Mrs. Alice Clayton Wheeler Dies After
Long Illness; Long Time Resident
Two Reserve Men
Receive Certificate
Of Appreciation
Two Fort Valley men received

the past week for enlisted men in
the Army Reserve.
First Lieutenant Emory M. Wil¬
son, Commanding officer of the
994th Quartermaster Service Com¬
pany (white) located in Fort Val¬
ley, and Captain Thomas L. Del
ton, Commanding Officer of the
247th Ordnance Company (Negro)
were the recipients of the certifi¬
cates signed by the Secretary of
the Army, Wilbur M. Brucker.
Delton received his award last
week to become the first such re¬
cipient in the Middle Georgia area
and Wilson received his on Monday
night of this week to become the
second recipient.
The presentation were made by
Lt. Colonel Edward W. Mazur, Pub
District Chief, United States Re¬
serve Advisor Group located in
Macon. The presentations were
made in ceremonies in Fort Valley.
Delton received his certificate
for enlisting 15 men in the com¬
pany he commands in the past
year and Wilson for enlisting 10
men in his outfit during the same
period of time.
Dance Recital To
Be Held Tuesday
Mrs, John Hicks will present
her pupils in a dance recital on
Tuesday, May 21, at 8:15 p.m. at
the high school auditorium.

ballet and tap routines as well as
several vocal numbers.

attend and there will be no admiss

Woman’s Club Has
Final Meeting r?
The Fort Valley Woman’s Club
held their final meeting of the
club year Tuesday afternoon at the
club house. The business session
was presided over by Mrs. T. A.
Jones, president.
The group voted to make Fort
Valley a bird sanctuary pending
approval of the mayor and city
council.
Following the business session

crops.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice
Clayton Wheeler were held Tues¬
day, May 14, at the Fort Valley
Methodist Church. Mrs. Wheeler
died at her residence here early
Monday morning.
A native of Lake Park, Ga.,
Mrs. Wheeler moved to Fort Val¬
ley in 1921 with her husband, a
general merchandiser, who died a
number of years ago. She was a
member of the Fort Valley Meth¬
odist Church.
The services were conducted by
the Rev. G. N. Rainey, pastor of
the local Methodist Church, the
Rev. J. L. Jones, and the Rev. N.
E. Hodges, pastor of the Fort Val¬
ley Baptist Church.
Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery
in Fort Valley.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by sev¬
en daughters, Mrs. D. J. Parker
of Miami, Fla., Mrs. C. N. Spoot,
Ir., and Mrs. L. W. Spires of At
anta, Mrs. W. P. Daniel, Nashville
Tenn., Mrs. J. W Tonge, of Bain
bridge, and Mrs Charles Zook, Jr.
and Mrs. J. C. Nutt, Jr., of Fort
Valley; five sons, C. W. Wheeler,
J. L. Wheeler, and C. B. Wheeler
of Atlanta, R. G. Wheeler of Mi¬
ami, Fla., and L. Walstein Wheeler
f Fort Valley; and 13 grandchild¬
ren and two great-grandchildren.

Open Next Sunday
The Pine Needles Country Club
swimming pool will be opened for
the coming season on next Sun¬
day, May 19, at 2:30 o’clock.

Monday Night Set
For Ladies Meeting r
The Presbyterian Women of the
church will hold their annual
birthday party at 8:00 p.m. on
Monday night in the educational
building of the church.
The offering goes alternately
each year to a Home Missions pro¬
ject and to a Foreign Missions
project. This year the objective
is twofold: student work in Mexi¬
co and tuberculosis work in Korea.
The Mexican and medical themes
will be carried out in the special
program which will present the
causes.
Refreshments featuring a birth
cake will be served after the pro¬
gram.

| Funeral Held Here Monday For Mrs.
j B. F. Mathews Who Died May 11th
Funeral services were conducted
here Monday kfternon, May 13, at
4:00 o’clock at the Fort Valley
Methodist Church for Mrs. B. F.
Mathews. Mrs. Mathews died in
a Macon Hospital last Saturday
of injuries sustained in an auto¬
mobile accident. She had under¬
gone surgery just prior to her
death.
Mrs. Mathews, who was the for¬
mer Miss Nadine Joyner, a native
of F’ort Valley, had sustained her
injury in an accident which occur¬
red on Wednesday, May 1, near
Dublin. She was enroute to visit
her hu band, who was a patient
W. the Veterans’ Hospital in Dub
lin.
Mrs. Mathews was a member
of St. Andrew’s Epi^aopul Chnrcfc
in Fort Valley.
The services were conducted by
the Rev. A. N. Minor,, pavter of
Tommy Davis of Marshallville
is one of three winners of Union
Bag-Camp Paper Corporation’s
1957 forestry scholarships, it nas
been announced by W. J. Bridges,
Jr. head of the Savannah concern's
Woodlands Division.
The other two winners are James
E. Allen of Savannah and Donald
Lee Boyd of McRae.
Being given for the 12th consec¬
utive year, the scholarships were
offered on a competitive basis to
high school graduates who are res¬
idents of Georgia.
Each grant carries up to $1,
900 a year in tuitions and expen¬
ses for a full four-year forestry
course. The boys will lie able to
.elect any accredit* forestry
.chool in the eastern half of the
country.
Final selection of the three win¬
ners was dine by a scholarship
eommitte composed of Mr. Bridges
and L. W. Ross of Union Bag
Camp, and Dean C. M. Kauffman
of the University of Flrrida’s For¬
estry School, Dean W. B. DeVall
of the Department of Forestry at
Auburn, and Prof. B. F. Grant o'
the University of Georgia’s School
of Forestry.
Tommy Davis will graduate
from the Fort Valley High School
next week with a high scholastic
record.
While in school his other activ¬
ities included football and basket¬
ball teams, the Dramatic Club,
president of the Key Ciub, editor
of the annual, the Glee Club, and
vice president of the Jui ic r Class.
He is the son of Joe T. Davis
of Marshallville.

Set Up In Georgia
For Mrs. Ed Beck
A memorial fund has been es¬
tablished in the name, of Mrs. Bil¬
lie Ray Beck, according to word
received here this week.
In a letter from D. Doherty of
the Georgia Division of the Ameri¬
can Cancer .Society, Mr. and Mrs.
W. M. Beck were advised: ■A
memorial fund hits been establish¬
ed in the name of Mrs. Billie Pay
Beck within the Georgia Division
of the American Cancer Society,
Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia. This fund
and all other contributions to ,t
will be used for educational work
and research, to prevent neediest',
cancer deaths, to find the solution

Mrs. Beck died March 23 at the
age of 23. A registered nurse, she
trained at the Macon Hospital and
worked two years at the Peach
County Hospital.
She was married to Edward P.
Beck, a star basketball player at
the University of Kentucky and a
ministerial student. Mr. Beck has
lead the cancer drive in Kentucky
for this year.

Mr. John C. Cannon, age 44,
died in a Valdosta hopsital follow
