Senator Walter F. George, sen¬
ior senator from Georgia, and the
dean of the U. S. Senate from
the standpoint of service, announ¬
ced yesterday morning that he is
quitting the race foi' re-electicn.
His action makes former Gov¬
ernor Herman Talmadge anodds
on favorite for the position al¬
though Talmadge has not formal¬
ly announced his candidacy.
Senator George did not enume
rate his reas ns for not running
although he did announce at the
time that President Eisenhower
has offered him a post as his per¬
sonal envoy to the NATO (North
Atlantic Treaty Orga .n 1 .
Prior to the announce
ment his per-wa! physiol'n made
a 'statement tgarding the sena
■era phy , C < 1 eonditi, n and said
that the i rent v . rh fixed
by Sens’- Ge- e.
Worth Da :el«s said that he
had the "«-yn-tr old sena
m a king a A i’enuouB
esmnnn n. le pointed ’hat he
(the se has a mild heart
conditio and mild diabetes. He
emphasized that conditions
are mi’d, that the senator is not
seriously ill, and that with pr per
rest and freedom from great re¬
sponsibility there is no reason why
he can’t live a ’long and happy
life.’
George, a veteran of 34 years
in the senate, is chairman of the
powerful Foreign Relations Com¬
mittee and a member of the also
powerful Finance Committee. He
is prcbably the most influential
member of the senate today.
Although he had not formally
announced for the position, it has
been generally assumed that for¬
mer governor Herman Talmadge,
at a high ebb of popularity in the
state, would have opposed George
for the senate seat. Mrst news¬
paper observers indicated that the
e:f-governor would have beaten
the veteran senator, something his
’ather, ex-governor Gene Tal¬
madge failed to do in 1938.
Talmadge is not expected to
have strong, if any, opposition if
he decides to make the race.
Senate r George emphasized in
his statement yesterday that he
will complete his current term,
which expires next January.
