I Swan Explains
! Insect Control
A side dressing of quick acting
nitrogen, such as nitrate of soda.
stimulates rapid and early fruit
ing of cotton and helps it get
ahead of the boll weevil, County
Agent R. P. Swan said this week.
He recommended applying 100
to 200 pounds pre acre, depending
upon need, just as the cotton be¬
gins to square.
The county agent also recom¬
mended frequent and systematic
inspection of cotton fields to de¬
termine the extent of insect in¬
festation. Terming this essential
to successful insect control, he ex
r lained that cotton insects multi¬
ply rapidly and dangerous build¬
ups may develop with little warn¬
ing if fields are not, checked fre¬
quently.
Swan said that timely and in¬
telligent application of poison not
only gives more effective control
of cotton insects, but many times
results in savings of insecticides.
On the other hand, poison may
be wasted if it is applied with
little regard to plant growth and
son.

of Mrs. Carithers and Mr. and
Mrs. Houston.

He pointed out that learning how
