Mesmerism and Matrimony ;
OR, SCIENCE X'KRSI’S WIDOW.
.Martin Speed was a bachelor. He
had backed and filled, and hesitated
and doubted about entering upon the
“blissful state of matrimony/ until the
fire of youthful passion was all spent, and
matrimony had become a problem to
him as dry and formal as one in old
W alsh’s arithmetic; to be ciphered out
for an answer as much as that proposi
tion about carrying the fox, goose, and
bag of corn across the creek, that every
body “problemly” remembers. Being
a phrenologist, lie left the province of
hearts altogether, and went to examining
heads, to ascertain by crardological de
velopments a woman’s fitness for the po
sition of a wife to Martin Speed, Esq.,
as letters came addressed to him at the
Speedwell post oftiee. The town of
Speedwell was namoJ for an ancestor of
his, and boasted of several thousands of
inhabitants; and us it was a factory
place, it had a goodly share of good look
ing marriageable girls.
Martin studied Combe, and Spurze
heim, and Gall, and grew bitter as disap
pointment saw him enter his forty-first
year a bachelor. He looked back on
the past, and saw the chances he had
neglected, and the happiness of those
who had started with him, and were now
portly people, the heads and fronts of
families; and the delicate damsels he
had slighted, respected mothers in Isra
el, and exemplary and amiable wives,
lie sought every opportunity for exam
ining the heads of such as w ould submit
themselves to his hand with a hope of
catching the bachelor; for they knew his
w eakness, and he was well-to-do, and au
eligible match. But in vain he looked
for perfection. The bumps would not
be arranged as he w ished them. If he
took a liking to a pretty face, phrenology
impertinently gave it the lie straight, and
he at once avoided it.
It was at this juncture that a biologi
cal lecturer—a grave professor in that
science—carne to Speedwell and gave a
series of exhibitions. These Mart in un
attended, and biology at once became an
“intensity” with him—a “new emotion. 7
He attended all the exhibitions; saw men
personate roosters and crow ; hens and
scratch ; shiver with cold or burn with
heat, at the will of the operator; saw a
miser endeavor to clutch an eagle held
out to him while under the influence of
the wonderful spell, and the tongue of
a woman stilled who for twenty years
had beeu the pest ot Speedwell by her
loquacity.
This put the mind of Martin on anew
track. He sold his old phrenological
works, and devoted himself to the study
of the wonderful seieneee through which
such marvels were performed. The
professor w as a fine teacher, and Martin
placed himself under bis tuition. He
succeeded admirably. In a short time
he surpassed his instructor, and had more
than his powers in influencing the sus
ceptible among his weak brethren and
sisters.
He formed a resolution to himself
that through ibis means he would gain a
wife. Could he find one that his science
could control—one that at a glance he
could transfix, like the man who was
stopped by the mesmerizer half way
down, as he was falling from the roof of
a house—he would marry her; for the
reason, dear reader, that Martin had not
married was, that he had heard of wives
wearing the authority over their
lords, and he was a timid man. In this
new science he saw security, and sedu
lously sought for one of the right de
scription. At every party where he
was invited, at every knot of factory
girls in w hich he mingled in the summer
evenings, lie tried his art, but without
success At last, when on the point of
despairing, accident j_ave what he had
failed of obtaining by earnest seeking.
A widow—dangerous to b&cheloric
peace, as edged tools are to the careless
hands of the inexperienced —came to the
village on a visit. The weeds had not
been removed that marked her bereave
ment, and the merest touch of melan
choly rested on her brow; but her eye
was laughing, and a sweet curl strayed
away and lay like a chiseled eddy upon
the marble of her cheek. She had a
jew el on* her hand, and the black dress
she wore was cut judiciously—the mil
liner that cut it had been a widow her
self, and knew how to manage such mat
ters —showing a beautiful w hite shoul
der, and revealing a bust of rare loveli
ness.
Martin met the widow at the residence
of a friend, and liked her. lie had nev
er seen so prepossessing a woman, he
thought But she had buried one hus
band. aud that was rather a drawback.
One visit ltd to another, the liking still
increasing, until be broached the subject
of biology, with a wish fervently felt
that this might be the woman he sought.
She was fully acquainted with it, and,
in answer to his question if she was sus
ceptible to its influence, she replied that
she didn’t know’, but was willing to have
the fact tested. What a position for
Martin! Seated by her side on a sofa,
with her hand laid in bis, her rich dark
eyes resting upon his with a look equal
to that which the widow Wadtnan pour
ed into those of the unsuspecting Toby
in the stillness of a summer evening!
