the Korean conflict was that we
were fighting the spread of com
munism. The same is true of the
f .ghting in Viet Nam.
While the nation as a whole was
enjoying unprecede nteki financial
prosperity we made our biggest
mistake. Too many of us placed
too much emphasis on making
i.:;ney, getting a big home, etc.,
a .d not enough emphasis on the
care of our soul. While the popu
lation was growing by leaps and
hounds, church membership was
growing too, but by not nearly so
large a percentage. W T e refused as
a n*uio$.to truly re-arm ourselves
morally and spiritually, and your
world today is the poorer for it.
The greed of too many of us
v’aced the almighty dollar on the
altar to worship, rather than the
living God. Our search for recrea
tion and a “good time” made many
of us neglect to see that you stu
died and knew about the fine and
lasting values of life truly lived.
To your eternal credit let me
say that you and all of your class
mates, and the other members of
your generation in main, are fine

Mr. and Mrs. John Cecil Pen
land of Decatur, Georgia announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Carol Ann Penland, to William
Pokes Massee, son of Mr. David
Lurton Massee of Marshallville,
Georgia, and the late Minnie Pokes
Massee.
The bride-elect is the grand
daughter of Mrs. James Penland
to go out and do battle with the
problems that face you.
Your tomorrow is frought with
danger and pitfalls, make no mis
take about that. You will have
dangled before you to tempt you,
all the things we faced about mak
ing money at any cost and having
a good time no matter what the
moral status of the good time hap
pens to be. You will be asked to
conform to a set mold or pattern,
just the same as the person on
either side of you - a pattern laid
down many times by your govern
ment. You will be badgered on the
Other hand to think too little of
your government, and to trade it
for a mess of pottage.
You are the hope of tomorrow.
While your tomorrow is frought
with pitfalls, it is also filled with
wonderful opportunity. We are
handing you a world wherein scien
ce has provided the means of to
tal destruction or the means of
making the world a truly safe and
decent place. There is space to be
explored and conquered. There are
still worlds in medicine to be tam
ed. There is much to do yet in so
cial reform in all parts of the
world.
Your task is great, but I have
confidence in you and other mem
bers of your generation. My pray
ers are with you all.
If I had any advice to offer to
you it would be very simple. First
I would dare you to be different,
to be what your heart and mind
tell you is right and proper. But
above all I would advise you to
remember always your God. He
is the Master of all, and if you
follow in his footsteps you will
