Plant trees
with care
Now that orders for tree seedlings
for fall and winter planting are being
accepted by the Georgia Forestry
Commission, Crawford-Peach County
Ranger Orvin Bergman has advised
that proper planting procedures should
be followed to aid in the survival rate of
the young trees.
To plant trees successfully, at low
cost, landowners should obtain
professional advice for local conditions,
choose the right species, plant quality
seedlings, protect the seedlings from
nursery through plantings, provide
proper bedding or other site
preparation if needed and plant tree
seedlings in the proper manner.
These are the crucial links in the
tree-planting chain and if you ignore
any of them, Bergman said, your time
and money spent planting seedlings
may well be wasted.
Genetically-improved seedlings are
now being produced in great numbers
and landowmers should consider their
use where possible. They will increase
the timber yield as well as improve the
quality of trees and resistance to
disease.
To order seedlings, landowners are
urged to obtain order blanks from any
Forestry Commission office, the local
SCS, county agent or ASCS office.
Orders, he emphasized, will be filled
on a first-come, first-serve basis
Ranger Bergman said a brex hure on
seedling care and planting instructions
is available at his office.
