THE BOOK OF GENESIS
By J. W. SMITH
War. Chapter 14. This chapter
tains a brief history of the first
j^torded in the annals of the

taused by pride, covetousness,
, - -asping ambition. Countless

these abominable idols. War,

t e end of which time they rebelled
against their conquerors. In the four¬
teenth year their former masters re¬
appeared, fought against them, and
put them to flight. The weak fell

mained were carried into captivity
"With their goods and victuals. We
have reasons to believe that slavery
ad its origin in those days when
. < n and women were stolen and tak
into captivity. Note here also the
‘ ginning of the fulfillment of Noah’s
Li ophecy, “Cursed be Canaan; a
; vant of servants shall he be unto
■: ' brethren.”
2. The Helpless Captive. Vs. 12.
'‘And they took Lot, Abram’s broth
■ei’s son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his
goods, and departed.” Loc found out
, what every worldly man will fir I out
• oner or later, that thieves will car
: off the treasures laid up on earth.
Matt. 6 : 19. The goods which had
*: -asioned his separation from Ab
r n are now in the hands of his ene¬
mies. He had part with the wicked
S lomites in their prosperity, now
he must share in their adversity.
3. The Escaped Prisoner. Vs. 13.
“And there came one that had es¬
caped, and told Abram the Hebrew.”
This escaped man who, very likely,
-v, ;.s a wicked Sodomite, turned to
■ Abram, the man of God, in time of
tr -uble. Many people who are living
' in sin today, without respect for God,
■
His law, and His worship, will look
• the humble followers of Christ for
s ritual help in the hour of trouble
,a"d death.
4. The Faithful Friend. Vss. 14-16.
"When Abram heard that his brother
was taken captive, he, forgetting past
differences, pursued the enemy unto
Dan, a distance of 120 miles, smote
them on the right and on the left,
brought back his brother, Lot, all
tne goods, and all the people. As far
:a^ we know this was the only mili
tary expedition in which Abram was
•engaged. In the previous chapter we
see his humility; in this chapter we
see his courage. It was by faith in
Cod he conquered the united armies
i of the four kings. It was a miracu¬
lous victory which foreshadowed the
conquests of his children centuries
afterwards under the leadership of
Joshua.
5. The Defeated Ruler. Vss. 17,
21-24. “The King of Sodom said un
it Abram, ‘Give me the persons, and
take the goods to thyself.’ ” Accord¬
ing to Eastern usage all property re¬
covered belonged to the person by
-whom it was recaptured, while the
prisoners were allowed to return to
their former condition. This shows
that King Bera offered to Abram
•or) iy what was his by custom, and that
he is not entitled to the generosity
-with which he is sometimes credited.
* the other hand we see the exalted
Xtfact Jf of Abram in refusing to take
the smallest thing from the King
^Tsodom. While he declines to accept
anything for himself, he does not
prevent those who were with him
do receive their share of the spoil.
Before he met, or in the presence
of, the King of Sodom, Abram took a
solemn oath that he would not touch
the goods of the wicked people, by
•vvhich he built a wall of defence
around himself to protect him against
the temptation of the ungodly. He
-was determined that he would have
r>o political relationship with the sin
.
jters of the vale of Siddim. The
-round of his refusal was good: “Lest
thou shouldest say, I have made Ab
:; ; m rich.” This reason implies—(1)
His implicit faith in God. (2) His
utter dependence upon God. (3) His
r-oble desire for the things of God.
6. The Unique Personage. Vss.
20. Who was Melchizedek?
scholars believe he was a
ish prince of the posterity of
who maintained the true
and pure worship of the living
He was raised by God, and in an
traordinary way called to the
office of king and priest. He was
like the Aaronic priests because
had no successor; and was,
fore, a type of the exalted Christ
the Fathers right hand in the
uation of His priesthood.
We are told that Abram gave
chizedek “tithes of all.” This
that the principle of tithing
back to the days of Abram, and,
sibly, to the time of Adam.
the rule of tithing preceded the
saic law, there is no reason to
its claim upon Christians in the
pensation of grace. If every
er of Jesus Christ gave “as God
prospered him,’’ it would be
sary to call on those who are still
the kingdom of Satan for
assistance to help disseminate
Gospel of salvation. As a rule
saved contributors hope to win
en by their giving and not by
grace.
We learn from this portion
God’s word that—( 1 ) The power
the sword can never unite hearts. ( 2
We are to be ever ready to help
brother in distress. (3) The best
to help the world is to be
from it. (4) A small army with
in God is never defeated. (5)
is kind to the righteous and
eous. ( 6 ) A Christian should
accept from the world anything
would bring dishonor to Christ.

