Braves should be
better , but you've
heard it all here
before, right?
OK, sports fans, it is now
March, which means it's time for
me to tell you what I tell you in
March every year without fail:
The Atlanta Braves will be
better this year.
Yes, I know, you’ve heard
that line here before... like every
March for the past seven years.
For the sake of a small shred of
credibility, let's do it this way:
first, I’ll tell you why they should
be better, then I'll tell you what
can go wrong (Murphy's Law,
and we don't mean Dale).
The 1991 Braves should be
better because...
- Dale Murphy is finally
gone, meaning the rest of the
team can no longer sit back and
wait for Murphy to do something
(which he rarely did the past
three years); Terry
- Third baseman
Pendleton and first baseman
Sid Bream give them Gold
Glove infielders at the corners;
- Shortstop Andres Thomas
is being handed the job and
promises a better attitude and
more consistency; the
- Greg Olsen will be
most complete catcher Atlanta
has had since moving from
Milwaukee;
- Ronnie Gant and Dave
Justice will hang up MVP num¬
bers in the outfield;
- Lonnie Smith has one
more .300 season in him;
- Jeff Treadway will be his
usual solid self at second base;
- Mike Stanton is healthy
and will combine with Kent
Mercker for the best closing tan¬
dem in Atlanta in years;
- John Smoltz, Tom Glavine
and Charlie Leibrandt will com¬
bine for 45 wins;
- Steve Avery has arrived
and will win 12 and strike out
200 ;
- Pete Smith is healthy and
will win 10 as the fifth starter;
- Someone (anyone) will
pitch effectively in middle relief.
That's 12 factors that will
make the Braves winners. Each
of them can turn five 1990 loss¬
es into 1991 wins. But wait.
It won't happen if...
- No one assumes Murphy's
role as veteran team leader;
- Pendleton and Bream
don't contribute some offense to
go with that defense;
- Thomas is his old incon¬
sistent, sulking self;
- Olsen's 1990 season was
a flash and Mike Heath is the
catcher by June;
- Gant and Justice slump
and combine for less than 40
homers and 120 RBI's;
- Lonnie Smith is finished
and Glenn Wilson winds up the
everyday left-fielder;
much - time Treadway hurting; spends too
- Stanton's shoulder blows
out again; Smotlz
- gets frustrated,
Glavine gets traded for a left
fielder and Leibrandt goes on
the DL;
- Avery is still immature and
can’t aet anyone out;
- Smith's arm is shot;
- Middle relief is the same
as usual, that is, the outfielders
need hard hats.
Combine those 12 and you
start Falcons. looking Speaking forward to the
of which...
Why didn't I mention Deion
Sanders?
Because I’m tired of hearing
about him.
Because I can't believe the
Braves will pay him $650,000
and don't want to pay John
Smoltz $400,000.
Because it should be a rule
that career .170 hitters can't
wear jewelry.
Because the rule book says
you can’t steal first base, SO
what good is his 4.27 speed?
Because I hope the fans in
Richmond throw rocks at him in
the outfield.
And finally, because as
badly as the Braves need a
leadoff hitter with impact-typ e
speed, and the ideal place fc or
such a person is center field
with Gant moving to left, this no¬
class jerk ain’t the answer.

Wildcats to face
Lemoyne-Owen in
SIAC's first round
Fort Valley State’s Wildcats
will be in post-season action this
week as they will take on the magi
cians of Lemoyne-Owen in the first
round of the SIAC tournament.
Tip-off time for the 58th edi¬
tion of the post-season classic will
be 1:00 March 7 at Morris Brown
College. The finals, to be televised
live on Black Entertainment
Network, will be March 9 at 8:00 at
Ga. Tech's Alexander Memorial
Coliseum.
The "Cats qualified for the
tournament as the second seed by
finishing 7-8 in the SIAC East,
Lemoyne-Owen got into the "big
party" by finishing third in the
SIAC West.
Leading FVSC into action will
be Julius Fritz and Kevin Simmons,
Fritz, who is averaging 24.6 points
per game, will be playing his last
game in the SIAC this week, clos
ing out a productive career for the
Wildcats.

13-15 boys' fee will be SI7.00.

certificate before registering.

himself as one of the top post play
ers in the league in his first season
at FVSC. Simmons takes an aver
age of 18.6 points and 11.6
rebounds per game into the tourney.
This will mark the third time
FVSC and LMOC have met on the
hardwood. Lemoyne won the first
contest 118-114 in Memphis after
bolting out to a 62-46 halftime
advantage, and they took the sec
ond game in Fort Valley 95-91
behind the off-the-bench play of
Brian Weaver. Weaver went six for
six in the final five minutes of play
to help the Magicians get the win.
FVSC will be hoping that
momentum will be on their side
going into the game. The "Cats
won a thrilling 105-100 game in
Atlanta against Clark to end the
regular season at 13-14, a marked
improvement over last year’s 8-20
slate.
Lemoyne-Owen finished the
regular season at 16-9.
