get it out in the open—
To me, one of the most uixufor
tunate circumstances surrounding
the proposed gun legislation which
is hanging over our heads, it that
it is impossible for the sportsman
to find anyone who will listen
with an open mind, to his point of
view.
The news media by and large
has carried the other side of the
coin frequently and strongly. But
it hasn’t given our side a fair hear
ing. I can’t help but present this
column as a challenge to all, to
view the honest gun-owner’s side
of the question.
Emotional? Yes, it is indeed dif
ficult for me to discuss the situa
tion without emotion. But I dare
say, that in the immediate wake
of any of th.e three great national
tragedies that h^ve occurred with
in recent yeai's, the anti-gun side
has certainly displayed a good deal
of emotion. And I admit, they can
hardly be blamed.
I, too, am emotional about the
alarming increase in crime. I am
in favor of good laws which will
actually relieve the situation.
Recently I read a front page
column in a large Georgia daily
concerning gun laws. I can even
agree in some small parts with
what was written, but I can’t go
along with it all.
For example, the winter said:

Discusses Guns Laws
isterrng a gun when he buys it.”
Perhaps not, depending on cir
cumstances. But it is not the law
ful purchaser we seek to prevent
from committing a murder. It is
the unlawful purchaser, the man
who obtains his weapon solely to
commit a crime. He would object.
He would object so strenuously
that he would not go through legal
channels to buy a gun.
Oddly, he doesn’t object to hav
ing the law, only to obeying it.
Actually, if such laws are passed,
he’s happy ... all this is to his
advantage.
Why has it never been pointed
out strongly in the press that the
gun that killed Martin Luther
King was stolen ? Did a law again
st stealing stop him from getting
a giun? No more, or no less, than
did the law against murder stop
him from killing Doctor King.
No. I cannot believe that laws
will stop violence in crime — that
is laws themselves. It tafkes en
forcement. And it takes morals,
something that is sadly lacking'
these days.
Let’s go back a littJe. Suppose
I had purchased the gun that kill
ed King. I had registered it and
had my fingex-prints taken. My sole
purpose in buying the gun was for
hunting, or perhaps home protec
tion (which would be strictly fool
ish for buying a weapon of that
type.) The gun was stolen, King
was killed, the gun was found. 1
was traced as owner of the gun
before any evidence pointed to
the real killer.
Perhaps I had not realized the
gun had been stolen, or had not
reported it. Obviously I would be
thrown in jail on a murder suspect
charge ... for how long? Until
the evidence pointed to the real
killer.
Would this help solve the crime
any sooner? Would justice be ser
ved Iby throwing suspicion on an
innocent man?
If sensible gun legislation can
be passed that will be a genuine
deterrant to crime, no sensible
sportsman, or the NRA, would
have any objection. Such persons
would be more than happy to see
a good deterrent to crime come a
bout.
But what about the registration
fees? How much would they cost?
How difficult would it be for an
honest man to get a license ?
Would I be “guilty until proven
innocent” befox-e being granted the
right to do what the Constitution
guarantees me the right to do?
Must I “show good cause why I
need a gun?” Must my daughter
be raped before I have good cause ?
Will controls continue to become

898 Students Are
Enrolled At F. V.
State College
An announcement from the Re
gistrar’s Office at Fort Valley
State College states that 898 stu
dents are enrolled in the first ses
sion of summer school which began
June 10 and will continue through
July 18. The number enrolled is
off by ten less students enrolling
for the same period of time in
1967.
One hundred twenty-seven stu
dents enrolled for the first time
with 47 of that number enrolling
in the undergraduate program and
80 in the Graduate Division.
The Graduate Division is again
offeringi free counseling service to
secondary school age youth of the
local community as a part of its
summer program. Services for the
remainder of the session a»e to
include counseling in the areas of
educational and vocational plan

more and more strict? Will regis
tration costs climb out of reason
so that only the rich may own a
gun? (Of course, you realize, that
even a poor man can afford the
price of a gun that he stole, and
somehow evades the registration
cost and red tape). These are the
fears of the sportsman about gun
laws. n
Such laws will not prevent kill
ing. Cain killed Able before guns
were invented. Those who hate,
those who kill, will find other
tools.
Yes, crime must be stopped.
But please let’s not burden law
abiding persons with foolish, rash,
hastily drawn up laws that have
no affect on criminals.
The legitimate gun owner hates
crime, too. Why must he be pic
tured as a criminal? We love our
children and neighbors as much
as anyone.
You’ll pardon us, but we can’t
help but believe if you take this
freedon away from us, other free
doms will soon follow the same
route.
Give us good laws. Not bad ones
We’ll go along then.
