Soaking stamps off paper
by Warner J. Raines
There are times when a stamp
should stay exactly where it is
found, on its cover. The cover you
have today may be the postal his¬
tory of tomorrow. Often, some of
the most common-looking covers,
ones that you might think would
make an excellent source for obtain¬
ing a fine used copy of a stamp, are
the ones that should never be de¬
stroyed by soaking the stamp.
Once you decide to remove a
stamp from its cover, you will find
one of the most enjoyable and
somewhat challenging parts of
stamp collecting is soaking that
stamp from its paper. This week's
PHILATELIC CORNER reviews
some of the basics of soaking
stamps off paper.
You should select a container
in which all the stamps you wish
to soak will fit A large, clean, rela¬
tively shallow container is best Be
sure there is no dirt, grease, oil, or
any other residue in the container.
Stamps should always be
soaked in cold water, not hot. Cold
tap water, or water that has risen to

room temperature is the safest to
use. Some inks dissolve or smear
in warm or hot water and, while
those inks are the exception, the
safest thing is to use cold water.
Place the container with water
on the table where you will be
working. You may want to read
some philatelic literature for about
an hour as you wait for your cold
tap water to come close to room
temperature.
Begin by placing a small hand¬
ful of stamps on paper into the wa¬
ter. Never soak more stamps than
you can comfortably process at one
time.
Sometimes it will seem to take
a long time for the stamps to sepa¬
rate from paper, but the best advice
is to be patient. Most stamps
placed in cool water will eventually
separate from their paper backings.
Once again, do not soak too
many items at once, so that you
can remove them from the water as
soon as possible after they have
separated from the paper. If stamps
remain in water too long, they tend
to lost their sizing and become
limp.
After your stamps have sepa¬
rated from their paper backings,
they should be lifted carefully out
of the water and placed face down to
dry. By placing your stamps face
down, you avoid the problem to
their sticking to the drying surface
in case any gum remained on their
backs. Many collectors place wet
stamps on newspaper, which can
sometimes cause the black
newsprint to transfer to the drying
stamps. Paper towels, sheets of
white construction paper or poster
board, or any other unprinted, non¬
colored paper surface are safer
choices than sheets from the daily
newspaper.
After the stamps are dry, prop¬
erly store or mount them in stamp
albums or stock books, or neatly
place them in glassine envelopes.
A general rule in soaking is
that where the water becomes too
cloudy, discolored, dirty, or

"gummy," it should be changed, to
that the next group of stamps on
paper may be placed in a fresh bath.
Some collectors change their
soaking water frequently, since the
accumulated gum and miscellaneous
types of dirt can dry onto the sur¬
face of the stamps, detracting from
the attractiveness and value of the
stamp. Always soak stamps in
clean water.
One of the most common
problems encountered while soak¬
ing stamps is the transfer of unde¬
sired printing or color to the stamps
themselves.
The ink of heavy black hand
stamps or machine cancellations
will sometimes run, causing poten¬
tial danger in the stamp bath. Red,
magenta, or purple canceling inks
often run more easily than black.
This can cause the stamps in the
bath to pick up the color of that
ink, discoloring many or all of the
stamps in the bath.
Stamps with such heavy black
or questionable color cancellations
should always be handled separately
to avoid contaminating the rest of
the stamps.
Stamps that are on colored pa¬
pers, such as red, green, and blue
envelopes used for greeting cards,
should never be soaked in the same
bath as stamps on white paper.
These items should be carefully
sorted out prior to soaking and
soaked separately.
Using cold water to soak
stamps on colored paper will min¬
imize the paper dissolving and
forming of dye in the bath. Such
contaminated water then dyes all
stamps in the bath the color of the
paper that dissolved. It is probably
not worthwhile soaking very com¬
mon stamps off red, yellow, and
green greeting card envelopes, be¬
cause they create instant dye bath
when stamps affixed to them are
placed in water.
If there are stamps you wish to
soak off colored papers, use a small
dish for an individual bath for the
stamp. carefully, and
Watch the stamp
as soon as it has lifted off the pa
per, remove it quickly and place it
in another clean, cold water bath.
This will remove the balance of the
glue, and hopefully any traces of
dye from the colored paper that may
already have started to discolor the
stamp. LUCK and have FUN
GOOD
soaking your stamps. Common
sense and the previously given
guidelines will assure you that you
do not damage your stamps and
covers by unknowingly mishan¬
dling them.
