Voltage Regulator Needed to Make
B Battery Eliminators More Economical
fH OME-MADE current
df tv ic«' h. Intended to
inate II batteries,
often found to be
expensive because
require frequent tube
Even some Inferior
devices are designed so that
rectifier tube sometimes lasts
than a hundred hours of
service. Such high upkeep
completely destroy the
object - economy and
—which animates investment in
current tap device.
However, there is no reason
a B battery eliminator should
be economical. If there is
meaiiK of regulating the
supplying the rectifier tube Ilia
menu., they may be updated at
voltage which (permits of
mum filament life, provided
excessive plate currant, so
tlve to the filaments, is not
through the tube.
Vacuum tube filaments are
signed to give long life at
rated filament voltage. Even
operated a few per cent above
rated filament voltage, their life
materially reduced. The
vacuum tube will last but half as
long If the filaments are supplied
with n voltage & per cent above
their rated voltage.
Tube Limitations
A UV 20’ A tube should not be
operated with more than five volts
of filament potential. When this
type of tube is used with a current
tap device as rectifier, it Is gener
ally burned somewhat above this
voltage In order that its current
output may be sufficient to meet
the needs of a multi tube receiver,

FLUCTUATIONS IN POWER LINE VOLTAGE
AM f| uc t ua tions in power supply are coupled to the receiving tubes
through "current supply devices. Curve A chows the voltage fluctuations
an avera ge power generator, while B and C (below) show the effect of
ca p ac jty arc j inductive loads upon the voltage supply,
An accurate alternating current
voltmeter should therefore he ap
piled to the filament terminals of
the rectifier tubes, in order to
make certain that there is no over¬
load. Otherwise frequent tube re¬
newals will be necessary,
Not only are voltage readings
necessary, but a means of regula¬
tion must be provided. The step
down traneformer supplying the
filament voltage may be perfectly
designed, in order to meet the volt¬
age requirements of the tubes
when the current supply is 110
volt CO cycle alternating current,
Considerable variations In line volt
age fnke place constantly, which
nullify the accuracy of the voltage
I output of such a transformer. Kor
instance, a transformer which gives
5.0 volts output at 110 volts of line
supply gives an output of 5.4G volts
120. This increase is sufficient to
cut the life of the average tube
three-fourths,
Fluctuating Currents Bad
Power circuits are so designed
that their voltage usually drops as
the load Increases and vice versa.
Kor Instance, In an industrial cltv
measurement of voltage at a con¬
sumer’s residence revealed that at
half a minute before twelve the
voltage of supply rose from 95 to
120 volts, while just before five In
the afternoon it increased from 100
to 125 volts. These wide fluctua¬
tions are disastrous to the life of
vacuum tube filaments which are
supplied with current through
transformers from such mains un¬
less there Is means of regulating
the filament voltage.
During the early evening, line
voltage is usually about a hun¬
dred volts; It gradually Increases
through the evening so that by
ten-thirty It Is up to 120 volts.
Consequently, there Is no possibil¬
ity of tube economy with a current
tap device, unless there Is an ac¬
curate voltmeter and a specially
designed step down transformer,
with various steps, so that these
wide variations in supply voltage
may be compensated for. This pre¬
caution is often neglected in arti¬
cles describing how to make cur¬
rent taps, and many of the com¬
mercial devices are not supplied
with this desirable feature.
