TAKE THE CASE OF
LITTLE CHARLIE
By CELESTINE SIBLEY
In The Atlanta Constitution
A Fort Valley peach grower who
took his hours-old baby in a basket
in July 1946 and set out in his car
to “drive until I find a doctor who
can save his life,” came back to
Atlanta on a mission:
To tell the world about the deli¬
cate and little-known operation
is saving the lives of four or five
babies annually in Atlanta but is
still unheard of in parts of rural
Georga.
As “Exhibit A, »> Hulon Tribble had
to offer red-haired, rambunctious
Charlie, now 20 months old. Charlie
was horn with an incomplete esoph
agus. The tube that should have led
from his mouth to his stomach was
closed, but farther down his wind
pipe another, smaller tube connected
with his stomach. The result was
that Charlie strangled and turned
blue on tKb first feeding after birth
and would, within a few days have
died from starvation andior drown
ing. He could receive no food but his
stomach was syphoning
fluids into his lungs.
“They said his case was hopeless,"
Tribble reported, grasping his agile
son by the romper seat and hoisting
him out of trouble. “But if it’s your
baby you don’t give up that easy.”
Putting the delicate, ominously
quiet infant in a basket, Tribble set
out for Macon bent on driving North
until he found a doctor vvho would
operate. Physician^ at Macon were
discouraging him and the determin¬
ed Tribble drove on into Atlanta,
At Emory University Hospital he
found an eminent chest, surgeon who
felt the baby had a chance.
The operation, performed first in
1942 by Dr. Cameron Haight, of the
University of Michigan, and Dr. Wil
liam E. Ladd, professor of pediatric
surgery at Harvard, called for open¬
ing the esophagus and connecting it
with the stomach. Charlie was 48
hours old when he underwent the op
eration, but the Emory surgeon, who
aged that his name ho withheld,
said it is preferable to get infants
by the time they are 24 hours old.
The discovery of penicillin and
streptomycin made the operation
possible, the surgeon said. He said
before the advent of these drugs a
newborn infant could not have wea
thered the operation. Since the oper¬
ation was discovered the Atlanta
surgeon has operated on four or five
babies annually.

Dr. Theron Price
Is Heard At
Baptist Church
B> MRS. W. J. BRASWELL
The Baptist congregation at Fort
Valley was offered a rare treat in
the message Sunday morning, April
; 4, by the guest speaker, Dr. Theron
I D. Price, of Mercer University.
Dr. Price read the, words of Paul
addressed to the Roman Christians
a, 'd recorded in the twelfth chapter
°f that New Testament epistle. By
"’ay of introduction of his theme,
“Present Your Bodies a Living
vifice,” he stated that most pro
grossed Christians have just enough
religion to be fairly comfortable in
the proximity of good,
Touching upon the prevalent re
ligiosity he declared there is
ing so futile as it is, and explaining
the words of the great Apostle Paul
in “presenting one’s body a living
sacrifice,” he stated that it involves
a purpose to know,, accept, and do
the will of God. He contrasted the
dead sacrifices as offered of old with
a living sacrifice and spoke of the
extra-ordinary privilege offered to
■
ordinary man in the challenge to
plunge into the grace of God Whose
love is vast, austere, terrific, but a
love that responds in the Father
heart to the heart of man. Conse
cration, he said, is a privilege which
offers the highest calling, the richest
,
area, and the greatest happiness.
The church choir presented special
music under the direction of Mrs.
Fred Fagan, org-anist.
Dr. Price will leave Mercer Uni
versity to be associated with the
Southern Baptist Seminary, Louis
. ville, Ky.
South Dakota Farmers Save
Of the many ways in which South
Dakota farmers increased gross re

are cited by the South Dakota sta¬

oats through planting of newer va¬

Consumption and increased meat
production through adoption of im¬
proved feeding practices for cattle,
sheep and swine, including practi¬
cable use of soft corn, $20,200,000
and adoption of improved breeding,
feeding and management practices
for poultry, $1,562,000; a total of
$38,532,000.

Bankers Lay Plans to

What banking leaders of Ameri

grounds that they are too rigid,
They can impose their own volun

Almond Hulls for Cows
To determine the value of dried
almond hulls as feed for dairy cows,
tests are being conducted at the Uni¬

showed that although hogs refuse to
eat almond hulls they are eaten
readily by dairy cows.
Reduce Draft Colds
Colds caused by drafts are re¬
