came from Gov. Marvin Griffin.

raise this year. This, he explained,
is a result of a legislative bill
passed earlier this year setting a
minimum salary of $100 a month
for ten months for school bus dri¬
vers. The act was contingent on
whether funds were available.
“It is my happy priviledge to
say today that every driver in
Georgia will receive a raise this
year as a result of this legislation,”
the chief executive declared.
While Gov. Griffin did not say
how much the raise would amount
to, the State Department of Edu
cation explained that $750,000 has
been set aside in this fiscal year’s
budget for carrying cut term* of
the bill.
In his speech, Griffin pointed
jut that Georgia is spending a lar
ger proportion of its income for
education “than any other state
in the nation” He said that 54 per
cent of the outlay for school build
ing during his administration has
been for Negro schools, although
Negroes constitute “only 30 per
cent of the school population.”
Along that line he further said:
“The need for improving Negro
educational facilities was a matter
i of immediate concern when this ad
ministration came into office,
Many Negro children were attend¬
ing one-rocm schoolhouses and
some of the schools had been con¬
demned as fire hazards.
“Today, 141 new schools and
2,847 classrooms have been con¬
structed for Negroes. Plans are
