Best wishes to Dr. Webb &
Dr. Willis Webb has been an
optometrist for 46 years in Fort
Valley. Upon his recent retirement,
Eyesight Associates honored him
with a reception at the Evans
Cantrell House.
Though bom in Columbus, Dr.
Webb is considered a “hometown”
boy because of his many years of
practice and his family’s communi¬
ty involvement The son of the Late
Lollie and Willis Webb, Dr. Webb
graduated from Columbus High
School, Auburn University and
Northern Illinois College of
Optometry.Willis is widely known
for his hobby of flying which began
in World War II when he was a B-
24 Bomber Pilot with missions
over enemy territory. He is a Life
Member of the Antique Airplane
Association and collects, restores,
and flies these oldies. Dr. Webb is a
former Scout Master, Past President
of the Kiwanis Club, and a member
of the Board of Governors, Muse¬
um of Aviation at RAFB.
He and his lovely wife, Evelyn,
have been married for 49 years.
Evelyn stays busy doing interior
designing, garden and flower
arranging. She taught a course this
fall in flora design at FVSC. She is
a member of Town and Country
Garden Club, the Middle Georgia
Flower Judges Council. The
Webb’s are members of St.
Andrews Episcopal Church.
The Webb children were home for
this reception presided over by Dr.
Johnny Gayton and the staff at Eye¬
sight Associates In the receiving
line with their parents were Greg
from Dunwoody, Ga; Nancy and
Phyllis from Lexington, Ky.; Laura
from Gainesville, Ga.; and Gina
from San Diego, Calif. There are
three grandchildren. Other family
present were his brother, Tommy
Webb and his wife, Jeanine, also of
Fort Valley.
Hundreds of friends and patients,
including Mrs. Annie V. Murphy,
his first receptionist, came to the
retirement party to pay tribute to
Willis and Evelyn.
All of the guests and the family
wore name tags which clued their
children, who have been away from
the Valley for a long time, as to
who was coming through the
receiving line. It also provided a
great opportunity for us to mix and
mingle with those from out of
town. The family’s name tags fea¬
tured little eyes with eyeglasses.
The original appointment book was
on display.
We wish the Webb’s much happi¬
ness in their retirement. I am pretty
sure they’ll be very busy with fly¬
ing, flowers, and family.
A lot of moving is going on in our
community. Fent Smith, youth
director at Fort Valley Methodist
Church, has purchased the home of
he late “Mac” Pearson on the Mar
ihall ville Highway.

Remember Ernest and Mary Jo
Rumph. Ernest suffered a heart
attack last week. He is a patient at
the Medical Center of Central
Georgia, Macon.
The children of Tommy and
Estelle Pyles honored them on their
50th Wedding Anniversary with a
lovely reception at the Evans
Cantrell House on Novem-
ber 5. Tommy and Estelle are mem¬
bers of the Upper Room Sunday
School Class at the Fort Valley
United Methodist Church. Tommy
is retired from Woolfolk and
Estelle, an artist with the Jail House
Art Association, is retired from
nursing. As long as Tommy was
able to grow peanuts, the Pyles
hosted a Peanut Boil at their coun¬
try home each fall and the guests
looked forward to this event year
after year.
The Pyles are parents of four chil¬
dren, twelve grandchildren and
have seven great-grandchildren.
Their children are Felix and Susan
Pyles of Charlotte, N. C.; Clancy
and Jake Haslam of Carrollton;
June and Mike Hinson who moved
to Fort Valley last year, buying the
Greg Rose house on Anderson
Avenue; and Steve and Patty Pyles
of Zenith.

Mrs. Emmett Brady is a resident
at the New Perry Nursing Home,
Perry, Ga. 31069.The happiest
birthday ever must have been cele¬
brated by Mrs. Lucille Rodgers on
November 2. She and Kay Whitley
left on Wednesday to visit Brantley
Whitley at Hampton-Sidney Col¬
lege near Richmond, Virginia. They
also planned to take in the sights at
Wiliamsburg. A cancer survivor,
Mrs. Rodgers raised nearly $1000
for the Cancer Crusade’s Relay for
Life and walked her turns for the
24 hour relay. Mrs. Rodgers was
secretary for the Board of Educa¬
tion for many years and is a
remarkable Senior Citizen!

Dennis Herbert went to Belgium
on a diamond buying tripa jewel¬
er’s dream. In addition to being
able to pick and choose from the
best diamonds in the world, he got
to tour Paris one day and climbed
the Eiffel Tower.
Dennis doesn’t have to worry
about the store when he’s away for
his wife and daughter have it all
under control. Daughter Janna at
Auburn called about Hurricane
Opal coming and how the mer¬
chants were taping the windows so
Peggy and Lauren taped the win¬
dows at Herbert’s and the next
morning Herbert’s Jewelers win¬
dows looked like something you
would see in Florida—and nothing
got damaged.
In tune with Hurricane Opal, Her¬
bert’s had an Opal Sale 50% off on
opals!

Marlon Maddox, who died recent¬
ly, is muchly missed at the Fort Val¬
ley United Methodist Church. Mar¬
lon always got to Church early so
he could stand outside of Sunday
School classes and shake people’s
hands as they came in. He formed
the “OO-EE’s”, a group who gath¬
ered around and admired the sanc¬
tuary flowers at Church each Sun¬
day. Marlon was also the official
“greeter” at Kiwanis where he
shook many hands on Friday. In
spite of all his civic involvement,
he was an active member of the
Coffee Club at McDonald’s.
Marlon loved flowers and was
known for his beautiful roses which
he shared with people in the work
place. His casket was adorned with
a spray made of camellias from the
gardens of Margaret and Frank
Jamison and Dan and Muriel
Nathan.
