currence in his proposal.
The City of Macon has already
indicated its desire to obtain this
kind of optional coverage for the
members of its employee retire¬
ment plan.
The George amendment would
amend the Federal social security
law to conform with recent ac¬
tion by the Georgia General As¬
sembly authorizing coverage of
those employees of the State now
under the Georgia State Employ-
1 ees’ Retirement System who desire
to come under the Old-Age and
Survivors Insurance program of
the Social Seeuritv System.
The Georgia law would become
effective under the George amend
ment which permits the State of
Georgia to enter into an agree¬
ment with the Secretary of Health
Education and Welfare to accom¬
plish this purpose.
The State of Georgia took this
enabling action in anticipation of
the George amendment which is
required because the State cannot,
for fiscal reasons, superimpose
Federal social security coverage
on its present State retirement
system. It was felt that the cost
was prohibitive inasmuch as the
is now contributing 7 1-2 per cent
of each member’s salary to the
State retirement system. However,
there was no objection to allow
ing these employees who desire
the additional protection provided
by social security if they w’ c h to
pay the additional contribution tc
social security.
Under the Georgia law the vest
