It’s National AIDS
awareness month
October is National AIDS
Awareness Month. The objec
tive of this awareness cam
paign is to educate the general
public about the dangers of
HIV-AIDS, teach persons to
avoid HIV infection by modify
ing their high risk behaviors
and encourage free, confiden
tial HIV testing with the pur
pose of identifying HIV infect
ed pe-sons.
Peach Regional Medical
Center has joined this aware
ness campaign by providing
the following information on
HIV-AIDS.
HIV is a human immunode
ficiency virus which causes
acquired immune deficiency
syndrome (AIDS). HIV dam
ages the immune system, the
part of the body that fights
infection. Eventually, the
immune system becomes so
weak that diseases and infec
tions begin to attack the body.
As these conditions worsen, a
person is diagnosed with AIDS.
As of December 2001, the
Hooks honored by GMA
Senator George Hooks (D
Americus) received a 2002
"Champion of Georgia's Cities
Award" from the Georgia
Municipal Association (GMA).
The award, given annually to
state legislators who actively
support major GMA initiatives
(jOti goals, was given to Senator
H*oks for his very active sup
port for funding of the Georgia
Cities Foundation.
Support for the Foundation
from the state is matched dol
lar for dollar from the Woodruff
Foundation and the funds are
used to support a job interest
loan program designed to revi
talize downtown business dis
tricts.
"Senator Hooks has played
an important rate in many of
GMA’s major legislative suc
cesses in recent years," said
GMA Executive Director Jim
Higdon. "He is certainly a
friend and supporter of cities,
but he is also a great ambas
sador for Georgia. He under
