When a train
called the
"General" pulled
to a stop at the
teeming country
station of Big
Shanty early or, the
morning of April
12, 1862, the crew
and most of the
passengers stepped off for a brief
stretch before continuing their trip
northward
No one paid much attention to a
medium-built man who looked like a
peddler as he disembarked from the
tram on the side away from the station
The man walked c asually toward the
engine and stood in open view between
two box cars, pretending to examine a
switch hut actually keeping a furtive
lookout A sentry patrolling about 30
feet away at the Confederate training
center, Camp McDonald, didn't notice
him. Not did the workmen milling
around the Big Shanty yards
No one saw 23 other men also

they would likely be hanged if caught,
and they must have felt exhilaration
and relief when the throttle was eased

Nobody in Big Shanty realized
was amiss until the engine s

sounding an alarm The hijackers had
neglected to cut the bell cord tied to the

This is how the operation later
known as Andrews Raid got underway
As wild as it seemed, the scheme
probably would have succeeded had it
not been for the rain that drenched
north Georgia later that day and the
incredible tenacity of the General’s

by posing as a salesman
He sold his idea to Union officers
encamped in Tennessee He would
organize volunteers to infiltrate enemy
territory as Southern civilians, steal a
train, hcAi 13 bridges between Gibb
Giunty and Chattanooga, and leave
behind a devastated Confederate
supply line
After delaying a day in hopes the
mud from recent rains would dry out,
Andrews and his volunteers — mostly
young soldiers from Ohto — entered
Ginfederate country on foot by twos,
threes and fours. They caught trains to
Marietta where they gathered at the
depot the next morning at 6:30 for the
eight-mile ride to Big Shanty, which
lacked a telegraph facility
The chase began the instant the
train's bell rang out.
Fuller and two other trainsmen burst
out of the station, at first thinking
Southern deserters were on the loose
They ran and stumbled on foot after
the fleeing train for nearly three mites
They pumped an old hand car furiously
for many more miles. Twice they
commandeered southbound trains,
changing each time they encountered
track uprooted by the raiders. They
turned one train around on a siding,
but simply drove the second engine,

released two box cars to wreck his
pursuers, but Fuller and the posse that
had grown along the way merely
pushed the cars ahead of them
Andrews set the third box car afire on a
bridge, but rain doused the flames as it
did in all his attempts at arson.
Had Andrews carried out the raid
the day before as originally planned,
when the rain had held off, the bridges
would presumably have burned and
pursuit would have been stopped
Andrws was also disastrously slowed
down by heavy southbound traffic, and
there had been considerably less on the
11th. The raiders fled into the woods at
the Tennessee line, where their fuel
ran exit But all of them were rounded
up wirhin a week. Andrews and seven
others were evenrually hanged in
Atlanta, and the others escaped or
were swapped for Southern prisoners
Tlie raiders, who were to he awarded
the first Congressional Medal of
Honor, were done in by a combination
of ill fate and Southern pluck
