FVSC blasts Alabama St
by Marvin Crafter
The Alabama State University band
played it's rendition of the popular
blues tune “Down Home Blues' as
they saw their team fall to 0-5 at the
hands of the Fort Valley State College
Wildcats 42-16. The Wildcats were
sparked by a well conditioned
offensive unit led by Kevin Parker,
Dale Casey and David Moods
Coupled with the outstanding special
team play of DuVaal Calloway and
David Monds, the Wildcats handed
the Alabama State Hornets its share of
the blues.
The Wildcats got under way late in
the first quarter after one of
Calloway’s five punt returns deep in
Hornet territory. Parker waisted little
time as he hit wide receiver David
Monds on a four yard pass for the
game's first score. That score came
with 3:03 left in the first quarter.
Kevin Oliver, perfect on the day, hit
the first of six points after and the Fort
Valley team led 7*0.
The Alabama State team had the
Westfield shut out 14-0
by Chip Washington
There was a desperate need for rain
in Middle Georgia Friday night, but on
this homecoming night at Westfield
Schools, the Lord made the weather
perfect for football. The largest crowd
ever to see a homecoming game at
Westfield was on hand to see a battle
royal between the Hornets and
Stratford Academy’s Eagles. Stratford
won 14-0 on two defensive plays in the
fourth quarter in a classic bruising
battle between two old foes.
Paul Storey and Terry McDowell
served as Hornet co-captains and
elected to receive. Franklin McDowell
received the kick and lugged it back to
the 25 to begin this nose to nose battle,
Franklin McDowell picked up 6 yards
in two carries but Storey was sacked
for a 5 yard loss on the first series of
plays. Gary Hunter punted to
Stratford's 44. John Pearson and Dan
Daniel greeted the Eagles first
running play for no gain. On the next 2
plays the Eagles moved 43 yards to the
Hornets 37. A holding penalty moved
the Eagles back to their own 47 to give
the Hornets breathing room. Two
passes and a running play later only
netted three yards for the Eagles. The
Hornets fumbled a punt but Lee
Watson alertly fell on it at their 31 yard
line. Storey promptly set up camp and
hit Terry McDowell with an 11 yard
pass but that was as far as the Hornets
could move and punted to the Eagles
28 .
Stratford was on the go as they
host Americus
by Tim Wilson
The Peach County Trojans face a
difficult Friday night as they face the
powerful Americus Panthers, The
Panthers have been a traditional
powerhouse for many years domina
ting Region 3-AAA. They finished the
1983 season with a 12-1 record. The
Panthers own a 3-2 record this season
defeating Coffee County, Tri-County,
and Dublin. They were defeated by a
powerful Cairo team and Dougherty.
When asked about his fust
impression of Americus, Coach Pat
Horton said, "Potentially, the same
old thing comes from Americus every
year. They are as good as they want to
be at any given time.” Horton
emphasized, "Their record is not an
indication of how good they are. They
lost the two games by a total of six

score before DuVaal Calloway entered
the Fort Valley record book with an 84
yard punt return to score with 1:2)
remaining in the first quarter. With
Oliver’s point after, the Wildcats lead
was 144) Calloway’s return
replaces the 1982 effort of 70 yards for
the longest punt return and 42 yards
for the longest punt return for a
touchdown set by Willie Canady in
1982.
The second quarter was barely
under way when Fort Valley middle
linebacker Andre Green intercepted a
Hornet pass on the 12 yard line and
returned it for a touchdown with 11:35
left in the first half. Oliver’s kick
ended the Wildcats first half scoring at
21 points.
The half ended with die Hornet
place kicker Archie Moore connecting
on a 23 yard field goal to give Alabama
State a little hope as tlx scoreboard
read 21-3 with 2:48 left in the half. But
the half was not yet over. As the half
stomped down to the Hornet 15 before
Mark King and Gary Hunter stopped a
fourth and two yards to go for a first
down play, cold turkey. Stratford
attempted a field goal which sailed
wide right to end the first quarter
knotted at 0-0.
Sam Pearson picked up 8 yards in
two carries but Storey was stopped far
no gain causing a punt. Stratford’s
offense was on the move again to the
Hornet 45. A heavy pass rush by Mark
King, Lee Watson and John Pearson
resulted in two incomplete passes and
forced the Eagles to punt,
On the second play from scrimmage,
Storey hit Gary Hunter with a 38 yard
pass to the Eagles 40. Storey was then
sacked three times and forced back to
the Hornet 47, forcing yet another
punt,
A swarming-stingy Hornet defense
took over and met last years state
champs head on. Two Eagle running
plays gained three yards and a screen
pass lost 2 as Scott Smith made a
picture perfect tackle on third down,
Stratford punted to the Hornets 22.
Storey was letter perfect on target
with a quick pass to Terry McDowell
for 10 yards. Sam Pearson caugh ta9
yard pass and Storey scampered t to the
50 for another first down. Dan Daniel
was up the middle for seven to the
Eagle 43 but that was where it stopped
on two incomplete passes followed to
end the first half.
A determined Stratford team hit the
points.
As everyone knows, Friday night is
the night we pay tribute to Mr.
Anderson. Coach Pat Horton said,
"We are all aware it is a special night
for Mr. Anderson. The players will all
try to do good to honor Mr.
Anderson. Horton went on to say,
They trill try a little harder to shew
how they feel about Mr. Anderson, * *
The Trojans are coming off a 14k0
victory over Jones County last Friday
night. When asked about the victories
effect on the Trojans, Gn fK - h Pat
Horton said, “I’d rather be coming off
a victory coming into die Americus
game. It has given us a shot in the
arm. Horton added, "It (the win) helps
us in practice as we prepare for
Americus, knowing we have a chance
to whip them if we play good.”
wound down, Kevin Parker had one of
his passes intercepted and returned to
the )0 yard line with : 31 seconds to go
in the half. The Hornets set up the
< < Big Ben” play with all of their
receivers to the right of the line only to
see Fort Valley’s Greg Lloyd end all
hopes with an 18 yard quarterback sac.
