Thanksgiving 39ers enjoy
banquet, friends
Everyone who attended the 39’er
Thanksgiving banquet at Fort Val¬
ley First Baptist Church on Nov. 16
was fdled with thankfulness at the
sight that greeted them; that is,
everyone except the turkey.
The Fellowship Hall has never
looked lovelier, thanks to Martha
Culpepper, Betty Murphy, Rena
Bowman, and Lena Belle Duke,
who had captured the spirit of the
season in all the decor. Each table
had a centerpiece featuring either a
turkey or a butternut squash sur¬
rounded by fruit, miniature
chrysanthemums, fall leaves, and
decorative squash. Similar larger
arrangements graced the occasional
tables and piano. At each place was
a turkey nut cup filled with season¬
al candies and peanuts and a color¬
ful turkey napkin.
Elaine Clark, director, welcomed
everyone to what she called the
*4 stuffing" season, and after the
delicious meal, catered by Dot
Andrew,the group fully understood
how appropriate Mullis, that term chaplain, was.
Elaine asked King
to say the blessing.
Peggy Sutton received a Butter
ball turkey as a doc prize. Melaine
Hawkins accompanied the well
known trio, Ouida Luckie, Dot
Hatchett, and Debra Byrd, in sever¬
al inspiring songs. The speaker for
the evening was Dr. Phil Pilgrim,
pastor of the church, who told sev¬
eral humorous things that had hap¬
pened to him because of his
4t Thanksgiving name”. The focus
o£ his talk was missions. He point¬
ed out that the origin of missions is
the heart of God;the object of mis¬
sions is to win the world for God;
and the orientation of missions is
from above, from within, and from
without. He reminded the group
that Alexander the Great changed
the language of the world; Caesar
changed the face of the world; and
Christ changed the heart of the
world. Annette Duke presented him
with the Mayme Lee Love Gift
Elaine announced that the Christ¬
mas banquet will be on December
21. Those who plan to attend
should start making reservations
and paying on December 4. The
Joint-Heirs of Columbus will pro¬
vide the program. King Mullis gave
the benediction before the group
joined hands and sang”Blest Be the
Tie”.
Those who attended were Annis
and Ralph Champion, Martha
Mathews, Helen Giles, LaVerne

Security, safety
and you...
Whai should you do if you come
home and suspect that someone has
broken into your house? Perhaps
your security alarm is ringing, or a
door that you were sure you had
locked prior to leaving is open.
Maybe you notice what appear to
be prying marks around the frame
of a window or door.
Whatever the case, this is no time
to be a hero. Go immediately to a
neighbor’s home or a nearby public
telephone and call the police at
once. Be prepared to describe what
aroused your suspicion, as well as
any unusual vehicles you night
have seen parked near your house.
Then wait for the police. Do not
go in or near your house, even if it
takes a little while for the police to
arrive and you begin to suspect that
nothing is wrong. Don’t worry
about inconveniencing the police,
either. Theyll appreciate your help
in preventing a potentially danger¬
ous confrontation between yourself
and the person(s) who may have
entered your house.
