterable resolution
and pure devotion, that in pity she
yielded to bis earnest prayers todis.
close her features.
‘I fear you will be disappointed,*!
said she. hesitating.
‘lmpossible!’ lie cried, full of impa- \
tience. ‘I will love you forever!’
‘But your wife! You may find!
that her face is equal to mine. You !
may perchance think better of your
resolution and return to her. J al
most wish I had not promised you.’
‘Nav, but I must see your face,’
persisted Mr. Fondlove.
‘Then pledge me your sacred word
that you will be true to me lienee
forth from this hour until death!’
she solemnly said.
‘I swear it!’ gasped Mr. Fondlove. ;
A simple movement of her hand j
threw back the veil, and Mr. Fond- i
love was dumbfounded at beholding
the face of his own wife. Both start
ed to their feet, and Mr. Fondlove i
appeared to be on the verge of in- J
stant flight to escape the terrible
consequences of the dilemma, but 1
Mrs. Fondlove caught him by the j
arm, and conducted him home,where
the matter was amicably settled. —
Mr. Fondlove thinks his wife more ,
lovely than when he first courted ;
her, and she never knew how irre
sistible lie really was until adven
ture gave her a chance to tost him.
‘But how did you come to answer 1
my advertisement V asked Mr. Fond
love.
‘Why, I saw you writingit out the j
day before. I peeped over your
shoulder and read it. The next morn
ing, sure enough, there it was among j
the ‘Matrimonials.’ I thought two
could play at the game, and so 1 re- !
plied according to the directions.’
Mr. and Mrs. Fondlove have gone !
to the seaside to enjoy their second j
‘honey moon.’— Literary Gazette.
An amusing story, says a Toledo,
Ohio, correspondent of the Knickerbock
er, is told of the acute sense of smell of !
a tobacconist of our city. lie, together
with his clerk, was examining some to
bacco submitted for hisjnspection. Af
ter carefully inhaling the flavor by
three or four protracted sniffs, he ex
l claimed to his clerk ; “John, can’t you
smell old leather in the tobacco ?” John
presented it to bis olfactories, and
j “(houghs he could.” The “chief’ then I
smelled again, and declared that he
could also detect a very slight flavor of
maple sugar. This last aroma John j
pronouced beyond his powers. Sam
ples of leaf tobacco, you know, are taken
from each end of the hogshead, and also
from Ihe centre. The samples examined
were from the ends. On taking a saim
pie from the middle, there was found an
old boot heel, full of maple pegs! Judg
ment on “tobakker” from this quarter is
now regarded as final!
Floating Wit.
It ; s feared that the “hops”at the
watering places are not unfrequent
ly used for brewing evil.
One of the broadest hints to pop
the question which it is possible for
a young lady to give a young gentle
man, is to declare to him her inten
tion of never marrying.
A young lady in the interior thinks
of going to California to get mar
ried, as she has been told that in that
j country the men folks “rock the
: cradle.”
It is complained of Shakspeare,
that he unnecessarily murdered Ham
let. But he has been paid for it.
A great many* Hamlets have mur
dered Shakspeare.
1 he Saturday Press is generally
regarded as a “smart” paper for one
so young. 1 lie latest product of its
precoeionsness is the following:
“Got any ice at your end of the
table, Bill '. ’ No; but I’ve got the
next thing to it.” “What's that ?”
“A severe cold.”
“I will give you my head !” ex
claimed a person to Mostesquien, “if
every word of the story I have rela
ted is not true.” “I accept your of
’ j fer,” said the President. “Presents
of small value strengthen the bonds
1 of friendship, and should never be
f rinsed.”

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, in which we haw ‘
bored to produc e the most effectual alterat *
that can be made. It is a concentrated re!'.’
of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined w,t„ (l
substances of still greater alterative potior!’
to afford an effective antidote for the di-, *
Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is belreT!
that such a remedy is wanted hv those ui
suffer from Strumous complaints, and thu* °
which will accomplish their cure must v-n *
of immense service to this large class <[,,!
afflicted fellow-citizens. llow completely ths
compound will do it has been proven by
iment on many of the w orst cases to be 1 , un ß
of the following complaints:
, Scrofula and Scuofilous CoMr;.vi NTi
. Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases,
Pimpi.es, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Khei*
! Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Af!
! FECTIONS, MEKCtntIAL DfSEASE, DroPST, Xj , !
raloia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, Dts
pepsia and Indigestion, Ehtsipelas, lb N j
or St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the wb k
class of complaints arising from Impcritt ui
the Blood.
This compound will be found a great pro.
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel the foul humors which fester • T the
I blood at that season of the year. By th.t.me!
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, br
the aid of tins remedy, spare themselves rmn;
the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcimus
sores, through wiiich the system will strive to
rid itself at corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
I by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
i bursting through the skin in pimples,
or sores; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will till
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
i longer, lor cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
j pabulum of life disordered, there can no
lasting health. Sooner or later something
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
, life is disordered or overtlirown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
1 reputation, of accomplishing these ends. But
the world Ims been egregiously deceived bv
preparations of it, partly because the drus
alone has not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
i pretending to be concentrated extracts of it,
; contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla,
1 or any thing else.
During late’years the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Host
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sar.-p.
rilla, but often no curative properties whatev
er. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment
has follow ed the use of the various extract* of
Sarsaparilla wiiich flood the market, until the
, name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
| we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
I to supplv such a remedy as shall rescue the
i name from the load of obloquy which roti
| upon it. And we tliink we have ground t
j believing it has virtues which arc irresistible
j by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intend-
Jed to cure. 11l order to secure their complete
! eradication from the.system, the remedy slioc'4
be judiciously taken according to directions on
< the bottle.