The Alabama State Hornets stormed
out of the dressing room to start the
second half with an impressive 80 yard
drive to pull to within two touchdowns
of tying the game at 11:32 cf the third
quarter. The Fort Valley lead was now
21-9. But from that point, Fort Valley’s
special team led by David Monds and a
defensive secondary led by Andre
Green, DuVaal Calloway, and Eddie
Anderson cook over.
Monds kept the Hornets deep in
their territory with four punts that
landed inside the 20 yard line with two
coming to rest inside the Alabama
State 10. With poor field position
throughout the third period, the
Alabama coaches saw three more of
their pass attempts picked off by Fort
filed to start the second half. In six
running plays, the Eagles flew almost
untouched to the Hornets two yard
line. A lesser team would have folded
their tents and silently faded away into
the night, but the Hornets aren’t made
that way. They not only stopped
Stratford, but forced a 28 yard field
goal attempt which failed. You
couldn't say enough good things about
the Hornet defenders except to say
they are tenacious. John bishop, Hank
Bush, Dan Daniel, Franklin McDowell,
Lee Watson, Gary Hunter, Mark King,
John Schell, Newt Hiley, Richard
Washington, Terry McDowell, Chris
Small, Danny Ray, Chris Faircloth,
Kevin Ware and company absolutely
played their hearts out against the
larger-more experienced Eagles.
The Hornet offense started from
their own 20 and showed signs of
movement. Chris Small made an
acrobatic catch at the Hornet 37. Sam
Pearson was good for 7 more yards but
a clipping penalty took the life out of
any hopes for a drive. Gary Hunter
punted 37 yards to Stratford's 43.
Stratford’s power machine cranked
up traain. In eight running plays
Stratford was on the Hornet one yard
line and knocking on the touchdown
door. On fourth down and one to go for
a touchdown, those men in Green and
Gold stuffed the Eagles running play
for no gain. The third quarter came to
a halt with the score still knotted at
0 - 0 .
It was wedge time for the Hornets as
On offense, Americus will run a
conglomerant of plays. The Trojans
may see everything known to football.
The Panthers will use a lot of set in
dose ball games, they throw a good
bit. According to the scouting report,
they have the potential to do a lot of
throwing.
Also, the Panthers offensive line is
much bigger than the Trojans. Their
center weighs 220. Their tackles weigh
213 and 275, and their guards weigh
243 and 220. So, the Trojans defense
will have a tough task Friday night.
The 3-3 and 6-2 are the base
defensive formations of the Panthers.
They have shown potential to start
sending said, linebackers. Coach Pat Horton
"The stunt will make it difficult
to know where to block, and who to
block. M
Valley defensive players. All three
interceptions foiled Hornet scoring
threats with Andre Green picking up
his wx vuvl and Eddie Anderson and
DuVaal Calloway pulling in their first.
The Third quarter ended with Fort
Valley’s Darnen Lowe going over from
two yards out to give the Wildcats a
28*9 lead.
The fourth quarter saw the Alabama
State Coaches playing a game of
musical quarterbacks as nothing
seemed to work for their offensive
unit. Their efforts paid off with only six
fourth quarter points while Fort Valley
capitalized on two more Hornet errors.
Kevin Parker ended his day with a one
yard run for a score following a fumble
recovery deep in Hornet territory,
And, following an unsuccessful Hornet
on side kick, Fort Valley third team
quarterback, Chris Hill, found Cecil
Howard alone in the end zone with :12
seconds left in the game. Fort Valley
wins 42-16 after Oliver added his last
point after for the day.
they attempted to escape from their
own rndzone. Storey had his bell rung
after gaining 5 yards. Newt Hiley
subbed for Storey and picked up a first
down to the 12. Sam Pearson was good
for 4 yards but Storey was sacked bock
to the 3 yard line. With fourth down
and a bunch to go Gary Hunter lifted a
49 yard punt to Stratford’s 45.
Stratford apparently lost its taste for
victory as the Hornets would not let
them move forcing a punt. On the first
play from scrimmage, Stratford picked
off a Hornet pass at the 6 yard line.
Two plays later the Eagles struggled
over for a touchdown and added the
PAT for a 7-0 lead.
In a bit of razzle-dazzle, Newt Hiley
took the Eagle kickoff and lateralled it
across field to John Pearson who
almost broke it for a touchdown. One
last defender brought him down at the
Hornet 35. On the third play from
scrimmage Storey dropped back to
pass, but the ball was knocked
skywards and a Stratford defender
intercepted and ran it down to the one
yard line. On the next play, Stratford
scored and added the extra point to
make the final score 14-0.
Assistant Coach, Mike Campbell,
stated that the defense was superb on
this night when the offense sputtered.
This week the Hornets are off for a
much needed rest. On Oct. 19, the
Hornets start their drive for the region
title against Flint River Academy. The
Hornets stand 3-3 on the season.
The Panthers special teams are also
prepared. They have a good punter
and field goal kicker. They also have
good people on their kickoff team.
In order to defeat Americus, Coach
Pat Horton said, "I think we have to
play an errorless game. Also, we have
got to play a conservative game, but
make sure we don't get too
conservative and give them good field
position.” Horton emphasized the
feet, “We can’t fumble, throw the
interception, or give form good field
position or kickoff and punts. • i