But science held him secure, and his
nerves were calm as the summer day of
that evening. By-and-by the beautiful
lids drooped, the head bent gently for
ward, and the widow, with a sweet smile
upon her lips, lay fa-d asleep. Martin
could have shouted “Eureka,” in his de
light at the discovery. Now his pulse
quiekemd, aud he stooped to kiss the
lips that lay unresisting before him; bat
he didn’t. By the exercise of his power
he aw aliened her, and .'he was much sur
prised at being caught napping, and
blushed at the strangeness of it; and
blushed more when Martin told her how
he had been tempted, and how’gloriously
he had result <]; and laughed a little
when she slappod his cheek w ith h*w fin
gers as he took pay from the widow’s
lips for his self denial, and went hom ■*
halt crazy with joy a t his new-found
more like a hoy of nineteen
than a matured centleman n f forty.
Every night found him a vW,tor at the
widow sand every night thesucecsofthe
science w r as proved, until by a mere look
or a wave of the hand I he beautiful will
ow became a subject to his w ill, and he
became at the same time a subject to
hers. She was such a splendid eieature,
too! ou would not find in a long
journey another fairer, or more intelli
gent, or more virtuous. The question
might be asked, which magneti'in was
the most pleasant or most powerful, his
or hers. But he thought onlv of his
own, not deeming that he was in a spell
more powerful, that was irrevocably
binding him. What could an old bache
lor know of such a thing?
This state of things grew to a crisis at
last, and Martin formally proposed to
the widow that the two should he made
one by the transmutation * f the church.
1o this she assented; and it was an
nouneed soon alter, to the astonishment
oi all, that Martin Speed Lad married
the w idow Goode. The punster of the
village n.ad -a notable pun about Good-
L Speed, at which people laughed very j
much; and the editor f one of the pa
pers, who was a very funny man, put it
in print.
It happened, shortly after tin marr-
that they had a famous party, and
some of ilie gue-ts bantered Martin about
his marriage, upon w hich he told them
of the manner it came about. They
w ere a little incredulous, and he volun
teered to give them some specimens of
his remarkable power over his wife.
She was in another room attending to
some female friends, when he called her
to him. She came obediently, and he
asked li**r to sit down, which she did.
lie took her hand and looked into her
eyes, to put her to sleep. Her eyes
were wide open, and a lurking spirit of
mischief looked out 1 1 them broadly into
his. He waved his hands b fore them,
hut they remained persistently open,
lie bent the force of Ids will to their
subjugation, hut it w as of no use.
“Mr. Speed,” said she, laughing, “I
don’t believe the magnetism of the hus
band is equal to that of the lover; or.
perhaps, science and matrimony arc at
war.”
She said this in a manner to aw aken a
strong susp : eion in his mind that she had
| humbugged him, and had never been
put to sleep at all. His ii lends—as
friends will when they fancy a poor fel
low has got into a hobble—laughed at
him, aud told the story all round the 1
village. For months he was an object
of sport to everybody. People would
make passes over each other as he pass
ed, aud women would shut their eyes
and look knowing. But, whether hits
power had gone or not, hers remained;
and he cared not a fig for their laughing,
for lie was happy in the beautiful spell
of a flection which shf threw over him,
that bound hitu as a chain of flowers.
The attempt to close her eyes was never
repealed, for he was too g'ad to see
ilmni pc*n to wish to lose s’ght of them.
Life with Speed sped well, and Martin
became a lather in time. lie never re
gretted the expedient he adopted to gel \
his wife though he never could make out ]
exactly whether she humbugged him or

! Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, in which we have ]
| bored to produce the most effectual alterative
that can be made. It is a concentrated :;triut
of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined wit,, otl r
substances of still greater alterative power w
to afford an effective antidote for the disease
Sarsaparilla is reputed to enre. It is believiti
■ that such a remedy is wanted by those who
! suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one
! which will accomplish their cure must prove
of immense service to this large class of our
afflicted fcllow-citizcns. How completely this
compound will do it ha* been proven by exper
iment on many of the worst cases to lie found
of the following complaints:
Scrofula and Scrofulous Compiaint*
Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases, Uui rs
I’ivples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Kheuji’
j Scald Head, Syphilis amt Syphilitic Af
fections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Xfx
raloia or Tic Douuurkux, Debility, Dys
pepsia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Bust
or St. Anthony's Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints arising from Impurity of
the Blood.
This compound will be found a great pro.
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel the foul humors which fester the
blood at that season of the year. By th Lmc
lv expulsion of them many rankliug dinirtlers
are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from
/he endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
bursting through the skin in pimples, eruption*,
or sores; cleanse it when you iind it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can no
lasting health. Sooner or later something
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
reputation, of accomplishing these ends. But
the worid has been egregiously deceived by
preparations of it, partly because the drug
alone has not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
pretending to be concentrated extracts of it,
contain but Little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla,
or any thing else.
During late years the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar Most
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, but often no curative properties whatev
er. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment
has followed the use of the various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until tin
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound Sar.-aparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the load of obloquy which rests
upon it. And we think we have ground for
believing it has virtues which are irresistible
i by the ordinary run of the disease* it is intend
ied to cure. In order to secure their complete
eradication from the system, the remedy should
be judiciously taken according to directions on
i the bottle.
