Saturday morning skies in
Fort Valley threatened a
of Friday’s downpour but
7:30 a.m. the clouds parted
heralding the opening of the
sixth annual LINKS Walk-A
Thon in Fort Valley.
The event, sponsored by the
local chapter of LINKS, Inc.
and the Peach/Houston Chap¬
ter of Jack and Jill of America,
Inc., is held annually as a
means of promoting “moderate
physical activity among African
Americans, encouraging
African Americans to embrace
health and wellness as a
lifestyle, encouraging family
togetherness, and raising funds
to provide services to the home¬
less, the hungry and other
charities.”
LINKS, Inc., is an interna¬
tional volunteer service organi¬
zation of 11,000 African-Ameri¬
can women who are concerned
and committed to enhance the
quality of life in the larger com¬
munity.

FFA students build bridges to break
By Holly Coleman - FFA Reporter
In Mr. Swords’ Basic Agri
culture I class (second period)
the students have been learn¬
ing how to build agricultural
structures. Mr. Swords taught
them about the measurements
and mechanics of building a
bridge.
Each student had to design
and construct a bridge of their
own. The materials used to
make the bridges were pine
and wood glue. Students were
limited to the amount of wood
they could use with a time
period of one week to complete
their bridges.
When everyone had com¬
pleted them it was time to
“break the bridges”. In order to
break the bridges the class
applied weight to the center of
them until they broke. After
the bridge broke, the class col¬
lected *he weights. Once all
weights were collected, they
were then added together to
determine the total weight the
bridge had held. The class used
many objects such as steel
blanks and cement blocks for
