drive so fast down Oak Street in our
You see, we live on Oak Street and
boy and girl live on Oak Street. We have
peculiar situation in that the closest
mate of the age of our little boy lives
the street and they are continuously
ing, sometimes running, across the
to each other.
They’re only four years old and the
ger of motor vehicles does not enter
minds most of the time, no matter
much their mothers and fathers caution
them to look for vehicles before
the street.
Perhaps we are too nervous, but
we are home in the daytime and our
is out of sight, and we hear a car
as it picks up speed coming up or down
the street, we catch a good case of the “jit¬
ters” and cringe away from the sound. We
have an almost incontrolable urge to rush
out into the street and stop either the car
or the boys.
That’s why we have a special place in
(our prayers for the people who drive fast
up and down Oak Street. We pray that
their eye will remain clear and their foot
firm on the brake if need be. You see, four
year-olds are not supposed to think,
they’re just supposed to twine themselves
around your heart -and bring a little joy
into your life, a little gladness where there
all too often is sadness.
So, please, mister, keep a clear eye in
your head and a firm foot on the brake as
you speed up and down all the streets in
our town where four-year-olds are wont
to cross the street. Better still, why not
slow down and be sure that gladness stays
in all our hearts?
