It would gladden the heart of the aboli

by their masters to purchase the Brown

for money “wrung from the sweat ar.d

supply the South with shoes and boots!

here, among the obj-cts of which is the

details of the plan, we have the fullest co .fi

know is in cotte nplation, and we trust
will soon be ,<ut into p ac ical operation.
P iva e irterprise has already demon
strated the i racticability of manufacturing
shoes in Georgia, even before our people
had b- coa.a awakened to the expedience
aid propriety of measures for the promotion
(four ind -pendence of the North. We saw
yesterday, at Caps. Jno. W. Anderson’s of
fice, corner of Drayton and Bryan streets,
sarr p’es of negro brogans, manufactured at
Eatouton, Ga., by the Messrs. J. C. fc J. C.
Denham, from leather Untied by th*-mtelves,
which competent judges pronounce superior
to any shoes of the same kind brought to
this market from the North. We under
stood, also, that a Mr. Glover has a shoe
factory at Marietta, Geo, where shoes of
similar quality are produced.
What, then, is to hinder us from manu
facturing our own shoes! If any have
doubts, let them examine the specimens of
Georgia shoes, made of Georgia leather,
which may be seen at CapL Anderson s of

VI inter lug Mock on Cornstalks
T. C. I’etcrn, of Darien, N. Y., ex
presHeß the opiuion, in the Rural JV. j
Yorker, that we can winter four
times as much stock ujk>ii an acre of
corn and stalks, as upon the hay
from an acre, and there is no profit
in growing hay for stock on land
that will produce good corn. But
the corn must be ground, and the
stalks cut and cooked with the meal!
lie tells how someone (probably
himself) wintered liis stock, last win
ter. “having a good pile ot cornstalks
well saved j a little straw and less
hay.” A good warm stable was pro*
vided for the cattle, and feeding tubs
made sawing good stout barrels in
two. The cutter used was Fowler
k Dav’s, of Fowlerville. He says: I
“The stalks were all cut, and more
or less straw was cut with them.-
Kach cow was allowed all she could
eat three times a day, and the mess
night and morning was fixed in this
wise: The cows at noon had a feed
of dry cut stalks and straw, which |
they would eat pretty clean except
the coarser bits. At about three
o’clock these were gathered into the
tub*, and enough more added to
make the evening meal. To this was
added two quart* of corn meal and
two quarts of bran, and hot water
turned on, as much as would well I
moisten the whole, and all well mix
ed. The morning meal was the same
being mixed over night or early in ;
the morning. In this way no stalks
were wasted, the cows gave a good i
supply of milk, and increased in con
dition.

TO FHTSICIAXS AND APOTHECARIES.
The Philadelphia Gazette, referring to a
recent caac of accidental poisoning which
occurred in that city, speaks as follows,
touching the medical nomenclature of the
present day:
Prom the circumstances of this case, we j
enn cnie to but one conclusion—that the
foolish mysterv thrown around their art,

