Tuberculosis is not new
Georgia in the 90’s is seeing a
resurgence of an old acquaintance:
tuberculosis.

tion show that M Rr f jap

climbing
toward the

cases usually
reported by
larger urban
areas such as Phillip McDevitt

City, Miami, PC Health Dept,
or Los Ange¬
les. To gain some insight into the
origins of this resurgence, some
background information is helpful.
Tuberculosis is not a new disease.
Evidence shows tuberculosis was a
serious health problem as long ago
as 6,000 years. Egyptian mummies
have been examined and evidence
of tuberculosis infection is appar¬
ent. Although many treatments
were tried, not until the 1950’s
were antibiotic drugs developed
that could cure tuberculosis infec¬
tion and disease. Around the world,
the number of cases began to
decline. In the United States in par¬
ticular, the incidence of tuberculo¬
sis was declining steadily. Then,
about 1984, the statistics began to
show a slow increase in the num¬
bers of persons with the disease.
After much study, the public
health authorities detected that the
resurgence of tuberculosis was
largely due to two factors: the
increase in number of people
infected with HIV, and the increase
in the numbers of people in poor
health due to substance abuse. In
addition, there were new strains of
tuberculosis that were resistant to
the primary antibiotics normally
used to treat the disease.
So, what does this situation mean
to you in Middle Georgia? It means
that you are more likely to be
exposed to tuberculosis that you
might have been ten years ago, and
that the strain of tuberculosis you
are exposed to might be drug resis¬
tant. It means you need to be aware
of the risk factors for infection ant
the treatment options available.
You are at increased risk of
becoming infected with tuberculo¬
sis if any or all of the following
apply: You have HIV/AIDS; use or
have used injectable drugs; live or
work in correctional institutions;
live or work in nursing homes or
mental institutions; work in health
care facilities; have had close con¬
tact with someone who has or may
have tuberculosis; have any signs
of tuberculosis; have immigrated
from a country where tuberculosis
is prevalent.
If any of these factors apply to
you, your local health department
can provide a screening skin test to
detect if you have been exposed
and are currently infected. It is sim¬
ple and safe, and can let you know
if you need further testing for

tuberculosis treatment. If further
tests are needed, they usually con¬
sist of a screening x-ray. After the
skin test and the x-ray have been
evaluated, medical treatment may
then be started with a variety of
antibiotics.
Health awareness is one of the
best tools in preventing tuberculo¬
sis. Be aware of the outward signs
and symptoms of tuberculosis: a
cough that lasts more than two
weeks, fevers, weight loss, night
sweats, loss of appetite, prolonged
fatigue, and spitting up blood. If
you have close contact with some¬
one who has these symptoms, you
should contact your physician or
the public health department in
your county and ask about a screen¬
ing skin test If you have these
symptoms, contact your physician
or the public health department
right away. Tuberculosis is a seri¬
ous disease, but it can be complete¬
ly cured if it is detected and treated
promptly. Be aware and be healthy!
