Macon County W. A. By Horne
When peaches are spoken of, we can
always remember the hundreds of cars
that are shipped annually from almost
every part of Macon County.
From Slappey’s straight down to Ogle¬
thorpe, the annual output is conspicuous.
From Macon County ten square miles
were taken to go into Peach County, and
most all of this land grows the finest of
peaches. Marshallville first, with its
comes
production, then Montezuma and Barron’s
Lane, most of the orchards there being
owned by men of Macon and Montezuma.
Montezuma has about 2,500 people, and
is in overy way a modern little city.
The school that was recently completed
cost a hundred thousand dollars, and is
truly a modern institution. Prof. W. E.
Queener is head of the institution and has
proven himself highly capable of handling
the school and societies connected with it.
Both the Baptists and Methodists have
their own standard Sunday schools and
ladies’ societies, together with the young
people’s societies.
Carnegie Library is an asset that
Montezuma has had for the past eighteen
years, Two modern hotels are located
there, tho Minor and the Montezuma
Hotols.
Tho electric light plant is privately
owned, there being two plants in opera¬
tion regularly furnishes and one lights held for in Oglethorjjo reserve, as
this city
and the surrounding community. There
are modern sewerage and water works
systems. ice plant
During the past two years of an forty thou¬
has been built at the cost
sand dollars, and there is one knitting
mill and one oil mill, with a chemical
plant that has recently been completed.
During last shipping season about shipped two
hundred ears of peaches were around five
from there, not to speak of
hundred cars from Barron’s Lane, which
wore shipped largely by Montezuma grow
era.
Fifteen hundred to two thousand crates
of asparagus were shipped last year, and
recently close to throe hundred acres were

set out, which will bring this year’s crop
up to nearly six thousand crates.
Montezuma has an annual average of
shipping shipped three thousand bales of cotton,
and about seven thousand pounds
of pecans last year.
Montezuma’s thrift and progress is
largely due to the untiring efforts of
Mayor Oscar McKenzie and Chief of
Police W. K. Walters, both of whom have
proven themselves almost invaluable in
keeping the city as it has been kept. The
eouncilmen are Reuben Black, Jake Happ,
Watt Espy, G. T. McLendon and P. H.
Marshall. Mr. Walters is chairman of the
Water and Light Commission.
Oglethorpe will be remembered as the
county seat, having been so for years.
Oglethorpe is also very progressive, and
is a junction on the Atlanta, Birmingham
and Atlantic and the Central of Georgia
railroads.
There are close to a thousand people
there, who are enjoying as prosperous
years ns any community that can be men¬
tioned in the county. J. O. L. (Count)
Jolly will be widely and pleasantly re¬
membered as the sheriff of Macon Coun¬
ty, a man who has given very efficient
service to tho entire community for years
past.
Surely, with towns like Marshallville,
Montezuma, Oglethorpe, Ideal and others,
with entire communities that are as
progressive as those to be found in Macon
County, a county the size of this, with its
fine roads and developments, is well worthy
of great mention.
