I wanted to be like him — very
dedicated and interested in helping
people and never too busy to care. I
never want to be so busy 1 cannot take
timeout to talk to people,"
Asked if there were limes he ever
considered giving up his dream of
becoming a doctor, Amechi laughed,
"Well, u gets tough when your
stomach starts doing funny things to
you right before an important
examination, or when you have stayed
up until 3:00 or 4:00 a m. studying or
spent your whole weekend from Friday
afternoon until Sunday afternoon
studying and didn’t leave the
apartment at all. And for me, tuition
was never easy to come by and I had to
go by the banks for it. So, it was never
an easy road, but right now I just feel
like I’ve been going and going and
piling information into my brairT; and I
am really ready to put all of that
information into action ’ ’
During many of his college years,
Amechi continued to work as an

speech pathologist. It was during
residency in obstetrics that he
realized how demanding his
profession could be. then, the strain
work, medical school, and a
marriage sometimes became
demanding, but he says he never
ever thought about giving any of it up.
Amechi received his M.D.
from Wayne State Medical School
Detroit and completed his
and residency in nearby
Hospital. At Providence, 4,000
a year are delivered in the
delivery room and another 100 in
nearby birthing room. In a very
time, the young doctor had plenty
experience at bringing babies into
world.
The birthing room concept parti
cularly interests the doctor and he
hopes to establish a similar program
here, if enough interest is shown. A
birthing room is a home-like room
where the mother and father may be
joined by the children or other
members of the family during the
actual birth. In many large cities,
including Atlanta, birthing rooms have
become a very popular alternative to a
hospital delivery room.
Dr. Amechi says that mothers who
have no serious complications and who
desire a more relaxed atmosphere are
night’s pageant will go on to Atlanta to
compete for the state title.

excellent candfHates for the birthing
rooms. The rooms are always situated
Jn 0 r near the hospital so that if there
are ever any unexpected compli
cations, help can be there wirhin five
minutes. For the families who choose
to use birthing rooms, Dr. Amechi says
a special experience awaits. "It creates
a special bond. A lot of women find it
very, very accommodating because it is
a special event that everyone can share
in," he explained,
The Amechis decided to move to
Fort Valley after visiting the town and
talking with former Peach County
Hospital Administrator George Kara
halis several times, "l was under a lot
of pressure to sign a contract in
Atlanta, but while I was there, I heard
about Fort Valley and George
Karahalis really impressed upon me
the need for an Ob/Gyn here. The
potential for growth in this area is
really tremendous, and I felt 1 could
help people more here than I could in a
big city," he said.
The dixtor said he had assumed he
would practice in Chicago or some
other large city until he was in his
residency. He and his wife began
discussing it and came up with the idea
of moving away from the city. "We
thought that perhaps we could settle
down in a little town that was not too
far from the big city. We like the peace
and tranquility and the comfort of a
small town. The air is cleaner and we
thought we would be more comfortable
and happier in a small town," he
explained.
Amechi says he can understand that
women drive to Macon or Warner
Robins for Ob/Gyn services because
they feel they will be getting more
up-to-date care or because they feel the
medical facilities have more modern
equipment, but he says that Peach
County Hospital now has ‘‘everything

here that you will find in large
hospitals in Atlanta, Detroit, Macon or
anywhere else. We have the latest in
high-tech fetal monitoring equipment
that we use for high-risk babies. We
can predict when they are in danger, so
therefore we can deliver that baby
before there is any danger to the baby
or mother. It is something that gives
the mother and baby a lor of help and
makes the parents a lot more secure,"
he said.
In his office, Amechi has all of the
latest equipment needed in an Ob/Gyn
office. Fie can perform amnio-centesis,
a procedure which detects abnormai
ities in a very young baby’s
development. He also has new
equipment which employs a magnified
lens used to detect cervical cancer in its
earliest stages.
The doctor recently opened his office
located on East Church Street behind
Avera’s Drug Store. He says he is just
about finished moving into his new
home and office and is only awaiting
one important thing —- the arrival of
his wife! Gail Amechi is expected to tie
up the remaining few details in
Michigan and head south as soon as
possible. Once that is accomplished,
Dr Amechi says he expects to feel
right at home,
