-The R**y. Wi'tiam S. Ci'.ley absconded
frouilhis place on Tbuistlay evening, Oct
13, carrying with him a little daughter of
the lief. J. F. Witherell, editor of the Gem
A G*z tte. He succeeded in gettmg her
into a c image with him by making pro
mss to her, and telling her that he was
g ,;ng to the Cam rtery, and wanted her
to go with him to place some flowers and
evdrgreeas, which he ha 1 obtained, on his ;
wife’s grave; but when in the ctrriage. he
drove rapidly away, she protesting against ’
going with him. A meeting of citizens was !
immediately coiled, \vh**u resolutions sym- !
patiiizing with the afflicted parent were
unanimously a dop'd. Here is one of the
resolutions.
- Resolved , That the recent act of W. S.
C. in deceitfully and forcibly al>ducting
the daughter of the Rev. J. F. Wittered,
the moral sense of the whole community,
ar.d will ever be remembered as an outaagu
of mingled tneanneM and cruelty.”
The Maxcfactturn or Piih.—Among
the other epistles found in the posses
sion of the insurgent leader Brown, was a I
letter from Charles B’.air, Collinsville, Con
necticut, who seems to have been the man
ufacturer of the pikes intended for distribu
tion among the negroes. These pik**j were
fifteen hundred in number, and might have
proved a very formidable weapon even in
hands entirely unaccustomed to weapons of
war. These p.k**s are said to have been
finished in quite handsome style. It is not
probable that the manufacturer of those
murderous instruments was ignorant of the
purpose for which they were to be used. — j
At a’l events, be should be brought to trial
for Ins participation in thus treasonable and j
murderous conspiracy against the United
Stales and Virginia, as much as if he had
been found using, in our own State, the
weapons he had manufactured. In the
adoption of vigorous measures against the
conspirators in other States, wre shall have
ao evidence of the good faith of the u>n- i
slaveholding communities upon a subject
which involves the life of every man in the
South. —Richmond Dispatch.
Where iid Oi.d Brows get ms Finds? j

“There is no doubt a deeply organised so

old Brown and his fellow conspirators. A
man this morning said to a geoUeman who
told us, that he would willii gly contribute
one thousand dollars to put a revolver in the
hands of every slave in the South!” This j
