When the Indian baby is born. . .
Although the expectant Indian mother had the luxury of frequent
visits to her medicine man and the companionship of her husband
and family during her pregnancy, things were much different when
the baby was born. It was then that she ri
became "a loner,” totally isolated from I I I I
husband, family and friends. She was I
even required to leave her own house. I
The period of isolation would be
spent in a small, one room hut. This I ~S|H I
special hut was positioned well away ^ * CjH * I
from the main house. This place was I
reserved for "things most personal" I I
pertaining to women (childbirth and I
menstruation). Jk \
The actual delivery of Indian .babies '
was alone. up However, to the mother and the mother dfSgm A
although this was the » -
"official" rule, in many Southeastern Maxwell iYldAVVC Duke w
Indian tribes, several older women
assist (usually relatives) would be present to Indian Footprints
in the delivery if unexpected
problems occurred.
Immediately after the baby was delivered, it would be cleaned and
dipped in cold water. Then, the skin would be anointed with bear oil
before the child was placed on its appropriate blanket.
The type blanket which was used depended upon the sex of the
child. If a boy, a panther's skin was used. If a girl, a deerskin would
be utilized. (This technique of sex identification is not so different
from our modern day society's way of using color to denote the sex
of a child - blue for a boy and pink for a girl.)
However, the Indians' use of an appropriate animal skin was more
than a subtle signal denoting the sex of the child. It was also a
foreshadowing of the role to which the child would follow in adult life,
Through the skin blanket, the Indian male baby was symbolically
cast in the parallel role of the panther. The panther was a powerful
hunter who preyed upon deer. He hunted and took what he wanted.

Work. Everybody works. But
why work all that hard in the
kitchen when it's not necessary?
With colder weather slowly
getting down this way and
darkness seems right after lunch,
there has got to be some "slack
time" for everybody.
I'm about to make some
statements that I wish to make very
clear that they are personal
preference only. As long as that is
understood, I’m gonna let it ride.

The Indian female was similarly cast in the parallel role of the
deer. Just as the docile, defenseless and lovely deer was destined
to be "hunted" and “taken" by the panther, so would it be with baby
when she reached puberty.
As soon as the baby was wrapped in the appropriate skin, the
mother had other traditions and duties to consider. First of all, any
Dlood, tissue and placenta resulting from the birth had to be properly
disposed of.
The by-products of child birth were viewed with great
apprehension and mystery. They thereby demanded special
attention. In some areas of the southeast, the placenta was buried in
the front yard of the baby’s home. It was placed under the large
wooden mortar in which the family's corn was pounded and cracked,
In other areas of the Southeast (Cherokee territories in particular),
the placenta was carried over at least two mountain ridges and then
buried in a secluded spot.
With the placenta buried, the mother focused upon the baby. Most
Southeastern Indian others began feeding immediately. However, in
some culture areas, she would not suckle it until after the baby was
four days old. Once the child began breast feeding, it could continue
tor as long as desired - in some instances, almost until adulthood
(unless the mother had another baby).
Not having access to large amounts of cloth for use as diapers,
the Indians resorted to the use of other absorbent materials. A
favorite, where available, was Spanish moss.
Strategically placed, a wad of Spanish moss served the needs of
both "changee" and "changer" quite well. The moss was held in
place by being snuggly tucked under the child who was firmly
strapped to a flat cradle board,
The cradle board, upon which the child would be continuously
strapped for its first year of life, also served the "diaper needs" of the
baby. The board had a "toilet hole" cut at the appropriate place to
help promote sanitary conditions. The hole probably also aided in
the changing of the Spanish moss "diapers" because the baby
would not have to be removed from the board for "changes."

• Spotlight on: Library Card Sign Up Month
Don't let November get by without getting your library card.
This is signup month and every member of the family is
encouraged to register for a card or update their old one if it
has expired. It is quick and absolutely free and is probably the
best gift you could give anyone, including yourself. Make a
library card the first item on your shopping list this season.
And remember that everyone who registers for a library card
or checks out material can put their name in the box to win a
rocking chair next month. Visit either the Byron Public or
Thomas Public Library to see the rockers on display.
The World of James Thurber and The Diary of Anne Frank
are two of the most recent additions to the library's collection
of over 80 books on audio cassette. These books on tape are
the perfect companion to take along for holiday travel. Byron
library users can select from a list of titles and have them
delivered the next day.
Friday marks the birthday of Samuel Langhorne Clemens,
better known as Mark Twain. Author of The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and The Prince and
the Pauper, he was born 155 years ago at Florida, Missouri.
He was quoted as saying, "I came in with Halley's Comet in
1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with
it.” Mark Twain died just one day after the comet made its
closest approach to the sun.