The Vnv Haven ( aion .Heeling.
The meeting of the New Haven
people on tho 14th inst., for the pur- j
jtoac of testifying their devotion to i
the Uuion and the Constitution, as !
well as their disapprobation of the
Harper’s Ferry raid, and its sympa
thisers, was not only large in a num
erical point of view, but was also
characterised by the expression of
the strongest conservative and Union
loving sentiments, l.y men high in
every position which confers honor ‘
at home and respect abroad. The
strongest Southern speeches we have
read from any of the Northern meet
ings were heard here. One in i
particular made by the Hon. Ralph |
I. Ingersoll commends itself to our;
attention for its national sentiment, !
its pure patriotism and the unnterci- j
till lashing it gives to those who j
have placed a horse thief, robber,
traitor and murderer in the calender
of saints. \\ e make the following
extract:
“John Brown is pronounced a
“saint.” God forbid that 1 should
tread roughly on the grave of anv
human being. But 1 must say, that
1 have heard and read of martyrs i
and saints, but never of one who ear
ned that distinction by robbery or i
murder. If John Brown was a saint
and his death that of a martyred
saint, it is the first I have heard of.
where not a word of prayer either
for him or others, escaped the mar-1
tyr's 1 ps. I have been informed that !
he was pr-nouncod a “saint,” by a j
distinguished talented aud Reverend
lecturer from abroad, in one of the
churches of this city, but a few even
ings since; the information comes
to me from one who was present, and
I see by the papers that other clergy
men in other places have said the
same. 1 have an habitual, education
al, respect for the clergy, of which I
cannot divest myself, if I would, and *
would not if I could. It may le my [
old fashioned “bringing up.” But I J
must say, if this is scriptural teaching ,
two, at least, of the commandments i
must have dropped from the decalo
gue, either shortly liefore, or imme
diately after the Harper’s Ferry so I
ray. (Roars of laughter.) One of
the articles of the pocket conatitu- ,
tion found upon Brown’s person, if I ■
remember right, provided for replen
ishing his treasury, by the plate, or
other articles of metallic value, to
he taken from the houses of the peo
pie of Virginia, after the owners had
been driven out, or otherwise dis
|H>sed of. But it would strike the
ears of a religious congregation rath
er harshly, to he tol 1 in plain words,
by their ministers, that, a saint might
steal his neighbor's spoons, and sanc
tify the act, I*}- shooting him if he
resisted. (Long continued laughter |
and applause.”)
The Hon. Mr. Ingersoll was fora
long time a prominent member of
Congress, was Minister to the Court
of St. Petersburg under Mr. Polk’s
administration, and is at this time a
leading lawyer in Connecticut.
The Democratic l*:rty.
(A Fragment.)
Joyner was a man of infinite jest
and imperturbable gravity.
Gen. Jones was a hot-headed and
impetuous democrat.
Joyner did not belong to the Dem
ocratic party.
Gen. Jones approached a part)’ of
men, composed almost entirely of
his own political friends, in hot
haste, bringing the (to them) glad
tidings of another democratic victo
ry. He was received with enthusi
astic shouts of applause. Joj'ner
sought and obtained an introduction
to Gen. Jones.
“How arc you Mr. Joyner, ** and
at the same time giving him a grip
that would have made an) r other
man repent the embrace.
Jovner released bis band, and
with sincerity prominent in every
lineament <f his visage, dcferently
addressed the impetuous Democrat.
“General Jones am I right in sup
posing the principles of the demo
cratic party to be the principles of
the democratic party ?”
“To be sure,” dubiously retorted
the General
“Well then.” replied Joyner, “I
am correct in supposing the prin
lof the democratic party to l>e the
I principles of the democratic party,
and sir. according to this admission,
that the principles of the democrat
ic party are the principles of the
democratic party, must be the prin
ciples of the democratic party.”
The savage glance of Gen. Jones
could discover not the slightest
trace of mischief and with an effort j
to control himself, he replied : |
“llow is that, Mr. Joyner? Ij
don’t know that I understand you. i
Please be a little more definite.”
“I now feci convinced,” resumed i
Jovner, “that the principles of the j
democratic party : and sir, if the |
! principles of the democratic party I
! are the principles of the democratic i
party, why, then, the principles of |
the democratic party, must be the |
principles of the dem—”
‘ Here a row ensued, and the confer- |
, once was broken off, yet “the prin- !
ciplcs of the democratic party.” were j
as well defined as any of the leaders j
| can define them now a-days.
But though worse speckled, in the ;
, color of different political diseases,
than Jacob’s cattle, there is one
thing, and only one, upon which the
leaders of the National democratic
party agree and that one thing is the
i spoils.
gefTht? Democratic caucus held at Wash
! ingtoii. or. Friday night, according to the
telegraphic report, (says the Louisvilla
Journal.) preferred a Squatter Sovereignty
Speaker to a Southern American. That is,
they would vote, for the purpose of pre
serving their party organization, for a man
who holds sentiments more pc-tilent than
the Wilmot Proviso, and had taken a short
cut to abolitionism, rather than a Southern
conservative, who is sure to protect the
right-, interests and privileges of the South,
j >i r . Montgomery, of Pennsylvania, thought
there might be a union between the Ameri
cans and Democrats, w ho were national men,
to crush out sectionalism; but Mr. *kirris, of
Virginia, would not a?k Northern Denies
crats to make such a sacrifice as to vote for a
South American. Where is Sarey Gamp, to
aid our new Mrs. Ha-ris as accoucher of this
hvbrid Speaker? We hope the results of
this caucus will satisfy our friends in Con
gress that it is folly to play into the hands
of the Democracy, who are trying to worry
out their patience. We think it will; and
we hope soon to hear of the election of an
anti-Democratic Speaker, who is conserva
tive in hi* principles, and will so appoint the
committees that Loco toco rascality may b -
j probed to its very bottom. This will
the country at large, and show the necessity
of moderation and unity for the election of
a conservative President, next year.
Distress and dificulty are often the
i spurs to diligence.

