Getting a cow to perform in a

work for the students The only
way to do it is by earning the
cow’s trust and confidence.
This takes many hours working
closely with the heifers
Peach County competed in the
9th through 12th grade classes
There were several heats mak¬
ing up each class Some of the
students made the cut up to the
final heat for their class. In all,
there were 10 - 14 finalists in
each class Heather Walton
placed third for the 12th grade
class in Showmanship compete
tion Out of the 50 ribbons
handed out, Peach County stu¬
dents picked up 8. 10% of all of
the ribbons went to the Peach
County team
The weight class judging was
on Sunday The cows were all
weighed and separated into 16
classes by weight Eight
es make up a division
There is a lightweight division
for the 200 - 340 pound cows
The heavyweight division is for
cows between 345 620 pounds
The judge is looking to how
well the cow looks for her
weight This competition is
more on the looks of the heifer
and not how the student shows
her. This reflects how well the
cow has been cared for: fed,
exercised, and groomed.
Peach County was fortunate
to have a tremendous amount
of support from Mr Ken Strong
and Mr John Lilian) with Con
Agra Their support was most
critical in producing cows that
looked good They helped the
students make sure the daily
feed was just what the cow
needed Their help was obvious
in the weight class judging.
Peach County did exceptional
in the weight class The only
cow that did not win a ribbon
was one that was too light for
the weight class Twenty-one
heifers, twenty ribbons ranking
from 11th to 1st Daniel Joyner
and Angela Ameraon won first
and second in the lightweight
division. They moved up to
compete in the final competi¬
tion with the winners of the
heavyweight division Judge
Gayle Carson said that he
so impressed with Joyner’s
heifer that he would have won
the division even if the cow just
dragged Daniel around the
ring Rare for a judge to be so
taken with the appearance of a
cow
Tt) Joyner's dismay, then* was
one heifer there that was actu¬
ally better Peach County end¬
ed up with the Reaerve Grand
Champion for the show Great
results for a program that is
only three years old'
That was not all All of the
teams at the show compete for
the Herdmanship Award. This
award is for the team that
keeps it workplace neat and
tidy, presents an attractive
visual focal point, and shows
good sportsmanship in and out
of the ring Peach County
placed second for this impor
unit award.
At the end of the weekend, it
was apparent that Peach Coun
ty has one of the best Agricui
ture Programs in the state
These young people have
worked hard for months They
took baby calves and cared for
them and raised them up to be
beautiful dairy' heifers They
learned a lot about life Some
of them saw a glimpse of what
being a parent is like
One of the school board mem
hers mentioned his support for
the program Then he threw in
the inevitable “but,* he did not
see many dairy' farmers around
here Interesting. Peach Coun
ty citizens give a great deal of
support to the sports teams;
rightfully so But. there are not
too many professional athletes
in Middle Georgia either Our
children are called to march to
mahy different drummers. 38 <
do well when we support ffiem

This year. Peach County’s
Dairy Show Team, led by Mr
Mark Swords, made a positive
impression for the program
among the other teams across
the state More importantly, the
kids made great strides toward
becoming adults

Don Cicatello discusses highlights of the “Bridge-the
Gap’ Citizen’s Plan with Commissioner Ernest Jump
and Chairman Frank Hollis.

By Meg Thomas
Citizen’s plan stalled
When Commissioner Thelma
Blasingame expressed her
desire to find ways to improve
communications and strength
on relations between the coun
ty government and it* citizens
in December 1998, Don
Cicatello, a concerned citizen
residing in the Lower Hartley
Bridge area of the 5th District,
volunteered to assist commis
sioner* to bridge this vital gap
to the community
Mr Cicatello presented an
assessment of the problem
with recommendations to the
commissioners at the Dec 7th
meeting After some discus
sion, the commissioners unam
mously agreed the plan was a
good one, although no vote was
taken
However, at the Dec. 21st
meeting, Greg Dent initiated a
motion to delete Cicatello’* pre
sentation from the previous
meeting's minutes Freddie
Tidwell and Forrest Rhodes
agreed With Commissioner
Dent and the motion passed
Commissioners Hollis and
Blasingame abstained
Mr Cicatello asked Chairman
(at the time) Tidwell, “How can
you pat me on the head with
one hand and trash my good
work with the other? 1 will
continue to submit the plan
until it is approved Chairman
Tidwell advised Mr. Cicatello
that if he made two minor
changes, the plan could be
resubmitted at the next meet
ing
At the Feb 15th Commission
ers’ meeting., Chairman Hollis
brought up Mr Cicatello’*
citizen’s plan (under old busi
ness) recommending that it be

Tidwell and Dent began ques

plan
Chairman Hollis invited Mr
Cicatello to respond to Com

queries, whereupon Cicatello
returned to the table with
charts and presented his
revised plan He expressed sur
prise that Commissioners Tid:
well and Dent would seek to
stall a plan which was basical
ly approved back in December,
except for two minor changes
which he had subsequently
incorporated into the plan
Commissioner Jump said
"It’s not every day that citizens
come forward to volunteer
their time to help us This is a
good plan we need to approve
it and move ahead!*
When the discussion became
heated. Chairman Hollis
reminded commissioners "We
knew when we wen* elected by
the citizens, we should expect
to be criticized for some of our
actions*, and concluded “Those
of us that can not stand the
grease, should get out of the
kitchen' After more discussion
with little progress, Chairman
Hollis firmly said "We are
going to table this and discuss
it at the next meeting”;
As the meeting concluded,
Mr Cicatello said “1 don’t
understand why Commission
ers Tidwell and Dent are
against the plan. This
‘bridge-the-gap’ initiative is
all about accountability of our
county government to its rest
