CONTROLLING SCALE INSECTS ON
LARGE CAMELLIAS In Peach
County, many large camellias and
Chinese holly, such as “Burford",
have infestations of scale insects on the
underside of the leaves. These insects
will gradually reduce plant vigor and
the number of healthy leaves on the
plant
Oil emulsion spray is a practical
means of controlling these pests,
Maiathion and Cygon are also
effective. It is necessary to spray
underneath all of the leaves in order to
get control. Oil emulsion sprays have
the advantage of being effective
against scale insects without being a
hazard to you. A hose-end good approach for
homeowners is the applicator
that can lie attached to a garden hose.
Removing the baffle at the end of the
sprayer will allow you to spray high
into large plants,
April is a good month to apply oil
emulsion sprays, when it is not too hot
or too cold.
FERTILIZING CAMELLIAS Many
gardeners over fertilizer camellias,
especially small plants. A general rate
for a mixed fertilizer, such as 10-10-10.
analysis, is one level tablespoonful per
foot of plant height. Apply in March,
April and July.
A yellow-green leaf color on
camellias is often associated with
inadequate nitrogen. However, the
condition could be caused by a poor
root system caused by poor drainage or
root-rot diseases Most a 2 alea-camellia
fertilizers are useful for fertilizing
camellias, but camellias will respond to
general purpose fertilizers.
WHY YOUR PLANTS FAIL - When a
plant is sold at the nursery or garden
center, it is usually in excellent
condition If it fails to grow
satisfactorily, there’s a good chance
that you handled it wrongly during the
first few weeks after bringing it
home. Common errors include failing
to plant it immediately and neglecting
to water the plant while it is still in the
container Some other common
reasons for plant failure, are:
Planting at improper the depth. Be
careful not to set plant too deep or
too shallow Loosen the soil at the
bottom of the planting hole at least 6
inches deep and mix necessary
amendments with it. Then refill to
make sure the plant will sit no lower
than it grew in the nursery.
Inadequate protection — 'Within
only a day or two, the drying effects of

the sun and wind pull moisture out of
the foliage of the plant that is newly set
out. The root ball may become dry even
when the surrounding soil is wet. To
conserve moisture, build a temporary
basin of soil around the plant so that
the root ball can get more water
Lack of organic matter, The addition
of organic matter changes the structure
of problem soils. It makes heavy soils
easier to work with and improves
drainage. In sandy soils, it improves
the ability of the soil to hold plant food
and water. Soil around new plants
