things recycled, 78% is paper. Met
als follow at 9.3%, then glass at
6.4%, plastics .8% and all other
materials at 5.5%. However, the
contents of our landfills by volume
is 34% paper, 12.1% metals, 2%
glass, 19.9% plastics and 32% oth
ers. We need to recycle more paper
and other recyclables to cut back on
what is going into the Peach
County landfill.
There are over 50 different
grades of waste paper. Because all
paper is not the same, a grade sys
tem is used to specify quality stan
dards. Paper recovered for recycling
must be separated according to grade
classification, and here are the main
categories.
Newsprint. Mostly old news
papers contributed by private resi
dences.
Corrugated. Includes old corru
gated containers used to ship mer
chandise to stores, other businesses

establishments. Includes food pack
aging, colored papers, envelopes
and other paper products not classi
fied elsewhere. ,
Regardless of grade, recovered
paper must be clean and usable if a
business or community expects to
sell it to paper recyclers. Paper con
taminated by foods, liquids, adhe
sives or other foreign substances,
such as envelopes with plastic win
dows, are difficult and costly to re
cycle. Also, some paper products,
such as magazines, product catalogs
and slick newspaper inserts can't be
recycled in this area,
