I Corner the Market on Your Health
World AIDs Day Dec. 1
By Sherri Sims, StafT Nurse
Peach Co. Health Dept
What do we know about AID
SAIDS or Acquired Immune Defi¬
ciency Syndrome is caused by the
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
(HIV) commonly called the AIDS
virus.
If the virus gets into the blood¬
stream, it attacks the body’s
immune system and destroys it.
This makes the body unable to fight
infection, resulting in serious infec¬
tions or cancers.
HOW DOES A PERSON GET
INFECTED WITH THE AIDS
VIRUS? There are two main ways
a person can get infected - By hav¬
ing sex with someone who is
infected (most often IV drug users
and homosexual or bisexual men)
and by sharing IV drug needles and
syringes with someone who is
infected.
There are other ways of becoming
infected - By receiving blood or
blood products infected with the
virus, (although all donated blood
has been tested since March 1985/
there is still a very small chance of
infection from blood or blood prod¬
ucts - By receiving sperm through
artificial insemination from an
infected donor. - By receiving
transplanted organs from an infect¬
ed person.
WHO GETS AIDS?
Anyone who has sexual or blood
to-blood contact with an infected
person can become infected with
the AIDS virus. The largest per¬
centage of AIDS cases has been in
homosexual or bisexual men and
IV drug users. Additional cases
have occurred in heterosexuals who
have had sex with infected partners.
IS THERE A TEST FOR AIDS?
No, but there is a blood test to
show if you have antibodies to the
AIDS virus.
Antibodies are substances found
in your blood when your body is
trying to fight infection. If you
have a positive test, it does not
mean that you have or will get
AIDS. It DOES mean that you have
the virus and can spread it. If you
have a positive test result, see your
doctor for more information and a
checkup.
If you have a negative test result,
it means you are probably not
infected. BUT, if you are practicing
risky behaviors such as having sex
without a condom or sharing IV
drug needles and syringes with an
infected person, you could become
infected anytime and have a posi¬
tive test result.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PRE¬
VENT GETTING OR SPREAD¬
ING THE AIDS VIRUS?
The surest way to prevent sexual
transmission of the AIDS virus is to
have no sexual contact at all. If you
are sexually active, avoid having
sex with multiple partners (more

than one person) or with persons
who have had multiple partners.
The more partners you have, the
greater are your chances of infec¬
tion.
Avoid sex with persons with
AIDS, persons not practicing “pro¬
tective sex” (see below), persons
sharing IV drug needles and
syringes, or persons who have had
a positive HIV antibody test. Also
avoid contact with a person’s body
fluids. Body fluids include blood,
semen, vaginal secretions, urine,
feces, and saliva. The AIDS virus is
spread through blood, semen, and
vaginal secretions. Although the
virus has been found in small
amount in other body fluids, there
is no evidence that the virus is
spread through them.
Unless you are sure that your part¬
ner is not infected, protect yourself.
Take the following precautions:
•Use latex condoms (rubbers)
from stait to finish along with a
birth control foam or jelly.
* Avoid sexual practices that may
injure body tissues (for example,
anal intercourse)
* Avoid oral-genital contact.
'"Talk openly about sex. Ask ques¬
tions about past sexual activities
and IV drug use. Be honest about
your own past.
•Don’t use IV drugs. If you do,
don’t share needles or syringes.
•Don’t donate blood, plasma,
sperm, body organs, or other body
tissues if you are at increased risk
of infection.
WHERE CAN I GET TESTED
FOR THE AIDS VIRUS?
Call your local Health Depart¬
ment or your physician and request
an appointment to be confidentially
tested for the AIDS virus.