Dear Sie—Yours of the 13th inst., ha*lseiireeeired
its contents noted, Ac. In reply to your enquiry in |
regard to the Manipulated Guano a* a fertilizer—l ;
am well pleased so tar as 1 have tested its use. I ap
plied at tout 100 lls. per acre on land that was badly 1
worn, and not of the lvest when fresh. The prodtu-l
of the field where the Guano was applied is over SOU ■
lbs. of seed cotton per acre. The same kind f land .
without the Guano produced about 400 lbs. per aero.
My mode of applying the Guano, was by depositing j
it in the drill lie fore bedding up the land. I have not
tried its use on earn, but have no doubt but it will
succeed well. I shall use it pretty extensively on
nty next crop.
Yours Respectfully.

LITTLE’S
ANODYNE COUGH DROPS.
A certain cure for Colds, Coughs, Bronchitis,
Asthma. Pain in tlw. Breast: also Croup,
Whooping ft ughs. Ac., Ac.,
amongst Children.
This is a pleasant medicine to take, producing im
mediate relief, and in nine out of ten rases a prompt
cure. It exercises the most controlling influence
over Coughs and Irritatim of the Lnugs of auv re
medy known, often stopping the most violent in &
few hours, or at most in i day or two. Many cases
thought to be decidedly consumptive, have been
promptly cured by using a few bottles. As anodyne
expectorant, without astringing the Bowels, it stands
paramount to ail cough n.ixtures.
LITTLE’S
FRENCH MIXTURE.
This is prepared from a French Recipe (in the
forms of No. 1 and 2; tile first for the acute, and
No. 2 for the chronic stage, i and from its unexampled
success is likely to supersede every other remedy
for the cure of diseases of the Kidneys and Bladder,
Gonorrhieai, Bleuuorrhoeal, and Leuchorrhceal or
Fluor Albus affections. This extensive compound
combines properties totally different in taste anil
character from any thing to be found in the United
States Pharmacopeia ; and in poiut cf safety and effi
ciency is not riyailed in America.
LITTLE’S
RINGWORM & TETTER OINTMENT.
FORTH, No. 3.
Hundreds of cases of Chronic Totters, Scald Heads,
and diseases of the skin generally, have been cured
by this remedy; “nd sinie the introduction of the
No. 2 preparation (being stronger) scarcely a case
has been fouud that it wilt not effectually eradicate
iu a short time. For the cure of Cancerous Sores
and Ulcers it is applied in the form of plasters, and
is almost infallible.
In more than twe hundred places in Georgia, and
in the Southern States, they are to be bad ; and as
there are scamps about who are counterfeiting bis
remedies, by painting olf their own or something
else, by using the same or similar names (for no pa
tent is wanted o.* secured amid the absurd patents of
the day,) let all be cautioned to look well for the
signature of the Proprietor, thus:—
