through the heart of the city —
which officially opened the artery
to the motorists.

“There has been a great deal o'
talk about raising taxes to give
the Highway Department addition

not exactly the true picture.”
Jordan made it clear that he
was not predicting a tax increase.
But if one comes, he added, "it
will be for the purpose of provid¬

partments of State government so
the Highway Department will re

should be receiving under the pre¬

Additional funds would enable
the Highway Department to main¬
tain a “satisfactory” maintenance
program to “protect our $800-mil¬
lion investment in the highway
system,” he said.
