mic Energy CohimissidS, will b«
used to experiment With the possib
ility of controlling insects and dis
ease bacteria in stored grain and
package food through gamma irra
diation.
Describing the process as “an
historic technology which will take
its place alongside other food pro
cessing methods such as canning
freezing and drying,” Sen Talm
adge said “this facility provides
an excellent example of one of
the many present and promising
peaceful uses of atomic energy,
and we are proud of its location in
Savannah."
Pointing out the programs signifi
cance, he declared that “two-thirds
of the world’s population- more
than two billion people - suffer
from hunger and malnutrition, and
a large part of the burden of feed
ing the world is falling on the
United States. Something must
happen, and soon, to meet the wor
Id food problem.” He added:
“Radiation processing of foods
is not expected to be a cure-all,
but it can contribute significatly
to an increased and improved food
supply, by the reduction of food
losses through insect and bacteria
control. It is being undertaken to
extend storage life, control viruses
reduce food spoilage, and in gene
ral to enable a better and more
healthy product to reach consum
ers.”
Sen Talmadge noted that “an
important aspect of the system is
that the food never comes in con
tact with the radiation source and
radioactivity is not added to the
food supply.”
He also stated that there would
be “a full and careful analysis to
assure that irradiated foods are
proved safe beyond a reasonable
doubt, “and the U. S. Food and
Drug Administration would app
rove a specific application of the
process “only after painstaking
research and testing.”

giving of their time and efforts to
help children that cannot help
themselves. I would like to thank
the president of the Hi-Y Club
Don Cook for the kind cooperation
and efforts. Special thanks to the

Their ALSAC director is Joe Far

teen-agers, regardless of the city
we visit, continue to amaze me
with their devotion and energy to
help these little children at St. j
Jude Hospital, at their own ex

by carrying gifts, toys and cloth

home and work twice as hard.”
About 35 Hi-Y teen agers con
