A salute to pigs
Susan Nelson
County Extension Agent
As I was looking at the March
calender this morning, I realized
that March 1 is National Pig Day.
How appropriate I thought that Na
tional Pig Day should fall during
the Georgia Junior National Live
stock Show. What better celebra
tion of this unique domesticated an
imal than to have 4-H and FFA
members from all over the state
presenting the best of the best to
top judges.
Boys and girls across the state
have worked hard over the past few
months to prepare their hogs,
steers, and sheep for competition at
the annual show. In the past few
weeks I have found a great apprecia¬
tion for those dedicated youth. Our
own 4-H’ers from Peach County
have spent afternoons and weekends
feeding, ing, and washing, training shearing, their hogs groom¬ for
competition.
Preparing for competition re¬
quires dedication and a responsible
attitude. Developing these qualities
and skills is what 4-H is all about.
Youth have many opportunities to
develop qualities of leadership, de¬
pendability, honesty, patience, and
cooperation, and practical skills in
4-H. They also become more cre¬
ative, industrious, and enthusiastic
and learn that sense of humor is a
true asset.
Individuality is a key component
of 4-H. Deborah Mathis, mother of
two club members, was telling me
how different her boys are in com¬
petition. Chad, wants to be the best
in his category while younger
brother, Brad, just wants to show
his pig. Yet, both boys will
quickly tell that having fun and
making new friends is more impor¬
tant than winning.
Showing livestock encourages
youth to set goals for themselves
considering their strengths and abil¬
ities. 4-H members also become
aware of economics through keep¬
ing records of food, medical atten¬
tion , grooming equipment, initial
investment, and the return of sell¬
ing the animal after the show.
I admire the self-confidence and
capability required to handle a hog
among fifty others. Sometimes, it
even lakes a little imagination to
out wit a fast moving 200 pound
animal.
Congratulation to Brad Mathis,

Let's all take a moment to be
