by Susan Nelson
County Extension Agent
Take this simple quiz to see if
you can save on the amount of en¬
ergy it takes to live comfortably in
your mobile home.
1. Is your mobile home situ¬
ated with narrow' ends facing east
and west? 2. Has additional insula¬
tion been added under the floor? 3.
Are windows, door, vent pipes, roof
and flooring seams caulked or
weatherstripped? 4. Do you have
storm windows and doors? 5. Do
you have awnings to control the
sun hitting windows and other glass
areas? 6. Do you keep heating and
cooling systems maintained and in
good working order? 7. Do you
need to buy more efficient heating
and cooling equipment? 8. Is the
electric hot water heater wrapped
with insulation? 9. Does your mo¬
bile home have a light colored exte¬
rior? 10. Is your mobile home land¬
scaped to save energy?
If you answered yes to all 10
questions, your mobile home is a
winner in the war on energy waste.
If you answered no, you can cut
your energy bills by correcting the
problem.
Here are some additional con¬
servation measures to make your
mobile home a more comfortable
one.

dows and doors, use plastic sheeting
(about 4 millimeters thick) to put
over outside windows. Hold it in
place with pressure-sensitive tape.
Remove the plastic at the end of the
cold season and install it again next
year. *If your duct system is ex¬
posed under the floor, wrap it with
a minimum of R-4 insulation.
Adding insulation to water pipes
and tanks also reduces heat loss.
*Place skirling around the mo¬
bile home to reduce heat loss
through the floor and to protect
pipes. Provide front and rear vent
space in skirting to allow air circu¬
lation, to prevent moisture accumu¬
lation and to help the heating sys¬
tems' air combustion intake.
*If your floors continue to be
cold, add carpet and padding. They
also have insulation value.
■"Check the cracks and open¬
ings where cold air can enter and
warm air can escape. Remember,
some older mobile homes have
openings designed to help the walls
breathe. These may take away from
the efficiency of the walls but if
they are closed off, moisture will
accumulate in the walls and cause
structural damage.
