Southern Manufacture*.
In one respect, our Georgia ex
changes are interesting, beyond any
others that come to ns from our sis
ter States of the South, to read.
Scarcely a day passes but they bring
us something that reminds us of
what that great “Empire” is doing
or promises to do in the way of
building up or encouraging home
manufactures. Now it i3 anew lo
comotive from the great manufacto
ry at Savannah, anew car from the
same establishment or those of Ma
con and Atlanta, new iron from the
rolling mills of Cherokee, new flour
from the well known mills of Colum
bus and Augusta, new cotton and
woolen fabrics from flourishing fae
tories in nearly ever}* portion of the
State. Almost daily we notice some
thing that reminds us of the rapid
strides this great commonwealth is
making towards true independence.
And the same may be said of j>or
tions of the adjoining States of Caro
lina, Alabama and Tennessee. The
paper mills of the tirst named, we
believe, have for some time past
been supplying not only the adjoin
ing countrj', but a number of the
best conducted journals of the North;
our friends of Memphis are equally
busy in supplying with whatever
they need a large and rapidly devel
oping country, that naturally looks
to them for supplies while one not
very distant neighbors of Alabama
have of late waked up to the im
porance of developing the rich min
eral resources of that growing State.
Everywhere around us we already
begin to see evidences that we are
about entering upon anew order of
things in the South.
Heretofore, or at least till within
a few years, the Southern States
have only been known as agricultur
al States, producing cotton, corn,
rice, wheat and sugar in abundunce,
but essentially dependent upon the
North or foreign imports fur most
articles of common manufacture
even. A few years more and we
firmly believe we shall in this respect
as in our great agricultural staples,
be exporters also—we are so in the
articles of flour, cotton goods and
paper, as before mentioned already—
or at least we shall cease to be de
pendent upon others.
And certainly there is no reason
why this should not be the case.—
We have the water power, the raw
material of every kind on hand, and
a climate far more genial than any
the great manufacturing States the
North can boast, in which to work
it up. How then can we fail ulti
mately when our energies shall have
been turned in that direction, to pro
duce a better article and at less
expense than our rivals ?
A few days since, we had occasion
to speak of the comparative costs of
four Government steamers of nearly
equal tonnage, built two of them at
the South and two at the North, and
found that the difference was up
wards of 875,000 in favor of the for
mer. And what is true of ship buil
ding must be equally true of cotton
and woolen and iron manufactures,
or whatever may be carried on in
the South.
Cotton manufactures in particular
should be the object of our earnest
consideration. What could contril*-
ute more to our wealth and indepen
dence, or in what enterprise could
our surplus capital be better employ
cd ? It would be years, doubtless,
before we were able to compete with
older and more skillful manufacturers
in the production of the finer fabrics;
but we could at least, in every South
ern State, as the Georgians have for
years now been doing, supply our
selves with articles of home and
common use, while in the meantime
we laid tho foundation for greater
things. Everything is at hand, the
raw material, the motive power, a
climate unsurpassed, and our success
could not be a matter of doubt. A
few years would find us as indepen
dent of the world as we are now de
pendent upon it.
Manufacturers in iron, also, are
worthy of our earliest and warmest
encouragement. Nothing could con
tribute more to our independence as
a people, and nothing more to our
convenience and indirectly to our
wealth. How vast, indeed, would
have been the saving, the last ten
years, in Georgia, Alabama and Ten
nessee, for instance, had the rich iron
mines of those States been develop
ed and made to contribute the single
article of railroad iron alone, still
for the most part imported from
abroad. We say for the most part,
because, though late, we sec the
Georgians and Alabamians are be
ginning to think they can manufac
ture their own flour, and cottons,
and woolens, and as good an article
or better and more durable than can
be made for them.
This subject of home manufactures •
is not, indeed, often enough pressed
upon our people, nor with sufli
eient earnestness and warmth.—
We arc too prone to forget, in the
unparalleled productiveness of our
noil, and the annual returns it is sure
to make, that wc have other and
equally inexhaustible sources of
wealth. We are prone to forget,
and daily need reminding that, with
all our seeming prosperity, we of
the Southern States as yet lack one
great element of national greatness
and independence, and that it can
only be supplied by building up and
patronizing home manufactures—
manufactures in cotton, manufac
tures in iron, manfacturcs in every
thing that we produce; and what do
we not produce in the South ?

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, in which w e her. ,
bored to produce the most effectual alto/,*
(hat can be made. It is a concentrated
of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined wit
substance* of still greater alterative now *
to afford an effective antidote for thedi ** “
Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It i s
j that such a remedy i? wanted bv tho- Ti
suffer Irom Strumous complaints, and that
I “'bich will accomplish their cure must ‘, ri ‘
of immense service to this large class
atflicted fellow-citizens. How completelv th*’
compound will do it has been proven by cxt>e7
iment on many of the worst cases to’be f o m, d
ot the following complaints: 8
Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints
Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases, Ulceus’
Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Bhki m
| Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Vt
sections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Nec
raloia or Tic Douloureux, Debility, I) vs ’
pepsia and Indigestion, Erysipelas’ Kosi
or St. Anthony's Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints arising from Impurity 0
the Blood.
This compound will be found a great p r
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel the foul humors which fester ; t the
blood at that season of the year. By th„ tane
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, hv
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves frohi
the endurance ol’ foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurity
bursting through, the skin ih pimples, eruption,,
or sores; cleanse it when you find it is ob.
structed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and li T *
longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can no
lasting health.’ Sooner or later somethin?
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
reputation, of accomplishing these ends. But
the world has been egregiously deceived bv
preparations of it, partly because the dm?
alone has not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
pretending to be concentrated extracts of it,
contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilk,
or any thing else.
During late years the public have been mis.
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quan
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. M
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, but often no curative properties whiter,
er. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment
has followed the use of the various extract! cl
Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until tin
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the load of obloquy which rests
upon it. And we think we have ground for
believing it has virtues which are irresistible
by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intend
'ed to cure. In order to secure their complete
eradication from the system, the remedy should
be judiciously taken according to directions on
i the bottle.
