The weather was perfect Sunday
morning, September 24, as the
Powersville Methodists enjoyed
another homecoming. Even the gnats
stayed away.
That the Powersville homecoming
has become quite an event is evidenced
by the fact that dignitaries from all
over the county never miss it. The
congregations at the Fort Valley and
Byron Methodist churches were
smaller as part of their usual crowd
came to Powersville.
PreacKing at the Sunday morning
service was the Rev. James 0.
Langston, a former pastor of the
church. A special piano solo was given
by Mrs. Virginia Murdock. Bud
Cooper, official “greeter" of the

running back inside a burning building

Wright was at a child care center
checking about his own son when a
woman came running across the street
saying her house was on fire. As
Wright looked across the street, he
said the house Just suddenly went up
in flames At the same time, he saw
the young boy running up the front
steps of the house and going toward
the front door Officer Wright ran
across the street and grabbed the boy
just as he reached the doorway. The
hov was burned by the intense heat
and nearby flames, but was treated
and released at a local hospital

back inside a burning house, thinking
they can hide or can find their parents.
even when there is no one left inside
the house
Chief Buddv Jackson said this is a
major cause of death for children in
fire-related accidents The chief said
the youngster Wright rescued could
very well have been trying to get back
inside for those same reasons. Had he
made it back inside the blaring house,
he very likelv would not have made it
back outside without being seriously
injured or even killed

The service was opened by the
church’s pastor, Rev. Charles B.
Vamell. He announced that beginning
Sunday evening, his brother, the Rev.
Ricky Vamell, will preach at revival
services,
Rev. Langston told his appreciative
audience that God speaks to us in many
and different ways. To Moses God was
a burning bush. Langston said that
God also speaks to us no matter how
old we are and at that point he referred
to the rich heritage of the Powersville
Methodist Church. He said that life
begins anytime you have a personal
encounter with Christ. “He can use all
of us from the youngest to the oldest, ’ ’
said Langston. “However, we cannot
rest on the past," he said.
The citation praised Officer Wright
for acting “without regard for his own
safety” in preventing the child from
entering the burning house. It

Chief Songleader Bud Cooper really seems to be taking his job seriously
Sunday morning. Cooper said that be had decided to go against popular de¬
mand and not sing a solo. Cooper is known as the official “greeter” of the
church, and that's what he%id before launching into song.
