The Peach County defense has played admirably all season, 1982 season. Here Darin Mitchell (52) and Darius Gibson (42)
but had their best night last week, recording the school’s first put a quick stop on a Jones County ball carrier.

Coming the Trojan’s first shutout
in 24 games, Peach County Head
Coach Pat Horton had nothing but
praise for his defense, as the visiting
team held the Greyhounds at bay in a
14-0 win last Friday night.
"You have to be pleased with the
effort of the defense," Horton said.
“At times they stopped Jones cold,
and at times they bent a little but
didn’t break. ’’
Horton’s game plan appeared to
have been aimed at keeping as much
pressure as possible off of a defense
that has performed extremely well all
season, despite having to be on the
field a long time while the offense
sputtered,
"I don’t know if you’d call it exactly
conservative. We just felt like we
should run it right at them until they
stopped us, and keep away from
fumbles and interceptions. We wanted
to mix in the pass a lirtle, but we didn’t
do a very good job with it.”
"The offense moved the ball well at
times without doing anything fancy,
but I was not pleased with our
attempts at passing. We need to have
the passing game working whether we
need it six times or 26 times a game.”
As for the obvious question about
the effect of winning, Horton was
visibly pleased, but pointed out that
there were areas that needed more
work, so “pleased” was a better word
than "satisfied.”
' ‘Any time you need a win as badly
as we did, you have to be pleased, but
not satisfied, because we did have
some areas that could have been much
better. f t
"1 think we should have had at least
seven more points, and possibly 14,
but you have to give Jones a lot of
credit. They played better and were
better motivated than we had seen
them on film, except for the Jackson
game.”
The Leader-Tribune, Fort Valley. Georgia. Thursday. October 11, 1 984
Asked about key plays in the game,
Horton pointed to the two intercep
tions by Kevin Towns on defense, and
Terry Walker’s 50-yard run, which set
up the clinching touchdown.
“Kevin’s interceptions stopped
potential drives for Jones, and Terry's
run set us up for the clincher. I think
after the run, everyone felt like we
would score and knew that as soon as
we did, we had it wrapped up."
"I was also very pleased with the
running of Deon Maddox. I can
remember at least half a dozen carries
that he seemed to be on the verge of
breaking into the clear. He’s running
now like we know he can run.”
The coach said his team would work
hard on two areas that didn’t
particularly show up well against the
Greyhounds.
“We have to do a better job of pass
blocking, something that we haven’t
done very well for several weeks. Also,
our special teams didn't do a very good

job. They came close to breaking two
kickoffs on us, and the only time they
kicked to us, we didn’t return it at all. ’ ’
As to the recurring subject of
injuries, the Trojans seem to be in
much better shape now. Maddox in
practically at full speed for the first
time all year, tackle Steve Allan is back
in the line-up, and they were to have
gotten word from the doctor Tuesday
on Terry LoWe.
"We need Terry Lowe in the
backfield, and we feel like the doctor is
going to turn him loose,” Horton said.
Finally, regarding the overall effect
of a win on his team, the coach said,
"We’ve been going out on Monday to
practice for five weeks now without
having won the previous Friday. We
kept telling them that if they continued
to work hard, they would win, but it
just wasn’t happening. You can only
tell them that for so long, so maybe
this will make them work even
harder. ’ ’