Kidneys as You Clean
Your Bowels
Most folks forget that the
like the bowels, sometimes get
and clogged and need a flu-hing
sionally, else we hav e backache and
misery in the kidney region, severe
headaches, rheumatic twinges, torpid
liver, acid stomach, sleeplessness and
all sorts of bladder * disorders.
You simply must keep your kidneys
active and clean and the moment you
feel an ache or pain in the kidney
region begin drinking lots of water.
Also get about four ounces of Jad Salts
from any good drug store here, take
a tablespoonful in a glass of water be¬
fore breakfast for a few days and your
kidneys will then act fine. \ his famous
salts is made from the acid of grapes
and lemon juice, combined with lithia,
and is intended to flush clogged kid¬
neys and help stimulate them to activ¬
ity. It also helps neutralize the acids
in the urine so they no longer irritate,
thus helping to relieve bladder dis¬
orders.
Jad Salts is inexpensive; makes a
delightful effervescent lithia water drink
which everybody should take now and
then to help keep their kidneys clean.
A well-known local druggist says he
sells lots of Jad Salts to folks who be¬
lieve in trying to correct kidney trouble
while it is only trouble. By all means
have your physician examine your kid¬
neys at least twice a year.

IF SKIN BREAKS I
OUT AND ITCHES
APPLY SULPHUR
Just the moment you apply Mcntho
Sulplmr to an itching, itching burning or
broken out skin, the stops and
healing begins, says a noted skin spe¬
cialist. This sulphur preparation, made
into a pleasant cold cream, gives such
a quick relief, even to fiery eczema,
that nothing lias ever been found to
take its place.
Because of its germ-destroying prop¬
erties, it quickly subdues the itching,
cools the irritation and heals the eczema
right up, leaving a clear, smooth skin
in place of ugly eruptions, rash, pim¬
ples or roughness.
You do not have to wait for improve¬
ment. It quickly shows. You can get
a little jar of Rowles Mentho-Sulphur
at any drug store.
RED PEPPER HEAT
Red Pepper Rub takes the “ouch”
from sore, stiff, aching joints. It can¬
not hurt you, and it certaiidy stops that
old rheumatism torture at once.
When you are suffering so you can
hardly get around, just try Red Pepper
Rub and you will have the quickest
relief known. Nothing has such con¬
centrated, penetrating heat as red pep¬
pers. Just as soon as you apply Red
Pepper Rub you will feel the tingling
heat. In three minutes it warms the
sore spot through and through. Pain
and soreness arc gone.
Ask any good druggist for a jar of
Rowles Red Pepper Rub. Be sure to
get the genuine, with the name Rowles
on each package,
HAVE DARK HAIR a!
AND LOOK YOUNG
Nobody Can Tell When You
Darken Gray, Faded Hair
With Sage Tea
Grandmother kept her hair beauti¬
fully darkened, glossy and attractive
with a brew of Sage Tea and Sulphur.
Whenever her hair took on that dull,
faded or streaked appearance, this sim¬
ple mixture was applied with wonder¬
ful effect. By asking at any drug store
for "Wyeth’s Sage and Sulphur Com¬
pound,” you will get a large bottle of
this old-time recipe, improved by the
addition of other ingredients, all ready
to use, at very little cost. This sim¬
ple mixture can be depended upon the to
restore natural color and beauty to
hair.
Well-known druggists say everybody
uses Wyeth’s Sage and Sulphur Com¬
pound now because it darkens so natur¬
ally and evenly that nobody can tell it
has been You applied—it’s simply dampen so easy comb to use,
too. a or
soft brush and draw it through your
hair, taking one strand at a time. By
morning the gray hair disappears; af¬
ter another application or two, it is re¬
stored to its natural color and looks
glossy, soft and beautifuL
The result will be a saving of about
2.5 milliamperes in your plate cur¬
rent without loss ot signal strength.
If you add a C battery there will
be a still greater reduction in plate
current. It will fall to about 5 or
0 milliamperes and that means in
your case ten dollars a year less
for B batteries.”
To substantiate the statement,
measurements were made at the
Everoady Laboratories at Long
Island City, and on that set, which
was three tube receiver, the plate
current had fallen from 13.5 milli¬
amperes to 11.0. The addition of
a C battery of 414 volts further re¬
duced the plate current to but 5.5
milliamperes.
